Eddie Howe: I’ve no need to delve into loan market

EDDIE Howe is not looking to the loan market after admitting: “I’ll back the squad I've got!”

The Clarets boss was linked with a move for Sunderland striker Connor Wickham after the window re-opened.

But after adding winger Cameron Stewart from Hull City on a three-month transfer deadline day deal, welcoming Martin Paterson back from a hamstring injury in the last game against Brighton and with Danny Ings recovering well from knee surgery, he plans to stick with what he's got.

“It (the loan window) is an option to us. But I’d say at the moment if everybody's fit and healthy I won’t be delving into the loan market,” said Howe, ahead of tomorrow’s visit to Turf Moor of Peterborough United.

“I’ll back the squad I’ve got.

“I think it's strong enough, I think it’s good enough.

“If we get any injuries from here on in then we'll probably look to move on someone, but I've got to have faith in my squad.”

Of the links to Wickham, he added: “He’s a player we admire, definitely. But we've got good players here.

“Unless we need to fill a place I won’t be looking to bring someone in.”

In the meantime, Howe believes his players have what it takes to turn their season around, after following up an opening day win over Bolton Wanderers with three straight league defeats.

And he praised the work they have done on the training ground over the international break to prepare for facing Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough United.

“The lads in this little break we've had in terms of games have trained really well, the intensity levels we've trained at have been excellent so from that perspective I'm really pleased, and now I'm just looking for that to come out in the game,” said Howe.

“The attitude to the game, tempo, intensity – all those things that go together to make a good home performance we probably lacked against Brighton and we certainly want to put that right.

“I've said before, to get our fans with us we need to show them we're going to work hard from the first minute to the last and we're not going to fall down on hard work and attitude – things that we can directly influence.

“Added to that I think we've got enough quality to win the game, so hopefully the crowd will see a positive reaction.”

Posh have yet to pick up a point this season, which Howe admits could make for an even tougher contest, but added: “I'm certainly expecting a performance from the players. I'm certainly expecting a positive reaction from us.

“One win and everything looks different, and I think that's what we've got to focus on.

“If we're on top of our game I'll back us to beat anybody. We showed that against Bolton where we were on top of our game and we were excellent. We've got to try to hit those levels again.”
