Blues off the Boyle and Colne exit Vase
1:10pm Monday 17th September 2012 in Sport
NELSON’S FA Vase exploits are over after losing out in a five-goal thriller – with all five goals coming in the first half.
The Blues got off to the perfect start in the second round qualifier at Victory Park with Danny Boyle scoring twice within the opening 13 minutes.
But three goals in the space of seven minutes before the break saw Wigan Robin Park book their place in the next round.
However, it appeared it would be Nelson – eighth in NWCL Division One – who would progress against a side a division higher thanks to Boyle’s brace.
He struck as early as the sixth minute and again in the 13th to put Nelson well in charge.
But the tie was turned on its head in the closing stages of the half.
Two goals in as many minute minutes by Andrew Neacy (32) and Phil Howard (34) levelled matters before Robert Hanley scored what turned out to be the winner in the 37th minute.
Colne’s hopes of progressing in the tournament are also over after losing 2-1 at home to Bottesford Town of Northern Counties East League Division One.
Like near neighbours Nelson, Nigel Coates’ side got off to a flying start when the prolific Paul Fildes – who is now also a coach at Colne – opened the scoring with a goal in the fifth minute.
But Bottesford went in level when Danny Boulton equalised in the 27th minute before the visitors netted a winner early in the secon half through Marc La Rocca.
