JAMES Grummett has been identified as a possible Olympic sailor of the future after he was selected for the topper national junior squad.

The QEGS pupil earned his place among the elite fleet of youngsters following an impressive summer on the waters. The national junior squad is regarded as the pinnacle of the coaching structure for sailors aged under 16 with an aim to “develop sailors of the appropriate age and ability to win medals for RYA Team GBR at major international regattas at Youth and Olympic level”.

And James, 13, underlined his talent after finishing as first under 14s in the Topper World Championships in the Netherlands – where he qualified for the gold fleet race.

James, from Clitheroe, started the summer at the National Regatta at the Weymouth Olympic venue and finished a creditable 78th out of 217 – in a strong fleet in which he is still one of the younger sailors.

In the NW Area Championships at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club in the Lake District, James finished as overall winner and is currently the Topper NW Area champion.

He also finishes fourth overall in his age group in Topper National Championships in Pwllheli.
