Shebby: 'We will get the right man for Rovers'
8:57am Tuesday 2nd October 2012 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
Blackburn Rovers global advisor Shebby Singh
SHEBBY Singh has assured Blackburn Rovers fans he WILL find the right man for the managerial hot seat – after urging the Ewood Park faithful to return to the club.
Rovers’ global adviser has appealed for calm as the club start a “patient” and “extensive” search for Steve Kean’s successor, but insists the final outcome will be based on a “wise footballing decision”.
Singh revealed Rovers’ ticket office had reported a significant upsurge in activity over the weekend, following Friday night’s shock resignation of Steve Kean, and has called for a return of the Ewood Park 12th man for Saturday’s visit of Wolves and beyond.
Singh also confirmed Kean’s assistant Eric Black would be at the helm for tomorrow’s trip to Nottingham Forest and Wolves’ weekend visit, claiming it was vital the club united together once more.
The Lancashire Telegraph understand former Rovers striker Alan Shearer would be interested in finding out more about the position, with the likes of Henning Berg, Garry Flitcroft and Tim Sherwood understood to be interested in the role.
Spurs are likely to make a potential White Hart Lane exit for Sherwood almost impossible though, as Rovers’ board look to ensure no stone is left unturned in their pursuit of the right appointment.
He said: “I’m appealing for calm this week, that is very, very important. We have two important games coming up in the next few games and we can’t let anything take our focus off them.
“We are not going to set any timescales and we are not going to call Eric Black a ‘caretaker manager’, he is our manager for the next two games and he needs everyone’s support.
“We are not going to rush anything now. We have had a lot of applicants already and we will look at them and draw up a shortlist. We have to be very, very careful how we select the next manager or to see if we already have the next manager.
“This is my responsibility to get the right man and I will make sure I make a wise footballing decision. I know I will make that.”
Rovers’ Premier League relegation combined with Steve Kean’s unpopularity at the club has seen attendances at Ewood dwindle this season.
But, with the under fire Kean now having left the club, Singh hopes Rovers can move He said: “We hope the supporters can be our 12th man again. I can’t underestimate the importance of a full ground with our great fans being that 12th man.
“There were queues outside the ticket office on Saturday and we opened on Sunday as well and that is great to hear.
“Hopefully this can carry on because the fans can make a big difference for us.”
Meanwhile, former Rovers’ Premier League winning defender Henning Berg has indicated he would be interested in discussing the vacant position.
The 43-year-old former Lillestrom manager declined to comment outright on whether he wanted the job but was quick stress how much Rovers meant to him.
He said: “This is a chance for the owners to move the club in the right direction. It is up to them to decide what route they want to take and what type of manager they want.
“It is no secret Blackburn Rovers mean a lot to me. I spent seven and a half years at the club and I experienced so much there.
“I have managed in Norway for seven years and am now doing a bit of work TV2 in Norway. Blackburn Rovers means a lot to me and I am sure there will be a lot of interest in the club.”

But, this was before I read the above interview.
I now have had to change my mind somewhat, as when reading 'lets call him manager for now, not caretaker'. And 'maybe we have the right man already', indicates that he is giving him x games in order to stake his claim.
So, if he secures say 3 out of 3 wins, just like Kean it would make it difficult to then reject him in favour of a untried new man, plus of course it would be the much cheaper option.
This to my mind seems to put Black in the driving seat.
No offence to Black, but I sincerely hope this is not the case, as I am fairly sure this would case huge dismay within the fan base i.e. here we go again, nothings changed.

Judan Ali the English born Asian football coach is apparently on the list as is Henrik Larsson now. Ali surely is only on there as a token gesture to the Owners? But Larsson could be a strong contender given his top level footballing career and his full EUFA Pro Licence. He could pass some of Barca's secrets on! Sherwood is still number one choice though....if we ever get the chance to 'officially' speak to him!

The history of football is peppered with great footballers going into management and tarring their reputations, prime example was Bobby Charlton taking over at PNE but there are scores of them, look at the passion big Sam has , Martin O`Neil has , Fergie has ,Moyes has ,Holloway has , if you see these guys on the touchline managing, coaxing your team ,you will not be shirking out of tackles/runs ,Black and Hendry hide in the enclosure ,because they have not got what it takes to be that type of manager ,a manager who will drag the team across the line.

Championship proven - promotion to PL with an unfancied team on a tiny budget. Great football. Great Character and definitely not a yes man.
The last two characteristics being the most important as far as this club is concerned.

Why will Black be the next manager ? - because he is a happy compromise for all the owners (and the owners couldnt give a flying fcuk what us supporters want or think - they have clearly demonstrated that time and time again over the last few years. All the owners want differing things out of the club and a manager who can be "manipulated" and dictated to by all parties - especially one that has JA as their agent, to them, would be the ideal candidate.
All the other ex-players being mentioned are just a smokescreen to drive ticket sales.
Eric Black is NOT Steve Kean, he is someone with management credentials and he is not, (unlike his predecessor), mentally ill and I'm sure he's a decent bloke but his appointment would NOT heal the rift between the club and large chunks of the fan base and for this reason ALONE he must NOT, under any circumstances be given the job (the club cannot be allowed to be fractured again - it simply may never recover).

Now we need to see the fans getting behind the team in big numbers and giving the owners the time they need to make the right decisions for the future. A part of the decision-making process should be the effect on the fans of any appointment.
Harmony going forward is going to be much more important in this case than is usual and I think that Shebby is 'wise' enough to recognise the need for a manager who can bring an end to the disconnection between Club and fans which has characterised the Venkys reign to date.
He needs to know that we are not looking for a former star to come back to the Club but that we are looking for the best man that we can attract. If a Shearer or a Sherwood were to come in and flop their former star-status would count for nothing with the fans.
We have an excellent squad and many potential managers would relish the chance to work with it.
We fans must acknowledge two things however - 1) we are not all going to agree with the appointment and 2) the recent ownership track record at Ewood will put off many who might otherwise apply.
Finally, exciting times might really be round the corner!

Lets be cleary - EB is NOT SK, however his IS tarnished with the SK/JA brush and therefore for a large section of the Rovers fan base this is totally unacceptable.
It is time for us all to put the last 2 years behind us and move forwards TOGETHER - in order to do that then the owners must fulfill 1 simple task - appoint a manager who has no ties with SK or JA (JA is EB agent) and who can be his own man - how difficult can that be ??
The next appointment will show us all we need to know about Venkys and their ownership plans and the (true) ownership of BRFC.

Not until Venky’s have sold to owners who understand and care about football, or at the very least appoint the right people in the dugout and the boardroom, will the circus leave Ewood Park.
When the searchlight of critical analysis is turned on Blackburn’s decline on the pitch over the past 18 months and the damage wrought on the club’s deep roots in the community, Kean is a symbol, a symptom and a cause of the chaos.
Only those unfamiliar with events inside Ewood, and Kean’s behaviour, will dare criticise diehards who rebelled against him.
Ill-judged barbs have been launched at Blackburn fans over their “Kean Out” campaign, ignoring their traditional demeanour.
Down the decades, Rovers fans hardly held a reputation as easily-enraged mutineers. Just the opposite. They are known for their loyalty to their club. And it is their club.
Owners, managers and players come and go but parents pass on footballing affiliations to their offspring, generation to generation. Rovers’ faithful should be held up as an example of fans who fought for their club. They care.
Even with rival clubs competing for their affections, including the temptation of Manchester United or City down the road, most in the Blackburn area have stayed strong, sticking with their one love, with Rovers, even if they have temporarily stayed away in disgust at Kean.
The turnstiles will click excitedly with fans returning to the fold this Saturday, thronging to the Championship game against Wolves. Rovers are in their blood.
Rather than pillory Blackburn’s support, as some have, let us hope all other clubs have fans equally quick to raise the alarm. The double-trouble act of Kean-Venky’s immediately concerned Rovers followers. The Premier League was warned about their unsuitability.
When Rovers were inevitably relegated last May, the Football League was swiftly told to investigate whether Venky’s were fit and proper owners.
The League Managers Association was asked last year privately whether Kean was a fit and proper manager. Barnum and Bailey’s arrival at Ewood has long been debated in football’s corridors of power.
Little has been done, so the fans had even more of a right to intervene.
Supporters’ suspicions about Kean began early. He stepped in after a perfectly good manager, Sam Allardyce, was dismissed. Experienced players left Ewood, some of them muttering concerns about strange occurrences inside the building.
Kean was consistently backed by Mrs Desai, Venky’s driving force, who had little knowledge of English football. And why should she? Mrs Desai’s forte is selling chickens in India.
Yet Kean had her ear. She liked him, and his wife, but that is no way to run an organisation that is partly a major business operation, partly a complex emotional institution.
Those decrying Blackburn devotees should remember they were the first to register unease when pillars of their club, such able administrators as John Williams and Tom Finn, were forced out.
Williams and Finn are so respected within the game that their departure was inexplicable. Why lose talent?
Rovers lacked direction, proper footballing expertise, soul. Fans also became aggrieved at the influence of agents within Ewood, although this has ebbed.
Principles that Blackburn had long embodied, being a heartbeat of the community, engaging with fans, doing things the right way, were spurned. The spirit of Jack Walker was shredded. So the fans began expressing their dissatisfaction, eventually their dissent.
Kean brought further embarrassment on the club with his drink-driving ban and then a few injudicious comments about Allardyce recorded by a supporter.
During this period, the fans’ frustration spilt over into anger. Ewood became a bear-pit for certain games, not for the opposition but for the home manager.
Bolton Wanderers’ visit on Dec 20, 2011 was the most brutal, the abuse relentless towards Kean. The owners should have acted then, removing Kean, but he had some strange hold over Venky’s. That hold has been broken. But a tension remains.

Sherwood is clear fav still with the majority of bookies.
Shearer is around 6-1 but the highest mover is Henrik Larsson who came from nowhere to being 4th favourite along with Camacho the Spanish former Real Madrid and Benfica manager. Hill is in this group also.
Judan Ali is still around 20-1 along with McCarthy. Maradona is 100-1 and Pep is 250-1. Step-up and place your bets!
Rovers manager to be named within 10 days and my money is going on Sherwood now - as if Spurs do give him the chance to talk to the Rovers his price will go odds-on and/or all betting will stop.

The first big step was getting shut of the Odious one and the next step is appointing a new manager who will take us forward. Yes the club will be judged on who the new manager is - you can never please everyone - but whoever it is should be given both time and the fans full support. The back-biting and critical outlook on everything Rovers simply has to end for us to move forward.
And why should the owners have to re-organize the 'inner-workings' of the club if the new manager gets the team playing well and getting the results? The boardroom is the business of the owners, ordinary fans cannot expect to dictate 'what' goes on or 'who' goes in regards the inner sanctum of the club, despite Shebby's apparent open attitude to the running of the club. Maybe if we can get supporters representatives onto the board then things may be more open but until then lets just concentrate on moving forward as a club, as a team - all together again at last.
If you mean they should employ Williams and Finn again well yes that would be nice in dreamland, but that will never happen now, that time is gone.

As for the woodworm it would have to be a 'professional' company that came in and eradicated that, the fans cannot do it. The 'professional' company would have to purchase the club to be able to deal with the root cause of the problem - but I don't see any potential buyers out there right now. So we may just have to hope that the 'pests' stay dormant for a while now.

What I'm driving at here is: what is the main motivation now behind the Venkys? It seemed at first to be naive appointment of Kean and belief in his **** that he could take Rovers to the top. Then all logic said it must be they are asset-stripping the club and don't really care about Rovers. Now I think it is half-optimism about a brand new start having learned some lessons, and half-fear of losing money and so appointing the easy option (Black), leaving Shebby to explain it all to the fans, while they decide whether to strip the club altogether or have a good go at making their football experiment profitable by more traditional methods.
At the end of the day, Venkatesh, Balaji and Anurahda will have to agree on their direction and motives because they must know by now that it will be a shambles if they don't. I hope they decide to leave all footballing decisions to tried and tested experienced people - in other words have faith in the fans and have faith in an independent, experienced manager to lead the way.

Ian Holloway at the moment is considered to be the best thing since sliced bread. Admittedly he has done a very good job at Blackpool, however did get them relegated. People label Mick McCarthy as 'boring' and would take us back down if we got up. Well maybe, but McCarthy has two promotions and managed to keep Wolves up for several years - something Holloway has never done. For me Holloway is too one dimensional - great to watch when it works but no plan B when it goes wrong.
People are now raving about Hoddle and Wilkins - neither have been managers for a long time and neither were very successful in their last managerial jobs. Hoddle sacked from mid-table Championship Wolves and bottom half Spurs, Wilkins hasn't managed for 15 years.
Not quite sure what the idea is with linking virtually every ex-player to the job is either. Flitcroft, Sherwood, Shearer, Berg, even Flowers and Short! Too many people letting their hearts rule their heads - they need to go and be successful in League 1 or 2 before a club in our position should even consider them.
The following are in the 'appropriate' category to take over a club that needs immediate promotion and a steady hand:
Alan Curbishley
Billy Davies
Harry Redknapp
Mick McCarthy
Simon Grayson

Kean never got the bullet, and perhaps the VENKY clan were relying on him leaving and had no future plans to sack him, but thinking if he leaves it will save us a million quid or so in wages.
Again making Black manager is again another penny pinching exercise , not being done to get the best man for the job but for the cheapest man/option.
I think Black who is probably a very capable lieutenant is simply not a general ,surely he must agree with that himself after all his previous failed attempts at management ,there seems to be some terrific people applying but what we need to look for is an experienced manager ,a man who has managed a big club before and has had some success, we do need a manager who will bring in his own coaching staff ,we need a clean sweep and get rid of the coaching staff that are there ,they are Keans people and they wont be accepted ,anyway Black might not want to work under another manager , and Hendry (Keans drinking pal) is hopeless as a defensive coach or any coach for that matter his previous attempts at management were feeble , he nearly ruined Blackpool.

Everything I have been telling you about Steve Kean over the past 18 months is now coming to fruition.
I have consistently said Kean “Plays the blame game” none more so than now.
As Kean prepares the ground for his constructive dismissal case, he has issued a statement suggesting the owners were interfering in team selection – NOT TRUE.
Kean is laying the foundations to take Mrs Anuradha Desai to the ‘cleaners’. Back in August Kean issued a statement to the National press saying that three new signings made on transfer deadline day were not of his choice. He went on to say that he had never even seen them play and had been signed by director Shebby Singh.
This heaped further indignation upon the Venky’s regime from the National press.
At the time I wondered why Kean had made such a statement knowing the club would be ridiculed by the press. I suggested on this site in an article headed, “KEAN TARGET’S SINGH” posted 13th September 2012. That he had released the statement to discredit Singh in order to fall back on, when results went wrong, and blame Singh.
But I was wrong. Kean was planning his escape route, he knew Mrs Desai (pic above) would not sack him, but he wanted out. The only way was to resign and sue for constructive dismissal (see article,KEAN RESIGNS ON LEGAL ADVICE, 29th September 2012). A far more profitable avenue for Kean.
Kean’s carefully press fed statements allied with the ridiculous points total allegedly set by Shebby Singh and Singh’s ill-advised rant at a pre-season fan’s forum, when he talked of sacking Kean, will be enough for Kean’s lawyers to have a ‘field day’ when the case comes to court.
Had Kean taken charge of the Rovers next three games starting at Charlton, he would have been seen to be incompliance with Shebby Singh and the owner’s ultimatum that they were monitoring his future.
Under this weight of evidence Kean will extract from Mrs Anuradha Desai a large part of the family fortune and make a ‘killing’.
The phone call to his hotel room at 5.30pm on Friday 28th September from his legal advisors told him so, and to resign immediately, which he did an hour or so later.
Kean is so gutless he did not have the decency to talk to the woman who has championed him, looked after him, fought for him and given him wealth he could never of dreamed of. Kean is now a millionaire in his own right because of Mrs Anuradha Desai.
The court case he is about to bring is despicable and just about sums up the man. But I have been telling this to Mrs Desai and her brothers for months. I do not know if she ever views ‘REG’ but I have sent her countless emails warning her, what Kean would do to her, her family and her club.
DID SHE LISTEN, NO !
Just as no one listened to me back in December 2011 when I warned them what was about to happen to the club.
Now Mrs Desai is going to have to learn the hard way, she should have listened to Deputy Chief Executive Paul Hunt when he wanted Kean sacking in January 2012. Instead she sacked Paul Hunt. She should have listened to brother Ventkatesh when he wanted Kean sacking in May 2012. She should have listened to Shebby Singh when he asked her to sack Kean 2 weeks ago.
She should have sacked him and paid up his contract, it would have been a far cheaper option and Kean knew this.
The only consolation Anurandha Desai is that she is well rid of Kean. She will find she has a better club, supportive fans, better atmosphere at Ewood and if she is wise decent people working for her. There are those behind the scenes at Ewood who conspired with Kean. They need to be got rid of straight away.
Let me say Eric Black is not one of them – he is a good honest man – I hope a place can be found for him at Ewood Park if he chooses to stay. Steve Bruce at Hull City would be more than pleased to welcome Black to his backroom staff.
Reg.
Footnote:
Today’s Daily Mirror 2nd October. Suggests Kean will sue Blackburn Rovers for constructive dismissal. Catch up will you. Reg broke that story on Saturday 29th September, the day after Kean’s resignation.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer story, would love to see him at Ewood, Bernd Schuster too. Not Shearer or Sherwood, we need a proven manager, Solskjaer has won his domestic league and also learn't from SAF for 2.5 years at Old Trafford. He is young, hungry and ambitious. Knows the area and the language (something SK struggled with). Would hopefully bring his own staff too.
Fully supportive of Eric looking after things but NOT as a long term alternative.

I take it by positive posts you do not mean the above but realistic discussion of the situation, such as Venkys have a bad record so don't count your chickens before their hatched. A bird in the hand is not always worth two in the bush, especially if it's a Black bird. Trying to be realistic, I can't see Venkys going for a top name, cos it will cost too much and someone like Schuster or Redknapp would most likely demand big money for players in the transfer window. Unless of course that top man can convince them otherwise. You never know!

I wonder, if he's going to cite Singh's three amigos, he'll also be giving Hans Christian a mention. After all, it was his agent who brought in the first batch of third party signings, two of which Kean hadn't seen either (HC said he had brought them, so no fear of being sued for that one).
It seems it was something later on Friday that sparked it though, Kean was reported to be his usual insufferable self in the morning.
We'll see, I suppose.

I will be interested to see the crowd figure on Saturday. I doubt Kean's departure will add more than another 3500-4000 on the gate (once you take away Wolves' following) from the 12000 we've seen down at Ewood so far. I feel some supporters will still see too many reasons not too attend when really we need us all there pulling together. Over 20,000 filling Ewood and shouting for the team can be a massive influence. Sadly though, look back over the years and you'll see we struggle to build attendances once they have fallen (we played some of our greatest recent football under Hughes but the attendances were poor - c.20,000 only).

It's refreshing to see a journo actually look at the whole picture before releasing sound bite articles based on little more than what they see on the telly. They are a disgrace to their profession.
I've nothing against columnists having opinions about us, but only if have been reasonably well researched. If they still feel the same and tell me why, fair enough; I'll just agree to disagree.
There have been some articles/interviews which have been clearly engineered to put both Kean and Venkys in a favourable light; Matt Lawton's interview last year with Kean and Hans Christian's gut wrenching address to the nation on News of Sport on Sky to name but two. Both were released just before the Williams Finn Goodman letter was leaked. Coincidence? I think not.
And some stooge in the Grauniad, Jeremy Alexander, came out with quite possibly the most offensive and inaccurate load of bile after the Ipswich game THIS YEAR. Even fans of other clubs were posting on it saying it was simply not true and a disgrace. If they could see that from afar, it's unbelievable Alexander hadn't.
It looked like a press release from Venkys and Kean re-inventing history in a pathetic attempt to justify their tenure and the disasters they had overseen.
Good on you Henry; it sounds like you're keeping an eye on things up here and we'll be all the better for it.
As an aside; ever noticed how knowledgeable and intelligent the red top journos sound (or should that be think they sound?) on Sunday Supplement on Sky? Why then do they write their articles, match reports especially, for seven year olds?

Now, Where is the Correct Manager, club Fans action group should put a suggestion list, showing the merits and demerits of managers avalible to work with blackburn club. so they can be a participant in this process and the new manager will get breathing space to continue the season and many more years too.
We need a hard working young manager, who have a proven recored as in a toplevel club management and wining motive with a vision. If we go behind BIG NAMES, we will loose the path, this season we need to control the budget and preapre the best too. I know Venky dosn't have problem with any name in the world, but results in this season matters in this Hot job, otherwise it will be a OUT saga game .

Then it's back to the challenge to appoint a manager tomorrow.
Tim Sherwood and Black are still more or less joint favs with all the bookies - but now Ole Gunnar has joined the race it seems and the bookies have him more or less level with Shearer as 3rd favourites.
Roy Keane is at 12-1 this morning and McCarthy is drifting out a little and along with Hill, Shuster and Hitzfield is grouped around 14-1.
Surely our next manager will come form somewhere within this group of candidates. I still reckon Sherwood is the man, as despite Spurs refusal to let him talk to the Rovers (so far) he is still listed as favourite by the bookies - now why would they do that if there was no chance of him coming?
