Black will get chance to impress - as Rovers shortlist is drawn up

ERIC Black will be given the opportunity to stake his claim to become the next Rovers manager – as the club prepare today to draw up a shortlist of the other leading contenders.

Black was given the care-taker manager role in the wake of Steve Kean’s shock resignation on Friday night and the Lancashire Telegraph understands he will be given every chance to earn the role on a permanent basis.

Rovers have been warned off their Premier League winning skipper Tim Sherwood, with Tottenham Hotspur rejecting an approach by the club over the weekend for their tech-nical co-ordinator.

Global advisor Shebby Singh and managing director Derek Shaw will meet this morning to draw up a list of possible replacements.

Alan Shearer and Garry Flitcroft are also understood to be in the owners’ thoughts, with Venky’s understood to be keen on attracting a young, dynamic manager. Managerial experience at the top level is not believed to be a necessity.

Rovers sources have told the Lancashire Telegraph that Black will not be judged on Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Charlton as the stunned club tried to get grips with the timing of Kean’s exit.

But, expected to be at the helm for Wednesday’s trip to Nottingham Forest and Saturday’s visit of Wolves, Kean’s assistant Black will be seriously considered as a successor, with team performances and his own ideas expected to be closely monitored over the coming days.

Black insisted he had not even thought about whether he would like the job on a full-time basis on Saturday night but sources close to him believe he would relish the opportunity, with Rovers’ squad behind him.

He said: “I haven’t even thought about it. I haven’t even reflected on it.

“I have been rather busy since 8pm last night.

“We will see what the owners decide. The games come fast and thick. I haven’t even thought about it, it has been a bit of a whirlwind.

“The owners will decide where the club goes and I am sure they will make the right decision.”

Having been warned off by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy on Saturday, Rovers’ pursuit of Sherwood is now relying on the 43-year-old attempting to force the matter himself.

Sherwood, 43, who has been part of Spurs’ coaching set-up since 2008, yesterday insisted he was happy at White Hart Lane though.

He said: “That’s all they are – just rumours. That’s all I know about it.

“I’ve got a great job where I am.

“There ain’t nothing to consider. It’s just speculation.

“I love what I do. I’m happy at the football club – it’s a great project.”

The Lancashire Telegraph understands former Rovers skipper Flitcroft, currently manager at Evo-Stik Premier Division outfit Chorley, would be keen to discuss the role at Ewood Park, while Shearer is also believed to be interested.

A surprise name believed to be interested in the position is German boss Christoph Daum.

The 58-year-old has extensive managerial experience, including spells at Fenerbahce, FC Koln, Eintracht Frankfurt and Club Brugge.

Meanwhile discussions are understood to be continuing between Steve Kean’s representatives and Venky’s in the attempt to finalise the financial details of his exit.

Kean claimed in a statement he had been “forced to resign” due to his position “becoming untenable” but declined to comment further after legal advice.

These claims were denied vehemently by co-owner Balaji Rao.

“I received an email from Steve Kean on Friday evening around 7.30pm saying that he wanted to resign,” Rao told the Times of India.

“No we have not forced him to go. It was his decision.”

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO - have they not learned? Black is an ASSISTANT MANAGER, Kean was an ASSISTANT MANAGER. DON'T DO IT.
And why is experience at the top level not deemed a necessity? Is that not where we're heading?

Sherwood is still very much in the running......Spurs wont give him the Technical Directors role that he wants and now they wont let him even talk to the Rovers which he also wants to do.
I can see Sherwood walking out of the Lane later this week and maybe linking-up with Shearer/Newell at Ewood.

By definition Eric Black will get his chance to impress as he is the de facto manager whilst the owners sort out their shortlist and interviewing process.

There is no need for the owners to make a hasty appointment. We need to get the right man.

If Black proves that he is the man to bring back the pride to our performances and gets the results we need to be leading this division as well as making the right noises as far as the Club's relationship with the fans goes then he should be on the list with the others.

He has already distanced himself from Kean by stating that there was no interference from above on team selection, effectively scuppering Kean's chances of suing the Club.

Daniel Levy - a man whose notoriously tighter than an Italian waiters kecks, he doesn't let anyone leave unless he makes a butt-load!

Here's hoping Tim forces a move or we get Flitcroft/Jansen and inject some passion and spirit in this squad.

Balaji's grasp of English is not quite perfect - Kean's saying the situation forced him to resign, not that Venky's forced him to resign.

(Not defending Kean in any way, btw)

Christoph Daum, the man who was to become manager of Germany until he was found to have to be a massive cocaine user. No thanks.

Here we go again, out of the frying pan etc etc. Black was useless in management before, we need a winner with a track record like Hollaway, Grayson or Dicanio, not some failed manager coach like black and hendry

No i'm pretty sure Kean thinks he was pushed out by either Shebby or Venkys. Can't you see whats coming? "Legal Advise" "forced to resign"? Keans lawyers have advised him that he can take BRFC for millions in compensation and he WILL get it.

I think the team need a psychologist never mind a new manager, after the trauma of having Kean in charge.
If the Venkys think that Black is a serious contender for the post, then Rovers are finished.
They appear to be using the situation to their benefit, a few big names thrown in the hat but they really know who they have lined up for the role. Scares me.

Black is another JA/SK lacky - for Christ sake, how many people never learn !!

If we are going to go forward UNITED TOGETHER the next manager MUST NOT have any Jerome Anderson or Steve Kean allegencies.

Remember Black went on national radio and said Kean deserved a knighthood - when has he ever said anything good towards us fans ???

Anyone, and I mean ANYONE who is not already tainted by JA or SK should be warmly accepted by Rovers fans but any new manager who is just another regime/JA puppet MUST be rejected by all TRUE Rovers fans !!

Well said JC - Rishton. Black is totally tainted by his support of Kean. Apart from his comments on the radio, he also was quoted in the national & local press voicing his respect for the job Kean was doing.

Importantly though, what improved once he was appointed? what significant changes happened attributable to him? Obviously he has no understanding of defensive tactics or if he did, then he was too weak a personality to get his ideas accepted by Kean, either way it means he is not the manager we need.

My choice for manager would be Gary Neville.

He is England's most capped right back, and has proved to be an inteligent and excellent TV pundit.
His defensive skills and tactical know how were spotted by Roy Hodgson who then appointed him an England coach.

No-one has mentioned Neville, yet he lives in the North West and may be worth approaching to see if he fancies the job.

He's been quoted as saying he's happy where he is. He enjoys the job he has and he loves the club. Even if he was unhappy, do you honestly believe Sherwood, Shearer and Newell are the answer? Newell has been awful at the three clubs he's managed, Shearer has eight games managerial experience and Sherwood has none. Who exactly would be manager in this dream team of yours?

Seems the Rovers have Sherwood as their number one choice and Sherwood himself really wants the job at Ewood.

So Shearer would be Plan B - possibly with Mike Newall as his assistant.

Spurs have really dissed Sherwood when AVB declared last week that Sherwood would not get the Director of Football role that he so badly wanted at Spurs - and then at this week Spurs stopped him speaking to the Rovers. Sherwood is ready to walk any day now. All the way to Ewood....yes!

Rovers' link to Tim Sherwood was based purely on media speculation about Shebby Singh watching his favourite team. Read the article again, Sherwood says he likes the job he already has. Everything else is rumours, he says so himself, so where are you getting your information about bad blood between Sherwood and AVB?

Either way, Sherwood, Shearer and Newell are not the right men for the job.
