Wilpshire Tyke away a Turkey trip
8:16am Friday 19th October 2012 in Sport
WILPSHIRE Golf Club triumphed on Yorkshire soil to clinch a trip to Turkey for The Lombard Challenge.
The Blackburn club’s duo of captain John Campbell and PGA professional Simon Townend surprised even themselves by winning the PGA Pro-Captain tournament held at Huddersfield Golf Club.
But in fact, the duo are unbeaten all year as a pair in club events.
Campbell and Townend only just made it though after tying for the lead and winning on countback from Keighley Golf Club’s Andrew Rhodes and Paul Davies who recorded a hole-in-one on their way to a seven-under-par round of 64.
But Wilpshire matched them on the back nine and the result was decided over the final six holes.
Now Campbell and Townend will play in the £25,000 grand final over the PGA Sultan course at Antalya Golf Club in Turkey from November 30 to December 1.
Campbell, who plays off a handicap of 13, admitted: “I think being a Lancashire club playing in Yorkshire must have inspired us.
“We’ve been playing a lot in club events and haven’t been beaten all season.
“But we didn’t think we were going to win here in such a big field. We finished well and I thought we’d be among the prizes, but I was shocked to find out that we’d won it.”
Townend has never come close to the final before but had praise for his captain.
The Wilpshire PGA professional said: “John doesn’t hit it long, but he chips and putts to good effect. He got three net birdies in a row.
“This is a first for me, I play in this event every year but haven’t come close to winning it before.”
