Kean to be cautious over Gomes

STEVE Kean will continue to take a cautious approach with Nuno Gomes as he attempts to get the best out of the 36-year-old this season.

The Portuguese striker came off the bench to score the winner in Tuesday’s 2-1 triumph over Barnsley after being rested from the starting line-up.

It was the fourth consecutive league game in which Gomes had found the net and Kean believes he will benefit from the occasional rest in a 46-game Championship season.

The Rovers boss said: “I said to him before the game, ‘It’s going to be difficult for you with the intensity’.

“The game on Saturday against Bristol City was one of the highest in the Championship when you look at all the fitness stats.

“Some of our lads were producing personal bests for distance covered. Morten Pedersen I think was the most in seven years because the intensity of the game was so high.

“I think with Nuno we’ve got to protect him, take him out at certain times and maybe bring him on as a sub, start him in other games and near the end take him off.

“I would like to think that he can have an impact in every game, be it from the start or off the bench.

“We just have to be careful, not only with him, it will be the same with Danny Murphy at times and Dickson Etuhu.”

Rovers had hoped to have another option up front in the next few matches but Kean admits Colin Kazim-Richards, who started the season with two goals in two games, may now not return until the trip to Derby on October 20 following a setback in his recovery from a knee injury.

“He had a bit of a twinge in his knee and I think it will probably be after the next international break when we see him,” Kean said.

But Kean was eager to thank the fans for their patience on Tuesday, when Rovers fell behind before recovering to win.

“It would have been easy to get on our backs because we were that poor in the first half, but they stayed with us,” he said.

“The fans have been fantastic here and they’ve been sensational on the road.”

Of course the fans have been sensational on the road, they have had so much to put up with. They are the backbone of the Rovers' a lot of them will be boycotters at Ewood only going to support their team away from home.
The fans at Ewood on the other hand are described as "fantastic". I would rather describe them as delusional. Thinking they are helping the team they make Kean think he is getting it right. Well he isn't! It is the team, despite Kean that is getting it right. They are doing a fantastic job under extreme conditions. Just think what they would be like with a proper setup. Ok they are top of the league so couldn't be any higher. But that is because of the failings of the opposition, not any tactical awareness of Kean.

The only problem with playing your best team every week is that once you start picking up injuries you then have to field players who are not match fit and then take a few games to bed in. The big advantage that Rovers will have over other teams this season is the size of the squad and 46 games is a long season. You'll see that some of the other teams will inevitably tail off once they start picking up injuries and don't have sufficient quality players to replace them with.

Nuno is pure class....Form is temporary but class is permanent and age may diminish the strength in the legs but not the strength in the heart or the knowledge in the head. Nuno Gomes may be as revered as Tugay by the fans by the time he finishes his career at the Rovers. He really is that good and is one of the main reasons we will be promoted this season. That and Rhodes goals of course. Plus we still have KR and Best (two of the best forwards in this division for sure) to come back after injury. Just need one more big break OOO (Odious One Out) and the season looks good.

Trouble is if he had ten centre forwards he would still only play one up front.

I went to the match on Tuesday and bought a sausage roll and a Wispa at £2.90, you must really dislike me for being such a 'delusional' 'Kean luvvie'.

As for me & my 6 mates (who have all had season tickets for 20+ years), we will not be returning to Ewood till Kean has gone end of!

Just like to say that i've been to 2 of the 3 away games and still support rovers to win every game, home and away, i just will not be supporting Kean and the Venky's back pockets.

I fancy they will make extra effort to avoid showing the banks of empty seats - as will the club.

Agreed but CKR is dreadful! If he hadnt scored in the Hull game we would all be saying "never let him on the pitch again" because every other move apart from the poke in was terrible.

A Darener says...

Can't wait to get back from the cinema tomorrow, settle down in front of my tv, can in hand and watch the Rovers on Sky. Only a mile from Ewood. Would I rather be there? You bet. But as one of the stay aways I will still enjoy a game of football. I won't have to put up with the sight of Kean pacing the touch line , looking like he owns the place. I will sympathise with the Spartans as they have to endure Kean's tactics in person but I will still wish for a good result.

To a point you are correct . Victor Meldrew has got nothing on me, I could moan for England. But in this particular situation ie Kean, I am up there with the best moaners in England. Don't you think we have something to moan about? For tens of years I followed the Rovers. Down at the bottom of leagues up at the top of leagues. Sometimes it was better at the bottom than at he top. I am not a glory hunter. It doesn't matter which league we are in. What does matter is the football we play, the reputation of the club and the personnel involved behind the scenes. Over the last two years we have seen the Rovers good name dragged through the mud by a simpleton with no right to call himself a football manager. Even Paul Ince and Brian Kidd had more in them than Kean.

I'm so tired of being called for going and supporting OUR BLACKBURN ROVERS! Us fans are in this together, we've all been through the mill and yes it hurts bigtime. But just because I have chosen to buy a season ticket does not mean I am supporting Kean. And just because you have chosen to stay away does NOT mean you hate Kean any more than we do - does not make you any more of a fan - I am confident every single fan who steps foot in Ewood wants rid of the clowns who are running our club.
