Burnley consider director of football

BURNLEY could look to appoint a director of football if Eddie Howe’s successor is new to senior management.

The Clarets are set to pick their next boss from a shortlist of “three or four” ahead of Saturday’s trip to Cardiff City.

And a number of those linked with the vacant post have little or no experience of managing in the Football League.

Ex-Clarets Warren Joyce, the manager of Manchester United’s reserves, and Graham Alexander, who was appointed head of youth at Preston after calling time on his playing career, are believed to be of interest to the Burnley board, as is former defender Steve Davis.

The 47-year-old won promotion with Crewe last season but only took charge of the team after Dario Gradi stepped down the previous November.

Portsmouth’s Michael Appleton has also been linked with the Turf Moor job and, similarly, only made the step up to management in the same month, after working his way up to a senior role at West Brom.

Experienced manager Mick McCarthy was an early favourite to become Burnley’s fifth manager in five years after informal talks, but the trail has since gone cold on the former Wolves boss.

However, Burnley are believed to have a strong interest in Keith Hill.

John Banaszkiewicz, left, said he and fellow chairman Mike Garlick had met at least 15 candidates who had expressed an interest in the job, with those on the shortlist demonstrating similar traits.

“They are quite similar,” he said.

“I’ve been really impressed with the desire to come and manage Burnley because they see the prospects.

“Some of them are at good clubs at the moment but they see the potential and Burnley were in the Premier League three years ago and they think they can repeat that.

“They see us as being ambitious and also as being a stable club.

“If you look at Blackburn and even Bolton with their financial affairs, that’s some reason why some people don’t apply there.

“They feel Burnley’s a bit more stable and a proper club.”

After establishing the shortlist, Banaszkiewicz explained second interviews would take place this week, with fellow board members Brendan Flood, Barry Kilby and Clive Holt brought into the discussions.

“It’s quite difficult right now to pick the best one because there are three or four really capable and hungry candidates for the job,” he said.

“I hope we will have an answer probably by next weekend in terms of who that candidate is.

“But at this stage we’re not sure.

“My co-chairman Mike (Garlick) and I don’t quite think ‘yes, that’s the guy’ yet, so I think a second time round would be good, and we’ll bring in Barry, Brendan and Clive for the DNA to try to work out which one of those three or four is best.

“I think we’ll have a decision by the end of next week.”

In the meantime, Terry Pashley is happy to remain in temporary charge after recording a 1-0 win over Blackpool in his first game.

“You’d find it hard not to enjoy it,” he smiled. “You can see where it’s stressful – a different kind of stress to what I’ve been used to – but there’s got to be some enjoyment there.

“I haven’t tasted the other side of it yet – hopefully not for a long time. It was really, really enjoyable; a very good day. One of the best days I’ve had for a long time.”

But the 55-year-old stopped short of throwing his hat into the ring in Burnley’s search for a new boss.

“I can honestly say I’ve not even thought about it. I’ve had too much to think about sorting training out. That’s what I’ve been asked to do,” he said.

“I’ve no control over anything else, I just want to control what I can control and that’s the training and getting on with the boys, and they’ve been great.”

He added: “All week I’ve felt quite calm and all day, but then my mind was going into overdrive and I can appreciate now what managers go through on a real daily basis.

“That’s very new.”

The players, meanwhile, have praised Pashley for the positive impact he has made in a difficult week.

“I haven’t had the privilege of having the chance to work with Pash too much but he’s been really good, just what the doctor ordered, and the lads have responded in the right way to what has been a tough week previously,” said goalkeeper Lee Grant.

“We were all disappointed to see the manager leave but the lads have really responded well and we’re all pleased with how Pash has gone about everything.”

Tell me Mr Bananasquick, which team broke the Championship transfer record this summer?

Thought so, just another jealous, six fingered, tatty pie eating hill dweller.

I thought I saw this clowns name on a loaf of bread in the supermarket this morning, then I realised it actually said 'Thick Cut'.

So now it looks like we are going to go for a cheap option again.

If BFC go for Hill then there will be some compensation to be paid but who will compensate the fans for lack of confidence for the Board to at least take some form of gamble. Also, wil they consider paying fans compensation for the snide remarks etc. we can expect from the Chicken Pluckers about having a Blackburn reject as manager.

QUESTION To our joint Chairmen; whilst it is commendable to err on caution in respect of finance, there has to be at some point of gamble.

Surely gentlemen you did not make your fortunes by not taking any risks whatsoever, so where has your entrepreunarial expertise/adventure gone?

Are you both Directors because you like your name tags, or are you prepared to at least put some of your own money in trying to take the club forward?

Or is there a hidden agenda with the appointment of Mr. Hoos as Chief Executive? It is well known that his speciality is preparing football clubs for take - overs.

Yes, glory days. Had many of them at turd moor in living memory? Didn't think so. Those days are gone and we now find ourselves in the Championship now breaking the all time transfer record for a player at this level. Looks like we're at it again, buying things you peasants can't only dream about. So look at us now, still above you, still got bigger attendances and your still living in our shadow.

burnley are a mediocre and spiteful little club forever being dumped by their managers. Maybe Bananaquick should think before he opens his gob and tries to have a dig at his/your far superior neighbours.

burnley fc - In Blackburns shadow since they were formed, in the year another Blackburn team won yet another FA Cup.

Posting as a Burnley Fan on the Burnley pages...... Hill's track record so far is excellent and would be good to see Grezza given his chance. Can't see how a director of football would help though, look at how many times it has failed at other clubs. A manager knows what he wants and how he wants the game played - whoever is appointed let him get on with it and whilst at it give him the funds you would have paid the so called director.

Maybe that's why theres never many posts/comments on the 'burnley pages'. Is it simply due to a lack of fans, or an inability of said fans to use a keyboard?

Oh okay.

So that's why you get less fans in the ground then, they're all on clampetsmad are they?

I can't help it if I've got a big head, it comes from the superiority complex I've developed by being a Rovers fan when our most bitter 'rivals' have been such a pitiful adversary for such a long time.

I note one of your brethren is across the front pages today for being a sexual abuser. Nothing changes there then.

Reasonable discussion on bumley fc? You're having a laugh, surely?

Anyway, must dash, I've more banjo playing, six fingered, inbred hillbillies to wind up. Just like YOU!!! hehe
