Rovers thank returning fans

Fans pack into the Blackburn End lower tier for Saturday's clash with Wolves Fans pack into the Blackburn End lower tier for Saturday's clash with Wolves

THOUSANDS of Blackburn Rovers fans returned to Ewood Park for the first home game since the resignation of manager Steve Kean.

It followed a call from the Lancashire Telegraph, echoed by caretaker boss Eric Black, for fans to get behind the team following a drop in crowds.

A total of 17,034 watched Rovers in their 1-0 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers – Blackburn’s previous highest attendance this season was 13,935 against Leicester in August.

And it was dramatically higher than the 12,772 that turned out for the 2-1 home victory over Barnsley in September.

Many fans had pledged to stay away from Ewood while Kean, whose tenure was marred by last season’s devastating relegation from the Premier League, was manager. Global adviser Shebby Singh said: “It was very, very important that the fans came.

“They came in their numbers and their support was fantastic. It was a most welcome sight.

“I would like to thank them all for their support and I look forward to bigger crowds in the coming games.”

Former Rovers striker Kevin Gallagher said: “People voted with their feet and crowds were down to 12,000 so it was nice to see 17,000 there on Saturday.

“It was just a shame the players couldn’t give them a victory.

“It wasn’t that noisy, people were perhaps a bit tentative because of the way the game was played.

“When we were relegated in 1999 the club had crowds of 19,000 so that has to be the target to try to get back to.

“Hopefully in the next few games now the fans will keep coming back and everyone can join as one and the future will be bright for the club.

“I think the managerial appointment is what people are looking to now.”

I came back because kean had gone. Thousands in the darwen end were treated disgacefully last season. Anything changed? Not much.My son went to the toilet at 1/2 time. He tried to get back to me but a numpty steward dressed in a black suit with shades witha charisma bypass who refused to speak-"resistance is useless" stood in the middl of the stairway refusing to let anyone pass even though there were lots of empty seats around me. it started to turn ugly. People were VERY annoyed. I told a steward if he didn't let my son rejoin me there would be trouble. He saw sense and told numpty to let him through. Why cant thisclub get anything right? I don't know when/if we'll be back to be treated like that.

Likewise, I came back because Fester had realised he didn't have a clue and left, but I won't be back for exactly the same reason - this is the message I sent to BRFC at tellus@brfc.co.uk -

"Like many I returned to Ewood Park today (1st time in almost 18 months for myself as I did not trust Steve Kean or understand/agree with his appointment or anything else that has happened at BRFC since the change of ownership) to watch the team I have supported for many years, but I felt compelled to contact you to advise that I will not be returning for the foreseeable future if ever, not due to the lack of quality of football, but solely due to the manner in which the stewarding is carried out at Ewood Park and incidents I witnessed during today's game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

To explain, as I did for a couple of seasons, I watched the game from the Darwen End and sat as I always have behind the goal as high as possible, this is my preferred viewing position. About halfway through the first half, after the usual good natured banter between fans (I must point out that this exchange of banter is not something I do or have taken part in) a Wolverhampton Wanderers supporter screamed out a stream of foul language and threats of what he was going to do to a particular Blackburn Rovers supporter, who was probably not innocent, outside the ground after the game, in the process drawing a lot of laughs from the Blackburn supporters and a few glances at the stewards. The stewards reaction was incredible, one in particular, I believe he was a team leader or manager (he was wearing a white shirt & glasses and had grey hair), was to stand and stare at the targeted Blackburn Rovers supporter who had been threatened for almost 5 minutes and did not say a single word to the Wolverhampton supporter. I then mentioned to the steward stood closest to me that that was the reason why many fans wouldn't come back to Ewood Park whilst those type of stewarding practices were employed, his response was it was the Rovers supporters fault for starting it and that the best thing for me to do was to ignore the Wolverhampton fans and just watch the match - at that point I ignored everything else he said to me as he was obviously saying what he'd been briefed to say in the pre-match meeting, I also ignored his few attempts to engage with me to discuss the game as it went on.

About 20 minutes later (just before half time) another man on the same row as me (very back row) shouted back at a group of Wolverhampton fans who were constantly shouting abuse to shut the F up, the steward (who was stood closest to me) first action was to tell the man to stop and ignore the Wolverhampton fans and to just watch the match, he then asked the man sarcastically 'How old are you?'

At no point where the 5 or 6 Wolverhampton fans, stood at the back of the Riverside closest to the Blackburn fans, told to stop shouting and just watch the match.

The incident that totally repulsed me occurred when the same group of Wolverhampton supporters started shouting racist comments to a 13 or 14 year old boy stood to my left about his oriental origins. I heard them quite clearly as did the young boy who looked a little upset by what was being shouted at him. The stewards did not do a single thing about this, the steward (white shirt, glasses, grey hair) was stood next to the group when this happened and he didn't do or say anything to them."

And that is why the club I have supported for many years is a shadow of its former self. Thanks Venkys dismantling a football club and trying to run it like a chicken farm - clueless, idiotic and guilty.

Gutted actually. I hoped Saturday would be a great day, loads of extra fans back, great atmosphere, and a good performance & win.

The fans came back, and atmosphere was MUCH better - credit to the Darwen end guys particularly, loads of singing come from them.

But the team that Kean built hasn't magically got better since he's gone sadly. Blacks done himself no favours either by going ultra defensive.

So what could have been a great re-birth, was instead a big disappointment. I hope the returning fans are realistic though, and didnt expect miracles, and continue to attend going forward.

Appointing a good manager that everyone can get behind would make a big difference in this respect.

Sorry but I shall not return until an experienced manager is appointed. I suspect I will not be the only one not returning.
That was probably the highest crowd of the season if nothing is done. Lucky to get 10000 next home match.

List of excuses not to attend in no particular order.
I'm not going again because:-
1. The stewards are no good.
2. I have to see who the next manager is.
3 Eric Black is a Kean stooge
4 Shebby is really picking the team.
5. The crusts on the pies is thicker than last year.
6 Pudsey Bear never made an appearance for my three year old.
7 Murphy is crap.
8 Orr is crap as well.
9 The sun is low in the sky so I can see the game better on TV.
10. Someone kept moving in front and he was nine foot tall.
11 The standard of refereeing is a joke.
12 We have no shirt sponsor.
13 Christmas is coming.

Please add to the premier league glory hunter list of excuses, I may even write a book on them.

All in all Ewood, and especially the Darwen End, is not a particularly pleasant place to visit at the moment, exacerbated by the "Venkys Private Army" attitude of the current stewarding arrangements. I wouldn't be surprised if a very serious incident ensued due to their current heavy handling of the club's OWN supporters.Couple this with the club's failure to endorse its own support against the current onslaught of criticism in the media then Venkys are lucky to get 17 hundred on, let alone 17000.

The club is an absolute shambles and urgently needs sorting. About 20 minutes later (just before half time) another man on the same row as me (very back row) shouted back at a group of Wolverhampton fans who were constantly shouting abuse to shut the F up, the steward (who was stood closest to me) first action was to tell the man to stop and ignore the Wolverhampton fans and to just watch the match, he then asked the man sarcastically 'How old are you?' At no point where the 5 or 6 Wolverhampton fans, stood at the back of the Riverside closest to the Blackburn fans, told to stop shouting and just watch the match. The incident that totally repulsed me occurred when the same group of Wolverhampton supporters started shouting racist comments to a 13 or 14 year old boy stood to my left about his oriental origins. I heard them quite clearly as did the young boy who looked a little upset by what was being shouted at him. The stewards did not do a single thing about this, the steward (white shirt, glasses, grey hair) was stood next to the group when this happened and he didn't do or say anything to them." And that is why the club I have supported for many years is a shadow of its former self. Thanks Venkys dismantling a football club and trying to run it like a chicken farm - clueless, idiotic and guilty.[/p][/quote]The stewards brief. as levelled by the current regime and a hangover from last season, is to identify and eject dissenting banners and voices on the basis that these are "a disturbance to the peace". Shebby is not picking the team. If he was, Rochina and the more technical players would be playing, which is exactly what we need in my view.

Shebby, please pick the team for the next game? If we get Gomes, Rochina, Formica/Nunes in one team with the holding players to support, we will be playing 1 touch football, not 10 touches and then giving the ball away!

Fickle Fan....I am the first to admit that I moan. But in my defence I think we have a lot to moan about. Try as I might I cannot take any positives out of Saturday's performance, other than it wasn't raining. You may have money to burn but £19 to watch that, can't even call it football, is just too much. The players are not to blame, well maybe Murphy, but the rest are going through the motions because they obviously have no idea what they are supposed to be doing. If in doubt pass it backwards. What is that all about? As I have said so often, football is a simple game. Down the wings cross to centre, bang! back of net. Time and time again you see Man U, Chelsea etc etc do the simple things resulting in a goal. If you have the ball the opposition can't score.

And that's saying something, it was a truly appauling exhibition of how not to do it.

No-one with any football acumen would have picked that team in that formation, so who the hell picked it Shebby maybe? I think the Tea Lady would have done a better job.

Kean gone and true to my word, my family returned to Ewood, I usually sit the the Walker Steel stand but the pricing was crazy so paid £19 in the old riverside, good atmosphere and good banter before the game. Get the pricing down and more people will come, not everyone can afford a season ticket.

The game itself rubbish, how can you play wing-backs if they don't cross the halfway line, 3 centre halves who cant pass a ball and old father time in midfield (Murphy) I thought Ray Wilkins had returned , side ways and back never looking forward.

It's alright thanking the fans, but it was just disgraceful to see all those in the directors box clear-off 10 minutes before the final whistle! (Yet again) So much for leading by example. And to all those posters who keep saying "Rovers should walk this league...", judging by what I saw on Saturday, the new manager will have one hell of a job on his hands. I have never witnessed such a negative home performance from a tactically inept team, sadly this is still SK's squad. Simply awful.

More "presence" in the stands than up front! Playing at home with an increased crowd and what do we do?.... blow it, big time thanks to Kean's cronies and their (his) tactics. If Black thinks he's going to get the Manager's job and win back the fans, forget it. Three at the back, lone striker (costing £8 million) up front, an unfit side, a Captain who has not put a shift in since coming to Ewood. As for the post-match comments by Black, well it was like Kean was still there! Is it little wonder fans are still unhappy?

Sorry but I shall not return until an experienced manager is appointed. I suspect I will not be the only one not returning.
That was probably the highest crowd of the season if nothing is done. Lucky to get 10000 next home match.
Well said, and same here. Venkys can't expect us to return just because Kean has gone, they will have to earn it. Appoint the proper manager and the crowds will return - guaranteed.

Some fans equate realism, common sense and TLC with glory hunting. There is nothing wrong with wanting value for money and showing your feelings when the team do not perform. When the team fails to perform regularly, those fans that care express themselves more strongly because WE CARE!

What good will it do if Venkys appoint an inexperienced manager on the cheap who perhaps stabilises the club as a mid-table championship side, but is more likely to drag us down even further? THAT IS VERY LIKELY TO HAPPEN IF WE JUST GO ALONG WITH THE STATUS QUO! Yes we want glory, but so does every other fan. It's natural. We want our team to win and mix it with the best of 'em.

We got relegated because we were a poor team. The nucleus of that poor team still play for us. That poor team team is not going to change overnight into a good team.
Returning fans who thought they'd be in for a footballing treat on Saturday were very very naive to think so, and tbh some posters who will not return again for 'footballing' reasons, well, you do come over as a bit pathetic really.

More weasel words from from the former muck-mouth Keep Darwen Green. I explained that I found your comments offensive especially because of my friend's child.

Every Rovers fan that comes on here knows your a tedious pr!ck. Are you exhortations for "Glory Hunters", as you call them, to stop going to Ewood supposed to increase the gate somehow? No wonder you were a former Ken luvvie with logic like that. You were prepared to give Kean one and a half seasons but have no hesitation in belittling, defaming, denigrating and abusing geniune Rovers supporters.

You were wrong about Kean and you were wrong about the impact of the boycott. Don't bother replying kn0bhead.

I find it quite sad that I was sat on row 30 my son and daughter who are 9 and 5 that both sets of supporters where as guilty as each other, as for the comments about the stewards some are quite just especially the one who just looked at the rovers supporter, but in this case I have to idisagree with some ofyour out burst, firstly it is not the stewards responsibility in the Blackburn side to speak to the away supporters that has to be done by away stewards and second the young lad who seems to have been abused verbally also said a few choice words as for the gentleman I use this term loosely did he not shout a few extremities and threaten to steam in oh and let's not forget he had three children with him now these children looked really young, I dare say that the people you seem to be chastising where under the circumstance only doing there job under greats duress from both sides and if this steward did say how old are you just watch the game then people shoul look at the whole picture rather than quote wrong and negative information give the stewards a break they have a difficult job as it is if it weren't for stewards there would be no football so I for one think most are well mannered and curtious I've supported the rovers for 37 years and never had problem so a suggested watch the match ignore what goes on around you let the people do there job.

AIA explained that the stewards ignored the racist abuse that was coming across from individuals located in the Wolves section. That cannot be considered to be getting on with the job difficult or otherwise. The steward in question was wearing a BRFC-badged tunic.

Well said - people who expected a team who had been devoid of tactics for the last 18 months are truly deluded if they expected the team to become world beaters overnight.

Yes it was a p@ss poor performance and the only positive I can take from it is that Black won't get the job off the back of the last 3 games.

The stewards have a difficult job?

From what I saw on Saturday the majority sat on their backsides doing nothing - apart from those that harassed the home supporters.

The individual steward I refered to was in the Wolverhampton side of the Darwen End stood next to the person shouting racist comments.

I also stated that the individual targeted by the screaming Wolverhampton fan was probably not innocent and it was until the Wolverhampton Wanderers 'fan' screamed across at the top of his voice that I was ignoring the idiotic screams of what I can only refer to as idiots.

I also mentioned that the individual stood near me shouted back with expletives and that he was told to shut up and watch the match - why was this not done by the 'single' steward I could see stood in the Wolverhampton Wanderers side of the stand to the 'fans' in the visitors side, maybe that is because the home supporters are felt to be more troublesome for having the mental capacity to have their own opinions and dare to express themselves in a free speech society, I may be wrong.

Ewood Park seems to be the only ground I have been to (and there are many both in this country and abroad) where there are more stewards in with the home supporters than there are with the visiting supporters.

But, as awful as the football was, I was prepared to start going back, I'm sorry to say that I won't be going back if the treatment of the home supporters is to be of that I have described and that racist abuse is tolerated.

I for one can't support that.

Enjoy.

Rovers is like most other clubs with the fair weather support, no better no worse, JUST ADMIT IT INSTEAD OF JUSTIFYING IT.
Lot of em like the prestige of watching big clubs with well known players strutting their stuff, win loose or draw at just over a 12quid a throw it was a bargain in the prem.
Now they're faced with relative no-mark teams and players they've 5hit out.
The REAL support was at Forest on weds, or any other away game this season.
And Yes we've had worse sh1t than this is the 40 years I've followed Rovers, worse players, worse facilities, etc etc.
Sick of listening to the moaning tw@ts on here.
Here listen, Flowers ain't in goal, we don't have the SAS, we don't get robbed anymore with dodgy last min goals at the concrete ashtray and then still go on and win the league!
Jack walkers not around.

For those of you who complain about fans not returning, let me spell out some realities.
The problem was not Kean, though him going is great. But the problem was and is the way Venkys run the club. The appointment of Shebby as a "global adviser" when we simply need a "Championship adviser" heaped more ridicule on Rovers.
There is still more than a whiff of players being signed to suit the needs of agents on a percentage.
The players are clueless, no leadership on or off the field and some, principally Murphy, are obvioiusly here for the pay cheque.
And given there was the expected boost in the gate, could the players, management rise to the occasion ? Could they f***.
Finally there's a recession on, wages are poor, people are worried about the future so why put cash into the Venkys' Indian bank account, that's where the gate money is going - not into Rovers as a football club.
So why I should I go ? After 50 years as a Rovers fan, and I supported Rovers when they were bottom of the old Div 3, I'm not having my "loyalty" called into question by kids who think Allan Shearer at Ewood was a long time ago. I'm just careful with my cash and not naive enough to hand it over to Venkys.
Let's see what kind of manager they pick. Anyone who takes over on the basis of owners in India, money paid into Indian accounts and under the supervision of a "global adviser" who has never even played in England, is... (fill in the blank yourselves).
If it's a good appointment, I'll go and have a look and wish the new manager well. But season ticket ? Not yet.
For those of you who complain about fans not returning, let me spell out some realities. The problem was not Kean, though him going is great. But the problem was and is the way Venkys run the club. You, like a few more who have commented on these pages have changed the goal post Darener ! First on here was thousands back when Kean gets the sack. Now it's I will not be back until we get an experienced manager. Very ambiguous that one Darener ! I know it was the same old rubbish on Saturday. We were all fed up with the performance but let's no all be so fickle & give the new manager a chance, whoever it might be!

Gonna take a bit of time to fix this team into a good solid championship side, don't forget a lot of these players are what Kean thought were good players, and to be brutally honest some are not. A new manager is going to have to work minor miracles to get this present squad playing together as a team and getting the right results. We used to have a manager capable of that in Sam Allardyce, it wasn't pretty, but on a shoestring budget, he did the business and I think with more money backing him, he would eventually have had a more entertaining style of football.

I am getting pretty sick of what are seemingly fairly recent devotees of BRFC, this when they spout about fair weather supporters and glory hunters!
Do these guys really know the history of BRFC i.e. pre the 1990's?
Fair weather? so fair weather is a wild wet night in the open at say Halifax, Rochdale, Bury etc. is it. Playing in the mid lower reaches of the third div.

I think some of these guys need a reality check, as they have maybe sat on their arse undercover for all of their 'loyal' supportership.

And as for we only want to see Prem footy, well I have news for you, this one doesn't particularly, I have seen enough of that to make me more than a little disillusioned with the whole circus. Watched v'v little of MOTD well before BRFC dropped, now watch none.
Given better owners and a decent able manager, I could now be enjoying some good competitive Champs football on a generally 'even' playing field.

He said he will not return until a decent manager is appointed. Then you crit him and say he should give the the manager a chance (one that has yet to be installed) . Just where is it he has said he will not ???

I think you are also forgetting what happened the last time the post was vacated, don't you think this may have some bearing upon the large numbers of peoples hesitation regarding Venkys next move !

I did keep my promise to return once Kean left. I did NOT say I would continue to go irrespective of the standard of football played. After Saturday's performance it is obvious the players need an experienced back room team to get them to play proper football. If they appoint the right man and only time will tell, then I shall return full time. As for Fickle, I will not be accused of being a Pl glory hunter without responding. Get this into your thick skull.
I HAVE BEEN GOING TO WATCH the ROVERS for OVER 60 YEARS. First match sat over the wall on a wooden bench Nuttall St stand near corner flag towards Blackburn End.

Probably true! But there is only so much a body can take. At least when we had bad games in the past it was usually because we had bad players now we have good players being totally misused. To see such talented players made to kick the ball about like a playtime kick about is more than we should have to endure, until such time that we get our club in order I shall watch from afar.
