Highs and lows of Steve Kean's reign at Rovers
10:00am Saturday 29th September 2012 in Sport
Former manager Steve Kean
HIGHS
- August 4, 2009 – Kean joins the club’s backroom staff after being appointed by Sam Allardyce as his new first-team coach, replacing Karl Robinson. Allardyce said that from numerous applications for the past that Kean ‘stood out above the rest through his personality, experience and knowledge of football at the highest level’.
- December 13, 2010 – Kean takes over as caretaker manager of Blackburn Rovers following the dismissal of Sam Allardyce.
- December 22, 2010 – Kean is installed as the club’s permanent new manager, initially until the end of the 2010/11 season.
- December 28, 2010 – Enjoys a fine success on the road as Rovers crush West Brom 3-1 at The Hawthorns.
- January 5, 2011 – Probably his best result as Rovers manager, with Blackburn comprehensively beating Liverpool 3-1 at Ewood Park. Benjani scored twice for Rovers and Martin Olsson netted.
- January 20, 2011 – Rovers secure Kean to a new long-term contract at Ewood Park, the Scot signing a two-and-a-half year deal that runs until June 2013.
- April 30, 2011 – After going 11 games without a win and being drawn into a relegation fight, a 1-0 victory at home to Bolton Wanderers eases the pressure on Kean.
- May 22, 2011 – One of Kean’s better days as Rovers turn in one of their best displays of the season at Molineux on the final day. A 3-2 victory safeguarded their Premier League status.
- September 17, 2011 – Rovers see off Arsenal 4-3 in a thrilling Ewood Park encounter. It was to prove their last league win for more than two months.
- November 24, 2011 – Kean is handed a new contract.
- December 31, 2011 – With most expecting Kean to be sacked at any time, Rovers beat Manchester United at Old Trafford.
- March 20, 2012 – Back to back wins over Wolves and Sunderland look to have moved Rovers a step nearer safety.
LOWS
- December 26, 2011 – Suffers his first defeat in the Rovers hot-seat, crashing 2-0 at home to Stoke on Boxing Day.
- January 1, 2011 – Another horror-show on the road on New Year’s Day as Sunderland beat Rovers 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.
- January 29, 2011 to April 25, 2011 – Blackburn are sucked towards a relegation dogfight on the back of an 11-game winless streak. A total of seven defeats and four draws brings serious question marks over Kean’s capabilities at the top-level.
- June 2011 – Rovers sell Phil Jones to Manchester United.
- August 13, 2011 – Kean begins the Premier League campaign on a bad note, losing 2-1 at home to Wolves on the opening day. This is followed up by a poor display at Aston Villa.
- August 27, 2011 – Presides over the club’s worst start to a campaign for 60 years as Rovers crash to their third successive Premier League defeat, going down 1-0 to Everton at Ewood Park.
- September 17, 2011 – The official protests against Kean start for Rovers’ home game against Arsenal. They then rarely stopped.
- November 26, 2011 – A miserable 3-1 defeat at Stoke leaves Rovers without a win for eight Premier League matches.
- December 20, 2011 – The majority of Ewood Park are baying for Kean’s head after a 2-1 home defeat to Bolton followed a reverse at home to West Brom.
- The Lancashire Telegraph also called for Kean’s dismissal.
- February 4, 2012 – Rovers are thumped 7-1 at Arsenal.
- April 29, 2012 – Rovers lose at Tottenham without having a single shot on or off target.
- May 5, 2012 – Rovers are relegated with defeat at home to Wigan as a chicken is released onto the pitch.
- September 28, 2012 – Resigns as manager after weeks of pressure.

Just rung Ewood and renewed my season ticket, lost my great seat that took me years to get but it's a price worth paying.
Can't wait to get back to Ewood and feel like I'm watching my team again.

Thank god he's gone, now please cn we have a real manager. Please please get us Mick Mcarthy a good solid no nonsense football man who knows the game, knows players nd has universal respect The only issue is would he work for venky's. I have no doubt that he would love to lead Rovers, a good middle sized club, with a long history established, great facilities, recent success and a good hard core support. A a northerner with a backround in Man City amoung others Rovers would suit him down to the ground and he would take us back to the Premirship. Lets hope the Venky's get this one right but I fear that they will prefer a yes man and McCarthy is no yes man.

I was a season ticket holder for many years and my kids grew up watching Rovers, but I will not be back while these despicable people own the club.
Best wishes and good luck to all Rovers fans. I hope you get your club back one day, but sadly Rovers is no longer my club, I am enjoying watching local non league football instead.

For this reason I am going to return and hopefully play my small part in getting behind the team and would hope that all my fellow "stay aways" would do the same.
I don't want to spoil anybody's day of celebration (and Rovers fans desperately need something to celebrate) BUT the problem still remains. Venkys appointed Kean, Venkys extended his contract, Venkys gave him a long term contract, Venkys failed to support the inexperienced and incompetent manager that THEY had appointed, Venkys systematically dismantled almost everything that was good about Blackburn Rovers as a family friendly local football club, Venky's failed to sack their incompetent manager after the club were relegated, Vekys are 100% responsible for the position the club now finds itself in, Venkys still own the club.

Personally I think that Venkys should neverhave got involved in Football but were taken in/taken to the cleaners by their advisors in many respects. Not an excuse but maybe an explanation for some of the bizarre goings on at Ewood.
Today I'm just enjoying the moment, and believing things can get better.

Steve Kean dramatically resigned at 5.30 pm on Friday.
But with all things Kean it was not so simple as it seems.
Whilst all sports channels both TV and radio had pundits, personality’s and former players all queuing up to express their sympathy for Kean and the treatment he has had to endure these past weeks, the true picture is much different.
In a meeting earlier on Friday with chief executive Derek Shaw and Director Paul Agnew, Kean had expressed his determination to carry on regardless. Despite the damage his continued presence was doing to the club and more important the attendances, Kean had every intention of riding out the storm with the full backing of Shaw and Agnew, and had hoped to oust his arch enemy Shebby Singh.
Kean knew that Singh himself was getting frustrated and disillusioned in his efforts to remove Kean and bring in a new manager. With the Rao family continually stalling and being indecisive (so what’s new) Singh was considering his position.
However Kean’s position changed in mid-afternoon after allegedly taking a phone call from his agent Jerome (the man who ruined Blackburn Rovers) Anderson and his legal team.
Kean was advised to resign, saying his position was “untenable” and poignantly added that he could not say any more “for legal reasons”.
Those reasons, I can reveal, are that Kean is to sue the Venky Company and the Rao family for constructive dismissal and squeeze every penny that he can from them.
Mrs Anuradha Desai is about to see Kean in his true colours. She is going to learn about Kean what we all know, and that is that Kean is a very devious man.
Mrs Desai has issued a statement saying “she is disappointed with Kean’s action”. She is going to get a lot more disappointed as Kean plans to plunder the family fortune. And he will succeed.
The evidence of this last week is stacked in favour of Kean as the situation could not have been more badly handled by the Venky’s.
The solution was quite simple but Mrs Desai refused to grasp it. She should have sacked Kean and pay up his contract. Venky’s had every justification to do so, his record is appalling, the worst Blackburn manager ever and lost half the fans (Venky’s customers) from the club.
No arguments, no legal action for wrongful dismissal, a straight forward uncomplicated procedure. Kean would not have had a case or reason to complain.
But no, Venky’s huffed and puffed particularly Mrs Desai and played into Kean and Anderson’s hands. It will cost her a fortune, serves her right, but it will impact on Rovers financial stability. I have warned Mrs Desai on several occasions that Kean would ‘bite the hand that fed him’, but she has ignored all advice from everyone.
In one National newspaper today Kean talks of being “stabbed in the back”. That’s rich coming from Kean, if he wants to talk about being stabbed in the back, give Sam Allardyce a call and ask him what it’s like.
Mrs Anuradha Desai has ‘egg on her face’ big time. She has given Kean wealth beyond his wildest dreams. Kean, a ‘jobbing coach’, hit the jackpot at the Rovers. Never could he have envisaged earning the salary he has been paid as an imposter at the Rovers, a reported £1.3 million per annum.
Now he is going to ‘bite the hand that fed him’.
Mrs Desai, you have been stitched up! As I have repeatedly warned you Kean would.
And now Kean is going to squeeze you dry.
ENJOY.
Reg.
Footnote:
May I respectfully suggest to Mrs Desai that she has no more dealings with Jerome Anderson and his agency and listens more to her brothers Ventkatesh and Balaji but more so Shebby Singh, who in a short space of time has picked up on the mood of the supporters, something she has never done. It would not be a bad idea to take more note of Andy Cryer in the Lancashire Telegraph and Reg of course!!

1 - Kean and his wife Margaret smearing themselves in marmite after 12 pints and dancing round their living room laughing the f*ucking heads off that he got a £1.3m contract. EVERY NIGHT
2 - Kean waking up smeared in marmite and sh*it, laughing his f*ucking head off, getting showered and going in to work to set up a few cones and tell some massive bullsh*its.
3 - Every press conference where the the sick twisted bald alkie lied through his teeth with a smirk as he laughed at your expense
LOWS - getting tin tacked but it wouldn't surprise me if he sued for constructive dismissal, leading to a new high and more marmite and Special Brew

Then we can get Alan Shearer as manager. He'd be good.
We should also keep Colin Hendry on because he won the League with Shearer.
Hendry would be especially good for getting the beers in and getting smashed out of his head, tanked up on 9% lager and being so sh1t faced he loses all his money and then bullies his elderly neighbours into handing over their life savings.
EVERY club needs a total degenerate alcoholic f*uck like Hendry.

I think this epitomises SK's Ewood tenure.
How many teams would take 4 points from 6 at Old Trafford and Anfield in consecutive games over the hectic Xmas period? These are two traditional fortresses of English football. SK wanted to make Ewood a fortress too but circumstances made that impossible. Arsenal, Norwich and Swansea home go with the aforementioned two away games as my top 5 highs.

Finally I find a bit of sense on this site. Is there something in the water in Blackburn?
If there is then I'm sure that would be Kean's fault too along with the town's crippling poverty and stubbornly high long term unemployment rate.
Whilst Shebby would make a good interim manager and Shearer and Hendry would fit in well in the medium term, I think Simon Garner is the one man that could reunite this broken club.
