Clarets youngsters see off Suarez
LUIS Suarez, the £50m-rated striker regarded as one of the world’s best players, suffered defeat at the hands of Burnley’s development team yesterday.
Suarez completed 90 minutes for a Liverpool development side as he prepares to return to first-team duties on Wednesday, after a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic.
But a youthful Clarets line-up claimed a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Cameron Howieson and Steven Hewitt.
Burnley’s development squad coach Simon Weatherstone said: “It was a great performance from the lads.
“In possession we were very bright and effective. Out of possession we were also very organised and disciplined against very good opposition, including the obvious threat posed by Suarez.
“We were delighted with the result and performance and I am sure the boys will have picked up so much from playing a quality team.”
Meanwhile, Burnley will host Wigan Athletic in the qualifying round of the inaugural Under-21 Premier League Cup.
The Clarets will take on the Latics at Turf Moor on Tuesday, October, 8 with a 7pm kick off.
Blackburn Rovers enter the competition in two rounds time.
