Steve Kean hits back at Hill spending claims as Rovers beat Barnsley to stay top

GET IN Jordan Rhodes celebrates his goal last night - but the former Huddersfield man’s fee upset Barnsley boss Keith Hill
STEVE Kean last night hit back at claims by Barnsley boss Keith Hill that Blackburn have an unfair financial advantage – after £8m man Jordan Rhodes netted in a 2-1 home win.
Jacob Mellis put the visitors ahead but Rhodes’ goal on the stroke of half time salvaged a poor first half performance.
Nuno Gomes then came off the bench to score the winner five minutes from time and keep Rovers top of the Championship.
Former Rovers player Hill hit out at his old club, saying: “The game was won by £8m, which is a lot more than my budget. It’s as angry as I’ve felt about a game.
“You pay a Jordan Rhodes type of transfer fee for clinical decision making and that’s the difference between the two sides.
“We cannot compete, it’s an unfair advantage that Blackburn get, parachute money or solidarity money, that’s a great way of disguising it, they get rewarded for getting relegated.
“It’s a modern day footballing tragedy. It’s the shirts wanting the strong to get stronger and trying to create a Premier League Two.
“How can you get rewarded for getting relegated? Does it happen in any other country?”
But Kean said: “I disagree with that because last year we were in a position where there were a lot of players leaving the club.
“We got ourselves into a financial position as a club where we were more stable and that’s every club’s prerogative to cut their cloth accordingly.
“We’re in a different division but we’re able to use the money that over the years we’ve earned by staying in the Premier League so long.
“It’s easy to take that parachute money and not spend it but we decided to reinvest back into the club and bought a very expensive player but in Jordan Rhodes that will prove to be a very astute purchase.
“If he scores the amount of goals he’s on course to score at the moment, he’ll be worth a lot more than we paid for him.
“We’re trying to bounce back at the first time of asking because the prize money this year with the new TV deal is so lucrative.
“We’re deciding to have a real go at it and that’s our prerogative.”
About the performance, he said: “I must be honest, I thought first half we were dreadful.
“I suppose at times like that you are looking for special players to produce something to get you back into the game and that’s what Jordan did.
“In the second half we responded much better, I don’t think we could have been much worse to be honest.
“Both substitutes made a good impact, a fantastic early cross from Fabio Nunes and Nuno as we know from his career can ghost into positions.
“I think we really needed our key players to produce at key times in the game.”

Last night it was dreadful.
The defence is shocking. I have a 5 year old boy that would not make the mistakes that were being made last night.
However, as I have said all along I think we will get promoted because of the amount of goals we can score
Anyone know what Hendry is coaching our defence?
At least we are still top. Bring on Boro and hopefully a clean sheet.

Kean confirms parachute payments paid for down payment on Rhodes etc not Mrs D investing her fortune in the club as we are led to believe - so come on Kean get your mother to dig a bit deeper and invest in some defensive players we urgently need them the likes of Dann not good enough even for the Championship and as for Hendry's coaching skills - what can I say more goals against then teams in mid table - a disaster!!

we lost good players like Rayn Nelson, Keith andraws, Samba,Hollite,Yakubu
,Zonzi,Salgado, Jackson Roberts few more players leave the club. So it is a natural process to get new players with the current trent in the transfer market. Kean did the best to arrange 12 players within the budget, Yes Rhodes is a special player, We pay the price for a legend(means never look the price tag), he is young and it an investment for the club and new generation foodball fans. I love every match to watch - Rhodes and Gomes. they are very passionate players in the team - One focus - get a goal for the team. They are doing good too. So Barnsley boss Keith Hill can accept the truth and agree "Blackburn is great club to be in top fight".

Yes he never did a good job last season infact he should have been sacked at christmas but he wasnt. He stuck at his job ignored the abuse and built a new team to get us back. At the moment he is doing the best anyone could do - so give the man a break. If you are a true rovers fan you will get behind the team whoever the manager is. And remember half of the players who got us relegated last season are still there but you are not telling them to leave - remember Hendry helped us win the premier league (probably one of the reasons why some of our fans support us) - he is a legend. SO GET BEHIND ROVERS OR SHUT UP
What do you want us to start losing so kean can be sacked ! Whos ays anyone else could do a better job

Don't blink now, keep the boycott going. I have a stong feeling that they are beginning to get the message and that Kean will be replaced. I don't believe he will be sacked, just "moved" and that will be good enough for me and thousands others to return I'm sure. Then we can all unite behind the players and manager and get back to the Prem which is surely what we all want.

Relegated - Yes, because we lost lots of quality players in the mid of the last league season. Now rebuild and getback to " where we are ". For this rebuilding a team in the current transfer market means - it is a fresh start, as a club we are happy to invest in some good players like Rhodes,Best,Murphy,E
ntuhu,Gomes,Kazim. all these players are top performer. we need to pay the price to stand top of the table.
Kean is the Manager of the month, he is getting full support from Fans, venky and players. Good Luck to Blackburn.

Those of you who regard yourselves as "true fans" by turning up at Ewood I kind of understand, but the totally odious turncoats & Kean apologists now asking us to give him a chance can go to hell.
What you represent is the man who`s family barbecue is gatecrashed by the neighbourhood nasty (Kean) and his crony mates. They have sex with your wife, mollest your daughters, relieve themselves on the cat and sh-t in your favorite armchair watching your telly with your remote control, stub out fags on your DVD`s. Then as they leave, they phone the police to complain about the noise at the party and that they are concerned about their safety.
The police heed their complaints and warn you as to your future conduct.
Several months later you go down the local for a drink and bump into the nasty neighbour, being the "Wuss" that you are, you don`t confront him because that would need courage and conviction, you don`t even boycott the pub until he is no longer drinking there. Instead you let him buy you a pint, you listen as he explains it was all a big misunderstanding and from now he will change, after all it was he that was the victim, ask his social worker.
After a few more pints and a game of pool, you leave the pub singing to the night with him, come around anytime "Stevie" you can screw the wife anytime you like mate, infact bring your mates around too, I have daughters.
After all, We are top of the League and that makes the past go away. "NOT"

May I remind Mr Kean (and Venkys)Mrs Desai said there were no financial issues when they took over the club; so when did we become unstable, Stevie?
It's just another dig at Venkys predecessors. They, through Kean have done it before - anyone remember Kean blaming the previous administration for us becoming a "selling" club?
"......the high wage bill in place from the Walker Trust’s days had turned the club into a ‘selling one’ and it was something they (Venkys) were left with sorting out.
“For the last 10 years it has always been around that mark. What we’ve been as a club over the past 10 years is a club that has to sell.
“When your wages are so high as a percentage of turnover you have to be a selling club. And if you look back over the last 10 years we are the club that has sold the most. We have tried to balance the books by continually selling players".
Venkys used it as their pathetic defence for them cutting staff and not playing / getting rid of experienced players. Too f@cking arrogant to accept blame for anything. And why is the team manager giving a financial assessment of the business?
He conveniently didn't mention depite being a selling club with a high percentage wage bill we had comfortably stayed in the PL for eight and a half years - its called good management - both the business and the team.
We escaped relegation on the last day of his first part season in charge thanks to the points we already had on the board and got relegated in his first full one thereby losing a shed load of TV money in the process.
Thank God they sorted that one out.
Losing under £2m one year to over £18m the next. We hadn't lost that much in the previous nine years in total. If there were no problems when they took over, how did that happen in less than ten months?
When was the bank ever threatening foreclosure in the previous nine years? (see Paul Hunt's leaked e-mail)
Their accusations have been close to libellous and I am surprised John Williams et al haven't commented.
We became financially unstable because of Venkys, no-one else.
I hate these people more by the minute.

In reality, without the parachute money relegation would lead to financial ruin of those clubs.
The drop in TV income whilst costs - player contracts mainly - remain at a high level would make it impossible for most clubs to survive. The PL has an obligation not to allow that to happen.
The parachute money gives those clubs the time to cut their cloth accordingly. Do they invest it and try and get back the higher level of income or use the three years getting rid of the high earners by selling them or letting their contracts run out thereby reducing costs to within manageable levels?
It's a choice the clubs have to make.
It's harsh on those which don't have that option and have to start from scratch. But is it worse than clubs which have achieved promotion (parachute money or not) then being allowed to go out of business just by being relegated?

Whatever we think, the summer acquisitions are good signings in the main. There's a lot of talk about defence and defenders, but if you look at it, by the end of last season, we had no strikers (Yakubu gone and Goodwillie, well, being Goodwillie), so we absolutely needed strikers: and you need 3 or 4 to cover injuries. Case in point, we have two strikers out right now. Defensively, we have Orr, Olsson, Olsson, Givet, Dann, Hanley, Lowe and I'm sure someone like Etuhu could play at the back too, plus the youngsters, which means we don't need defenders (you may want to buy better quality ones, but they aren't a necessity in the same way as strikers were). The problem for me is not the defence per se, it's the lack of ability of the midfield and forwards to defend that means that the defenders are hopelessly exposed and over-stretched, resulting in mistakes. People hark back to the Premier League winning side, they defended from Shearer through Atkins and Sherwood, Wilcox and Ripley, to the back four - we don't do that now and we need to learn to.
That said, with Rhodes and Gomes up front, I think we're going to think we can outscore anyone to be honest.
Only my opinion, don't ask anyone else to agree with it.

We wont get promoted unless he brings in replacements as that match highlighted a lot of problems which were covered up by the fanastic Rhodes and Nuno Gomes. Murphy was poor and slow in the first half and was guilty of miss passes Pederson was awful but we are used to that and Orr kept holding his ribs rather than progressing forward and was another useless defender,Ollson had a good game and tried to attack on the left but we did not have any right sided attack at all so the side is also tactically imbalanced.

The only way I could cope was to pretend that I could not see kean at all.
The atmosphere was dreadful despite the win and the excitement of seeing the wonderful Rhodes play.
What the tactics were I have no idea. Casually giving the ball away in defence, failing to press the opposition and a lack of trying to find space ( apart from Rhodes and Gomes when he came on ) can mainly be blamed on inept coaching and management.
I was on two of the first three protest marches and attended the first three post match protests as I had concluded the only chance of avoiding relegation was to get the idiot out. I still believe that this was the case.
HOWEVER the mass boycott is now threatening to damage us as much as bonehead is. The longer it goes on, the fewer will ever step foot in Ewood again, nevermind be regulars. We will not change things by staying away - our owners are deluded fools who are beyond reason.
All we can hope is that when kean goes we are as high up the league as possible and that our crowds are as large as possible.
At the end of the season I hope the manager out campaign is relaunched as actively as possible whichever division we are in - hopefully after a promoti

The boycotters who have stayed away and believe that having an empty stadium will eventually see the end of this pr!ck, and us supporters who have purchased STs believing we have seen worse and support the club and not the manager, all need to understand this :
Us supporters with STs believe 'staying away' is **** and you must support your team.
However, ST holders will stay away, not for any boycotting purposes but for the dire entertainment that is being dished up!
Last night was dreadful and the tactics where 'ball-less'.
Fans didn't like BFS tactics and some stayed away, well, top of the league or not, I cannot watch that sh!te that was served up, yet again last night.
This will be one reason why the attendances will keep falling and ewood will be empty. The atmosphere is none existent because the football is giving us nothing to shout about and with this tactless moron in charge it will not get any better!
Go on or stay away - I don't really care, you'll regret either decision you make....Good luck!

It's all about opinions, mine differ from yours obviously, no I don't want to see the team struggle that will automatically happen (eventually) with this clown in charge, for me it's not about winning football matches any more, it's about the way the club is going which leads me back to who they are currently employing.
You like me remember CH as a good footballer who would put his head where others dare not. Since then his personal life has taken some bad Knocks which like many I felt sorry for but it's since then he has shown his true colours and if those pensioners where your mum and dad you may think different.
As for Kean Drunk driver, liar, awful manager, due to drag the club into the mud again with the slander case when lets face it he was of his head when he spoke and this was an official club trip.
No it's not about winning or losing its about the history of our club BRFC and history will show how we went downhill in the last two years.

What right have we to do that?
I'll tell you why, because even in our position we still have a lot of kudos, where people want to get involved and invest money.
Who wants to get involved and INVEST in Barnsley, Burnley, Blackpool or any of the other tinpot clubs in this division?
NOBODY, cos they ain't worth a w4nk.

On another note I really do wish the stay aways would come back, they're hardly likely to sack the monkey if we are top of the league. So it looks like we are stuck with him. The only ones losing out are the fans. If he manages to get us back up he will get sacked from the PL anyway as he still can't organise a team.

Got to agree with your comments about Murphy too, he's been awful. I lost track last night of how many times he gave the ball away and then just strolled back to help the defence. Not sure what Kean sees in him at the moment, surely Dunny has to be a contender to come back into the fold on Friday.

I believe Kean should have been sacked last year and he is very clearly a very very poor manager out of his depth even at this level.
I can understand why people refuse to go to Ewood and I can understand why others continue to go.
What about if all fans unite and agree to fill the ground at ONE up and coming home fixture, imagine if we can get 30,000 fans to support the team. WHAT WILL THAT SAY TO VENKYS
Remove Kean and we will come, an extra 17,000 fans for one home game. Even Venkys cannot turn that much revenue down. The boycotting fans can continue their boycott after this one game and the crowd will go back to 13,000.
This could be a massive PR stunt for the fans and another way to show the media that fans are willing and ready to return to Ewood when Kean is gone.

Yes, it is slightly disappointing to witness such a low attendance but to all the armchair whingers I would say this:
I would rather have 13,000 loyal committed supporters than another 5,000 Premiership-Only pretenders. The atmosphere in the ground is much better and is undoubtedly a contributing factor to the results and performances that will take back to the Premiership, with its untold riches next season so please continue to support the club in the best way you know how, by staying away.
If you really think that your futile protest is hurting the club then you really are commercially naiive. Annual lost revenue from 5,000 season tickets is roughly equivalent to David Dunn's wages so we need not look too far to see how the club might scrape by without you.
Enjoy your Friday night in front of the telly...............

Apart from my ST I also paid the club for parking and always spent a reasonable amount on beverages and merchandise. On some occasions I have entertained clients in the hospitality suite. Multiply that and the loss of sponsors, corporate entertainment and advertising revenue and it will add up to a substantial amount of money.
Having said all that I think the owners and directors will also be extremely concerned about the lack of atmosphere in the stadium, long term it will have a detremental effect.

If we keep playing like we did last night then the results surely have to dry up when we play the better sides in this division. I think Pederson must have some incriminating photos of Kean, because how someone who gives the ball to the oppostion so much(and I mean last season too!) can be an almost ever present is beyond me! We were/are crying out for some pace on the flanks and hopefully Kean will give Nunes a start on the left on Friday. Etuhu and Murphy appear to both want to play the holding role (ie. stand still most of the night and pass backwards or square at a push). We need someone to drive forward.
And the whole defence looked vulnerable most of the night. To have barely 30% of posession isn't a good sign for future games no matter how much the 'goals win games' brigade keep saying.
Also a word on the 'atmosphere'- at times it was like watching a reserve game and I found myself staring at the Blackburn End in disbelief at how deflated it seemed for the majority of the 90 mins. The number of empty seats is embarrasing, God knows how full the ground will be on Friday.
Not all bad though, I thought Rhodes was excellent all night which was no mean feat given the supply he got.And....I suppose top of the league after 6 games is a great start but why does it feel so hollow??!!

ff, these are more likely to bring a decent following and improve the attendance compared to the likes of Barnsley and lesser supported clubs. Not sure that the home support will be increased Saturdays or midweek. If you really want a change of the bungling manager, ask yourself, what are you doing to influence the owners to remove him?. If you are doing nothing, then you must be happy with Kean. In which case any anti Kean views you express become irrelevant otherwise you would at least come up with an alternative to the boycott.

The stay-aways are only hurting themselves by not watching a winning team while they can. I see many posts saying that the team is only just scraping wins and that it wont last.....perhaps hoping that is right justifies them not going or at least makes not going more easy for them if we lose some games. But we should remeber we are Blackburn Rovers and Barcelona. We will take any win in any fashion, points make prizes. We should not forget that we got relegated last season because we were a very poor side and had a rubbish manager. Well half that team is still playing this season and we still have a rubbish manager - BUT - the players that have come in are still settling into the side yet we are getting the right results.
I think that yes we may well lose one or two games along the way (we are not Barca remember) but overall we will only get better as the season goes on.
I know your decision was difficult Peter - as it will be for a lot of the folks on here - but we need your kids and others to get down and support the team. The kids are our future fan base for the 'post' Kean and Venkys days to come. Taking them down when we are top of the table and winning is excellent stuff. Well done sir.

Mr. French, I cannot help noticing how you and a few others evince the idea of winning ugly. And yet you and others were at the forefront of the anti Big Sam brigade when we were winning ugly in the Premiership and not a division below.
Please explain.
Well I have to admit you are perfectly correct on this, I was vocal against the type of football BFS played and to be fair I was not a lone voice! But also to be fair the Rovers team that BFS had at his disposal for a couple of seasons was a far better side than the one we have now. With a much better defense. The times now are desperate times and we are (as you point out) in a division below the prem now - so desperate times need desperate measures and the only way we can get back to the prem is by winning matches and picking up points - so right now a win is a win a win whether it is ugly or beautiful. I really do think that the winning style will improve (after a few hiccups on the way) and we will see better looking wins later in the season. Till then "Ugly" is fine by me (a bit like saturday nights at the Mecca at 2am when you still hadn't got a girl to go home with!) Sorry that is very un PC I know.... :)
