Black believes change needed to improve Rovers displays
7:47am Friday 19th October 2012 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
ERIC Black insists Blackburn Rovers have not yet hit the standards needed to achieve an instant Premier League return, making their early season results “unsustainable”.
Rovers’ caretaker boss has attempted to radically alter things at Ewood Park since Steve Kean’s departure and, despite just two points from his three games at the helm, is adamant ‘on field change’ was needed.
Black will again be in temporary charge for tomorrow’s Championship trip to Derby County, as Rovers’ attempts to land Tim Sherwood as their new boss continue to falter, and is desperate to help the team improve their performances.
He admits his efforts to change Rovers’ style of play, including the use of a new 3-5-2 formation, have not had the desired effect but believed something had to give.
He said: “I think we need to be more offensive in what we do and more direct in what we do. I don’t mean I want the ball to be kicked up the pitch, that is not what I am saying.
“This is a traditional football club where supporters want to see energy, competitiveness, shots on target, blocks, aggressiveness.
“It needs to be that type of performance. Whether I can transform that in the time I have here I don’t know, that is my challenge.
“I believe the club needs an identity because of the type of people that are here.
“It is a working class town and they want to see energy and aggressiveness.
“Blackburn Rovers have been like that for as long as I can remember. We need to turn that into promotion.”
Rovers were sitting third in the table when Kean quit the club in September, with just one league defeat, but Black believes results had been deceptive.
He insists Rovers can’t claim to be “a Premier League” team and believes “10 per cent extra” might need to be added in the January transfer window to make promotion dreams realistic.
“I have been in the league a long time and I am not deluded by results,” he said. “You can’t be deluded as a coach, you have to be performance based.
“Results keep you in the job but if you are doing that on a slightly shaky basis you have to be trying to resolve that basis. I would have to agree we have not performed exceptionally well. The first few results were fantastic but I don’t think it was sustainable.
“We are a Championship team. I don’t care if we have 22 Premier League players, we are a Championship team and it is a different league. I know the differences and I know what is required in the make up and I am not convinced at the moment we are there.
“Something has to change. That is only my opinion. Someone might come in tomorrow and say we can play in a certain way and we will go up and that is their decision. If they get up, they will be proved right.
“I think there is 90 per cent the right ingredients to achieve promotion. I don’t think there is 100 percent. You have to try and get to that 100 per cent and it might take until January to supplement that.
“I am a great believer that you need a variation of front players. I don’t think we have got enough front players for this type of division, a Leon Best type.
“We have got a lot of players who have played off the front but we need players used to playing two up. That has not been possible.”

can lead to poor assumptions being formed.
Black may not be getting points but he is obviously attempting to change the team around but that in itself has alienated the fans because they are impatient and crave a return to the Premiership.

It was clear that the team has played poorly all season despite fluky early results.
Very refreshing after all Kean's drivel.
Unfortunately for Black, just like 'get real' Dunn, after his support of Kean he's not exactly got a store of goodwill from which to buy the time needed to turn things round.
Once again it shows all those pundits/media types who was right about Kean.
Kean for Burnley.

I would also question EB,s knowledge of the traditions of the club he is managing. The best team in the years since 95 was the Souness team which played football pure and simple as did the great team of the early 60,s. Indeed until Big Sam arrived I had never associated Rovers with anything but good football.
Good luck to EB and to Rovers but I dont see the current set-up as being the answer to our prayers, experience/experienc

When he catches up he will realise he needs to fix the midfield, not try to distract everybody by talking about Best, who's done nothing for Rovers yet. We have srtikers who can find the net, in Rhodes, Colin KR, Gomes, but the crap midfield can't supply them or protect our fragile defence, because they are not fit, organised or motivated.

In theory that's not a bad team, although I'd have swapped Orr for Bruno Ribeiro and Kazim-Richards for Rochina. Personally, I don't believe 3-5-2 is a great formation as you can end up playing 5-3-2 if you're put on the back foot for most of the game, as was the case against Wolves.
If we're going to play two up front then it needs to be 4-4-2, or 4-4-1-1 as long as the second striker isn't sat too far of the front man's shoulder. I actually think we have the right personnel to play 4-3-3. It's a great attacking formation but, more importantly, can revert to 4-5-1 if you're on the back foot. This is crucial as you still have a solid backline without leaving your midfield stretched and exposed to repeated attacks.I think you're being slightly unfair here. A 3-5-2 formation incorporates wing-backs, full-backs who can also attack up the wings. Our last two starting XIs have been identical with the exception of Kazim-Richards replacing Gomes against Wolves.

As I've also pointed out in a previous post, some of the players seem to think that their place in the team isn't under threat. Bearing that in mind I'd like to see some of them dropped, if only to give them a kick up the backside. With that in mind my starting XI, in a 4-3-3, against Derby would be:

You need to incorporate more naturally attacking players into your team, players who actually have the ability to retain possession, spot a pass and take shots at goal. The fact that Rochina cannot get a start in this league is absolutely unbelievable, the man tears up trees everytime he is brought on. Its a disgrace he cannot get a game, but ordinary Olssons and Lowe who are average defenders asked to play further forward get on the team sheet every week.
-
Be a bit braver and put some attacking players in the team. I think the team for the Wolves game only has Rhodes, Formica, Kazim and Murphy who are recognised midfielders or forward thinking players. And Murphy is so old now he doesnt even get forward!

Black completely lacks any understanding of the word "balance" in the team and any understanding that you cannot just load your team with defenders and expect them to be solid. Unless you have attacking players at the other end who can do some damage.

Why wasn't Black saying all this whilst toss pot was here? Had he not got the strength of character to say these things to him? What sort of a man can put up with so many wrong things without opening his mouth?. If he did and the clown ignored him, why didn't he resign? Not much of a man if you ask me, and certainly not one to consider for the top post.
Maybe the appointment of Hendry was Kean trying to get rid of Black, contructive dismissal is the term often used.

"Rovers’ caretaker boss has attempted to radically alter things" - you mean tried to protect the awful defence by playing 5 defensive midfielders?
"This is a traditional football club where supporters want to see energy, competitiveness, shots on target, blocks, aggressiveness." - We do but we also want to see football. There was precious little against Wolves.
There's no confidence in the side and only a new manager will bring that. Black is just a Kean leftover now trying to make out he has his own ideas. He's laying a foundation of words, just like Kean did, to try and help Shebby and co justify his selection as manager when in a month or two they find nobody else wants the job.

Kean, Black, media tossers: you have obviously never noticed we know more about football than you ever knew. FOOTBALL! You know - that simple game where you control the ball, pass it to team mates, try to outwit the opposition with ball skills and intelligence, create chances by good wingplay and clever tactics, and shoot and head at that net thing whenever there's an opportunity. Yes, we need energy, enthusiasm and a will to win. But aggressiveness? That means fouls, dirty play, no respect for opposing players, no care about breaking legs and such like.
It's assertiveness we want. Asserting ourselves on the game with skill, strength, fair play, hard tackling, muscle, and no-nonsense football. Or perhaps you haven't noticed that? Perhaps you're too caught up with the ducking and diving, the nasty fouls, the laziness and cheating of the overpaid primadonnas? Top players like Shearer, Mike England, Ronnie Clayton, Bryan Douglas and other proper Rovers legends gave 100% and you will find they hardly ever committed fouls. They were very assertive but never aggressive. They respected their opponents and tried to match them toe to toe and get that edge over them by hard work and practice.
Blackburn Rovers fans have seen the finest footballers play at Ewood and we can see as clear as day when players are not good enough. No amount of bull*hit can cover up the fact that present day Rovers players need a helluva lot of work and training to get anywhere near the quality that discerning Rovers fans demand and expect.

However, you're correct Mcdingle, If we win tomorrow (and we will 0-2 i think) that will give them the excuse they are waiting for. It's been coming a mile off. Black MUST know we don't want him, so will require have big b0llock5 or skin as thick as the dearly departed Steve 'what plane' Kean........

Most British chaps that were brought up in the football playing world/environment ,realise Shebby Singh has very very limited knowledge of the game,a man that is naive but ambitious, and been trusted to look after a football club ,that was part of the beginning of the world wide phenomona of what was called at the time "'association football".
If Shebby Singh had lived in England in his prime footballing years he would probably have been a reserve player for someone like Carshalton maybe a little better ,but he was/is the token local for Asian football channel, not to be taken serious..
Black- Coach ,good coach and probably a very good right hand man for a the right manager.
Hendry, was a good player, sadly a man with low morals and a dishonest person , low concentration level ,would be better suited getting a job job working for the local bookies.

I believe the club needs an identity because of the type of people that are here.
John Williams and Co must be seething having devoted so much of his life to building one of the most identifiable clubs in the country as for big Jack I dread to think.
Anyone who truly knew the club would not even dare to suggest such a crass statement .
Black get your bags packed for an imminent departure. Your pal Hendry has obviously not passed on the core values of our club either. No issues there though cos his bags are packed already.

The bad news is that I’ve gone through anyone who has worked at Spuds over the last 70 years who is still alive but can’t find anyone who wants to be our manager. The good news is that I’ve a new plan and I’ve got a copy of Rothmans and am in the process of putting anyone mentioned there in alphabetical order and subsequently have just been on the phone to Mr Aardvark.
Agnew: I know Cecil Aarvark chief. He used to sell programs at Rammy United didn’t he?
Singe: That’s him. A fine man with an extensive footballing knowledge.
Shaw: Did he accept the job SS?
Singe: Unfortunately he says on Saturday afternoons he has to wash his hair so won’t be able to join us.
Agnew: But chief Cecil was bald as a coote when I knew him.

Singe: Ah yes Pudsey. He’s got all the right qualifications we’re looking for. He’s a kitman and he changed his name to a bear by deed poll. What did he say?
Shaw: He says that on Saturdays he really wants to meet up with his friend Yogi for coffee. He is bi-polar you know
Singe: Right that’s it there’s only I thing left. It’s a good job I took my track suit to the tailors the other day to have my SS initials made bigger. As soon as I get it back from the dry cleaners I’ll be down at Brockall.
Agnew: But chief you don’t have any experience. Didn’t you think Ryan Giggs should be playing in central defence with Rio Ferdinand at Melchester United?
Singe: He should I also think that SAF should play Gerrard at left back. Remember Steve Kean didn’t have any experience and I was MOTM against Shewsbury Town you know.

Now then sunshine, the fact that you seem a little obsessed with glory hunters and excuses for not supporting Rovers, suggests to me you're either another bitter and twisted dingle, clinging on to every last reason to prove Burnleys worth as a football club or just an angry Rovers fan who likes to play devils advocate and stir a bit of 'in house' friction.
Either way I don't particularly like your posting and suggest you change your tone on here sunshine, otherwise I'll come round and smash one up your birds sheriffs badge, even though I'm 102 ;)

The appointment of the right person for the job will take time. In the Business world it is a minimum of three months for a high profile big appointment, even football is catching up!! We need the best person and it will take time. Give the owners and Shebby credit, they are interviewing the best people and the one we can't get to Sherwood means he is well thought of and would be decent. Too many people on here have said we never have a plan B, this is what the guys are looking at including a plan C and D. For once give them credit.
I love my club and always will, this is one of the most important decisions the club has ever made, and it looks like it is being taken very seriously.
See you at Derby

In fighting, racial tension, no common goal, lack of understanding, stupid comments, character judgement without facts, and stubborn opinions that will never change. Serbian FA? No quite simply some so called Rovers fans commenting on here.
Move on, have some faith in people and see what happens.
Let's get behind the team!!

We have been waiting ever since Big Sam was sacked for a good manager. People say 'new manager' quite a lot, and It's almost as if the Venkys and Shebby are looking for a brand new manager. I certainly don't want a brand new manager, I want a very experienced one but this wait is not appropriate, we should have had another manager months ago. My patience like most people has long since gone.
Inept, circus, fools....these are all words that come to mind when I am asked to wait for a manager. I have no faith in them whatsoever.
A good manager today please, no more wait wait!

He is merely Steve Kean with hair. And less tactical nous.

Yes we need a new manager, and one that is dynamic, inspiring and results driven. We don't want a one trick pony, who will get us promoted with boring direct football. We had that before with stability and the so called fans wanted him out!! Sam was the man, but few liked him. I won't go as far as to say who I would like as Gaffer but all I will say is, if this pathetic divide between the fans and so called supporter group hero's carries on our club will die. The infighting from fans is far more damaging than any owner or so called manager could ever create, think about it? The worse thing is if this is not sorted out before the 2nd December we will be beaten by Burnley and the future will never be the same!!
It is that serious get behind the club and we will fly!!!
Best wishes

This Eric Black is a perceptive one.

Then at least you might start mounting the odd attack every 40 minutes or so.

Eric Black is part of the problem, not part of the solution. Shebby The Snake picks the team, not the manager or the interim, part time, assistant apprentice, trainee manager.
In Shebby The Snake's desperate, pathetic attempt to curry favour ( pardon the pun ) with the fans, I am surprised that he has not invited his cronies round to the Blus Bar again to pick the team for tomorrow by committe.

Not sure how well he is managing Rhodes though, he's not looking at his strengths.
