Rugby: Blackburn lose first game of the season

Blackburn lost their first game of the season following a disappointing 17-0 defeat at Aldwinians.

Throughout the game Blackburn struggled to retain possession, making it hard to build any real sustained pressure and this resulted in few scoring opportunities.

Aldwinians started brightly and scored the first of their two tries after just six minutes – and this came after they had missed a second minute 35m penalty.

The home side’s fly half found a gap too easily and broke into the Blackburn 22, the ball went through a couple of pairs of hands before crossing the line to touch down.

The extras were added and Aldwinians were 7-0 up. The home side kept the pressure up on Blackburn, who rarely got out of their own half. And on the half hour mark, Aldwinians added three points to their tally after a successfully penalty kick.

The second half was better for Blackburn who enjoyed their best period of the game in the early exchanges.

But, crucially, after some early pressure in the Aldwinians 22, they were unable to turn the pressure into points.

And as the half went on the home side regained control and sealed the win after their second try on 75 minutes, again the kick was successful to give the home side a 17-0 win.

Head coach, Dino Radice, said: “I am very disappointed, we did not front up in the forwards and when we did get the ball in the backs we didn’t manage to control the game.”

Blackburn will hope for a better performance on Saturday, as they face Workington at Ramsgreave Drive.
