Berg 'concerned' at Blackburn Rovers' recruitment policy
10:14am Thursday 6th September 2012 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
HENNING Berg has expressed his “surprise” and “concern” at Blackburn Rovers ’ recruitment policy after manager Steve Kean admitted he had not seen any of his deadline day signings play ‘live’.
Portuguese duo Nuno Henrique and Diogo Rosado arrived with Polish international goalkeeper Grzegorz Sandomierski at Ewood Park on Friday, but Kean yesterday revealed the trio were not his targets.
The Rovers boss admitted all three had been strongly recommended by global adviser Shebby Singh and that he would work closely with them in the next few weeks in an attempt to get them ready for Championship football.
Kean also suggested the majority of Rovers’ other five Portuguese signings were Singh’s idea, after saying he brought the likes of Danny Murphy, Dickson Etuhu and Jordan Rhodes in to hit the ground running.
Former Rovers defender Berg, who won the Premier League title with them in 1995, has worked with ‘sporting directors’ during his management career in Norway but insisted the boss should always have the final say.
Berg said: “I have worked with sporting directors before but it was always the coach who would have the final say on signings. Every player who comes into the club should be the coach’s decision.
“I am very, very surprised that Steve Kean is not in charge of bringing all the signings in. It is very strange and not advisable. You have to question why he has said it now, at the end of the window.
“Maybe he wanted players that he wasn’t allowed to sign? I don’t know. A manager would never want to be in the position he has described though, because you wonder about how much control they have.
“If it has been like this for a long time, then he should have said it earlier. “The problem is if they are not his signings and they don’t play then they are a waste of money. Clubs can’t afford to waste money.”
Rovers fans have questioned the signing of six Portuguese players this summer, with Nuno Gomes, Paulo Jorge, Fabio Nunes and Edinho also brought to the club this summer.
Only Gomes has been a regular so far this campaign with Kean suggesting the others will need time to adapt to the pace of the league.
Kean said: “We would like to think they are in the club just now and we can take a real look at them. “I have not seen them play live. Shebby was very excited about them coming and was telling me how good they were.
“So we have now got them in the club and we would like to think we can improve any player who comes to the club and also integrate them as quickly as possible.
“I have not seen them. Shebby went to see Nuno Henrique play for Academica the Friday before we played Leicester and told me he played very well.
“The reports we do have for Greg are good but I have not seen him myself. “We like to think that any player who comes we can improve, with the technical training . “Bobby Mimms was impressed with Greg while Nuno is meant to have good pace, good defending ability and be good on the ball, so let’s see.
“Shebby Singh has identified these players. These players have been identified by Shebby, he has been very excited about the technical ability of these players. You can’t have too many good players.
“We have got them at the club and I would like to work with them intensely over the next couple of weeks to try and integrate them as quickly as possible, because we know how difficult it is.
“The other foreign lads that have come in, we just need to try and push them as quickly as possible. “I know the intensity is very different to how it is abroad. I know it will hit them right between the eyes.
“If they show they can compete they will get thrown in but if it looks as though it is going to be too much for them, we will protect them.”

As for not seeing them live , not sure what thats got to do with anything. I for one often see incident on the TV that if i was at the ground I would never see. Modern technology allows coaches and managers to observe players match performance from lots of different angles and perspectives, do i need to travel for 2 days to watch a player for 90 mins in the back of beyond , or would i be better watching 5 of his games via the internet or DVD in the sametime to get a better feel for them.
I think Mr Berg managers may have given you the impression in the past that the players brought in were their decision, but in reality its a board decision in a lot of clubs.
What concerns me here is the timing of this and the poor man management from Mr Kean here, how are these players meant to feel when he openly states " I did not want you" before they have even kicked a ball.
To be honest it says more about Mr Kean tah shebby ( A trier but clearly mad as a box of frogs) thinks he has a better idea about players. On the evidence of this years signings compared to last years hes not wrong.

Berg will not have been paid for his comments. Managers and ex-managers like to keep their name in view and are given to offering their unsolicited views to this end.
The power balance is shifting away from Kean and his comments may well be aimed at garnering support from fellow managers who in the past have been ridiculous enough to express their 'admiration' of his 'dignity' and their sympathy for his 'plight'.
As RR RR comments there is going to be un moment critique in the near future and it will be very interesting to see how the land lies when the dust settles.

Kean is very noticeable for his poor timing, man management and loose talk that undermines his own players. The signs of someone who is only concerned about himself. Managing Rovers is an ego trip for shareholder Kean. KEAN OUT!
One more thing, do scouts get a wage? Have all the scouts been sacked to save on the wage bill?

Shebby goes out there and picks up a free former Portuguese international to add experience to striker force (one of our best signings in my opinion). Along with a host of other unknown young players for next to nothing and each one with good reason:
- Rosado - Free, apparantly wanted by liverpool and chelsea at points in time, Dunny has lost his legs so we could do with a replacement.
- Nunes - "nominal" - actually looks pretty good.
- Henrique - "nominal" - Keano wasn't going to sign a defensive player was he.
- Jorge, edinho, greg the goalie on loans and "nominal" fees.
I don't understand what he's whinging about, he got to make the main signings for the squad whilst Shebby generally brought in youngsters and loans for less than £1mil total.
NB. I also noticed the media going on about how we "splashed the cash" this summer, didn't we sell N'zonzi and Yakubu for about £5mil combined and expect to recieve somewhere between £4-6mil for Hoilett. By my Reckoning we have spent a maximum of £15mil (though we only paid £4mil of Rhodes up front so reduce that down to £11mil). Meaning..... oh wait we will break even this summer and expect £4mil to be syphoned off in the future to pay off the Rhodes debt. Not to mention the £12mil vanishing from Samba outside of a transfer window.

One thing that worries me is that shebby likes to dabble in management and might think he could do Keans job.

NO WAY, I'm glad this moron isn't in charge of signings, has he had a successful one yet, mr Genius steve kean, footballing leg end.
Last night I remembered the con man who fooled Gareme souness, Ali Dia who said he was a senegalese international and fooled souness by ringing him up pretending he was Georgi Weah's cousin when in fact he was a lying chancer and Weah never even knew him. He actually played for 43 minutes in a premier league game.
Everyone knows the story, but that isn't the scary part. The scary part of the whole story was when I looked up Ali Dia the lying con man chancer up on Wikipedia, he actually played more games than Kean. Kean played less games than this con man at a professinal level. Has anyone actually asked his former clubs if they remember him? Or is he another Gordon con man Ramsay who never had the ability, ever, but relies on being a con man chancer?
SCARY STUFF.
Is Kean or has Kean ever been a professional footballer? Thats the question I would like andy cryer to ask his former clubs. Did they pay him or is he like that guy on the end of the Man U Champions league photo?

Reg Rover says...
Whilst relaxing at home last Thursday (30th August) I had Talk Sport radio switched on in the back ground.
Imagine my surprise when presenter Jason Cundy announced that their special guest that evening was to be none other than the Lancashire Telegraphs Andy Cryer to discuss all things Blackburn Rovers prompted by the day’s news that Jason Rhodes had signed for the Rovers at a fee of £8 million, a record between two Championship teams. Rovers barely merit a mention on this National Radio station let alone being the night’s main topic. So I eagerly awaited Cryer’s arrival with excited anticipation. Cryer didn’t disappoint.
With the programme heading towards midnight I presume most Rovers fans will have missed what Cryer (pic above) had to say, let me enlighten you.
Asked about the Jason Rhodes transfer and fee, which amazed presenter Crundy (a former Chelsea player) Cryer said he thought it was a “last throw of the dice by Mrs Anuradha Desai to save Kean his job and get Rovers back into the Premiership” , although Cryer went on to say he thought Kean (was not the man for that job and that a great opportunity was lost in May when Rovers should of made a change and started the season with a new man in charge creating a new impetus at Ewood. This had led to the fans deserting Ewood Park in their thousands”.
Presenter Jason Cundy suggested that the Rovers fans were ill advised to carry on their protest at Kean’s management and should now get behind him. Cryer retorted “not so, what you have to remember” said Cryer “is that no manager in football league history has survived in his job for so long with a such bad record as Kean. “ Rovers fans know he is not up to his job and now have deserted the club in droves.” With gates of barely 13,500 at both opening home games, down by almost 50% from the Allardyce era, even taking into consideration the loss of Premiership football, it is amazing”.
Cryer went on to point out to Cundy that Rovers fans were no different from anyone else. Giving Liverpool fans as an example when they wanted rid of Roy Hodgson. Their protest lasted no more than a week or two over a handful of games and then Hodgson was gone. “Rovers fans have been totally ignored and treated with contempt by Mrs Anuradha Desai and they have now had enough and will not return whilst Kean is at the club in his £1.3 million pound job, no matter what League position he obtains or what players he signs the damage is done” said Cryer.
Asked if he thought Kean’s Job was in danger Cryer Replied “it should be, for him to fail now after major capital investment in the team is unthinkable, (no less than 12 new players) Cryer went on to reveal that Rovers have at least 6, and possibly more players on £35,000 per week. Unheard off outside the Premiership and a massive wage bill” that Cryer does not think is sustainable without large attendances. The whole tone of Andy Cryer’s interview was anti-Kean and Venky’s, he sounded much more disillusioned speaking than he does in print.
Presenter Jason Cundy asked what Cryer considered to be the minimum expectation from the Rovers for Kean to keep his job. Cryer replied “a top two finish and never out of the top 6 at any stage of the season, anything less, given the backing he has received would be failure and Desai could not possibly continue to justify keeping Kean in employ”.
Jason Cundy ventured to say that Cryer came over more as a fan than a journalist. Andy Cryer then revealed that he comes from Bristol, and that Bristol City is his club. But he has grown to love Blackburn and it’s football team and now feels a part of it and wants the Rovers to rise again just as any fan does.
Andy Cryer, has obviously during the course of his job, worked closely with Steve Kean since Kean took over from Allardyce in December 2010. It is obvious that Cryer does not hold Kean in high regard (but we knew that already through his Lancashire Telegraph column) hearing him and the tone of his voice on live radio was however different and put a different complex on matters. Somewhere on the way the professional relationship between Cryer and Kean has broken down, but that is par for the course with Kean.
Finally presenter Cundy questioned why the Venky’s had not invested this type of money into the team when they were still in the Premiership? Cryer’s reply “it is a mystery, but I don’t think Kean is the right man to receive and handle this type of investment”.
AND SO SAY ALL OF US..

It's still a million quid though, and a million quid's worth of what ? Just because the Portugese Lidl had a three for two offer on promising young footballers from five years ago doesn't mean the Scheister had to fill his whole trolley with them.
Is this lemon masquerading as some kind of football guru asking us to believe he has unearthed a posse of superstars from under the noses of hundreds of scouts, managers and coaches with a zillion times more experience and knowledge than he will ever have? He's a TV celebrity for Gawd's sake, hired as a front man for this circus of an operation. He should not be within a million miles of this football club never mind influencing recruitment of players.
I'm beginning to wish dear old Hans Christian was back hiring and firing again. Oops, did I say hiring and firing, I meant helping us, honest HC.
We seem to have acquired the services of another inhabitant of his own little planet; one who thinks he can play PL Manager for real.
What's the point anyway if Kean doesn't use the Dirty Half Dozen, which is likely given his disclaimer or, more probably, they aren't actually up to much?
Perhaps Kean has now seen them since they arrived and decided they are rubbish, hence his admission he had not seen them before or, to put it another way, "Don't look at me, this is nowt to do with me".
Of course Kean thinking they are rubbish in no way makes them bad footballers.
Shambles, absolute shambles.
