Nelson 8 Oldham Boro 4
7:29am Monday 16th September 2013 in Football
NELSON came out on top in an astonishing 12-goal thriller at Victoria Park after beating Oldham Boro 8-4.
And all that after the Admirals fought back from 4-2 down in a match that will live long in the memory.
Defender Danny Finch and Ritchie Allen were left to fight over the match ball after they both scored hat-tricks for the free-scoring Admirals who hit six past Rochdale Town in midweek – where Peter Wright also netted a treble.
Finch got the ball rolling with a five minute opener before Oldham hit back with an equaliser just four minutes later through Jerome Bryson.
Allen netted his first two minutes later to restore Nelson’s advantage but Boro – who have won just twice this season – appeared to be on their way to a shock victory when they scored three times in 13 minutes.
Nathan Adams scored the first of his brace to make it 2-2 in the 21st minute.
Scott Highton fired the visitors in to the lead in the 29th minute, a lead extended just two minutes later by Adams.
But the first half scoring wasn’t over and a breathless opening 45 minutes concluded with Finch netting his second just before the break.
But there was to be no relenting and Nelson were on level terms just two minutes after the restart when Allen bagged his second.
Nelson went in to the lead for a third time when Josh Barrick got in on the scoring act – notching his fourth of the campaign – and this time they were not to let it slip again.
Allen completed his hat-trick in the 57th minute and Robert Grimes, who was also on target in that 6-1 win over Rochdale Town, made it 7-4 on the hour mark.
It was left to Finch, who had got the ball rolling with the opening goal, to complete the scoring and his hat-trick with an eighth in the 72nd minute.
