Rovers get a triple boost
8:48am Tuesday 4th September 2012 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
BLACKBURN Rovers have been handed a triple injury tonic after fears of a defensive crisis were eased yesterday.
Rovers’ French ‘warrior’ Gael Givet, centre back partner Scott Dann and on-loan striker Colin Kazim-Richards are all expected to be in contention for the trip to Bristol City in a fortnight – with a timely international break set to allow them time to regain fitness.
It was initially feared Givet could be facing more than a month on the sidelines after having an injection to play through the pain barrier in Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Leeds.
Givet had x-rays on a ‘suspected fractured bone on his foot’ yesterday but results showed he had just suffered bruising and is being given every chance to be fit for the trip to Ashton Gate.
Dann limped out of the action at Elland Road with a hamstring complaint, with many again fearing the worst ahead of scans yesterday.
There was even talk of Rovers having to move quickly in the loan market next week to find some experienced defensive cover but scan results show Dann should be fit to return in 10 days.
Rovers are also hopeful they will be able to welcome Kazim-Richards back into the fray in the West Country, with the Turkish international having missed the last three games with a knee injury.
The former Sheffield United man, who is currently on a season-long loan at Ewood from Galatasaray, scored in Rovers’ opening two Championship games – before limping out of the win over Hull City with a knee injury.
Jordan Rhodes has since come in strengthen Rovers’ attacking option, for a Championship record £8million fee, with Kazim-Richards now also pushing for a recall to the starting line up.
His return will provide boss Steve Kean with a plethora of options, with him able to play out wide or up front, as Rovers look to maintain their unbeaten start at Bristol City, who have scored eight goals in their first two home games this season.
Meanwhile summer signing Diogo Rosado, one of six Portuguese captures, has recovered from a hamstring injury and has returned to full training .
The former Sporting Lisbon man will now be put through his paces on a pre-season training programme in a bid to get him ready for the Championship campaign.
Brazilian full back Bruno Ribeiro is also expected to be fit for Rovers’ next league involvement, despite playing the last 15 minutes at Leeds with a sprained ankle.

So now that they will probably be fit in a fortnight, let's not bother, eh Steve. After all, it's not like we're going to throw away leads and ship loads of goals, is it ? You tool.

As we have said before we should have invested in a couple of good defensive players instead of paying out over the odd's in wages etc for the likes of Murphy who has done nothing to impress so far!!

Aye, IMO if that is the truth of the matter, and I had no reason to disbelieve what was said considering where it arrived from ? Just a chance meeting on Langho train station with a guy ! Strange but true !
I know footballers lead a charmed life and all that, but surely when you have a problem such as our defending then extra sessions should be a priority in addressing that ?
That said, the league position quite possibly dictates all that occurs down at the mental institution - err, I mean Brockhall !

Dann + Givet are a decent pairing but Hanley is far from the finished article. I've never known a club rely on 2 CB's for a season, we WILL come up short sooner or later.
Colin Kazim-Richards should be sent back, he has no place in the squad now that Rhodes has been signed, hes slow, lazy and greedy and Kean will play him and he WILL squander oppertunity after oppertunity, just look at his wikipedia page, a failed career sums it up, 2 tap in goals doth not make a superstar.

“International football is a similar quality to what I am used to playing at Blackburn. At Blackburn there is good quality there the same as Scotland. I enjoy being around the squad. Playing for Scotland at any level is a great honour for me, something I have always enjoyed from when I first played for my country.”
Hanley admits he is toiling for game time at club level at the moment. “For me personally, I haven’t really played much. I had the cup game (against MK Dons) in midweek and then I came on after ten minutes in the game (against Leeds) at the weekend. It was good to get some minutes under my belt there. I am still young, still working away at Blackburn trying to learn off older boys, trying to get myself into the team. Scott Dann and Gael Givet are two really exepreinced boys in front of me. They are really good with the young lads. It is good to learn from them.
“The Championship is a really difficult league, but we have won a couple and drawn a couple of games already. We will just push on and try and stay up the top end of the table. The manager (Steve Kean) is pleased to see me involved with Scotland, but he is pleased to see any of the boys playing international football. But as I am involved with Scotland and he is Scottish it is pleasing for him.”
So at least the lad admits he is still learning the game - so there is hope yet and he also says he rooms (for internationals) with Jordan Rhodes so that is a good bit of team bonding there that can only help the Rovers..

Theres nothing worse than a shaky defender, having said that, at the end of last season Hanley was a superstar, I think given the right game time he could prosper although it would have been nice if we could have signed a tried and tested defender and sent Hanley out on loan for a year to learn his trade towards the bottom end of the division.
On a happier note I see Goodwillie is only loaned until January (when best returns?), I sure hope Crystal Palace don't have a buyout clause.

Jordan Slew in action for Oldham
Four of Rovers' five players out on loan saw action on Saturday but it would turn out to be a day of mixed fortunes.
Jordan Slew lasted just 22 minutes at Fratton Park as Oldham Athletic defeated Portsmouth 1-0.
The on-loan striker having picked up a reoccurrence of a back injury and he has now returned to Brockhall for treatment.
Fresh from his deadline-day loan move to Crystal Palace, David Goodwillie started on the bench as Crystal Palace picked up their first win of the new season with a 2-1 home win over Sheffield Wednesday.
The Scottish striker played the last 27 minutes as the Eagles registered victory at Selhurst Park.
Ryan Edwards was on the winning side for the first time this campaign as Rochdale defeated Barnet 2-0 at Spotland.
The central defender played the full match as goals from Ashley Grimes and Dele Adebola gave John Coleman's side all three points.
Anthony O'Connor again played the full match for Burton Albion but they couldn't build on their shock midweek Capital One Cup win over Leicester City as they lost 3-0 away at Exeter City.
The only player not to feature was Myles Anderson, he was an unused substitute as Aldershot Town lost 4-1 away at Fleetwood Town.

He was the pick of a good bunch and ironically plays centre half. Is this a stroke of genius getting him some much needed competitive experience, leaving him available for recall when we lose a couple of our current cb's to injury. r was it so we could free up some space to bring in a lessa than qualified Portuguese lad who has no pedigree and in is new to the English game? Discuss. Can't believe it's not been broached already in thus forum
A serious question lads. Apart from Hanley, do we have any of our home grown centre backs in the Reserves or Youth squad that might be ready for a move up to the first team ? We don't hear much about that squad of young players that did so well last season. Will they become disillusioned with all these young Portugese players getting in front of them ?

Couldn't agree more with everyone that we need more defensive cover. It's criminal given how many clean sheets we kept last year that we haven't signed at least one centre-back to replace Samba or Nelsen.
I'm generally happy with Kazim-Richards though. Yes, he scored two tap ins that anyone could have put away, but you've still got to be in the right place at the right time to do it. If he can weigh-in with 10-15 goals this season, he'll have been a good investment.
My intense dislike of Kean remains, and everything is far from right at the club. But for the first time since Kean took over, I'm watching a team that at least wants to try, even if some of them do lack a little (or a lot) in talent department.

I've never known a club rely on 2 CB's for a season, we WILL come up short sooner or later. Colin Kazim-Richards should be sent back, he has no place in the squad now that Rhodes has been signed, hes slow, lazy and greedy and Kean will play him and he WILL squander oppertunity after oppertunity, just look at his wikipedia page, a failed career sums it up, 2 tap in goals doth not make a superstar.I cant agree with you comments on Kasim-Richards, he looks like he is prepared to work and produce the goods for Blackburn. He has played twice and scored twice, how much more do you want from him? No one is calling him a superstar but for me if he can keep up a good scoring rate for us (tap ins or not) then we should support him on the field. Rhodes has played once and not scored so his record is worst that KRs so are you looking to send him back, or sell him on? I think most agree that we do need defensive cover and hope that with Martin Olssen staying he maybe back to help out defence. Overall we have a good squad, except as you point out cover at CB is lacking. Lets just get on with the season, support the players we have and lets hope they can do the business and get us promotion. No point in slagging off players that are showing some intent !

8:48am Tuesday 4th September 2012 in Football By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter

We need all of our good players fit but I cannot help but wonder why a couple of decent experienced defenders were not brought in before the deadline.Givet has an heart condition Dann is injury prone and defensively frail and Hanley gets into a state of panic when the opposition run at him.Where is Olsson is he still injured or sulking? The defence is as important as the attack but from being the worst defence in the Premiership does he think they will be the best in the Championship?

So now that they will probably be fit in a fortnight, let's not bother, eh Steve. After all, it's not like we're going to throw away leads and ship loads of goals, is it ? You tool.

Hi MxMave.....talking about defenders I just read an interview that the Edinburgh Evening News did with Grant Hanley:

I cant agree with you comments on Kasim-Richards, he looks like he is prepared to work and produce the goods for Blackburn.

If every single fan does this it would cause massive disruption, and affect Venkys month end accounts (if items purchased near end of month, and the brought back for refund early following month - could even be done over 2 fiscal years!!).

Both of his goals were tap-ins that anyone could have scored and the amount of blundered oppertunities before the goal he scored (in the hull game at least) did not convince me that this guy has any talent to speak of.

Hi MxMave.....talking about defenders I just read an interview that the Edinburgh Evening News did with Grant Hanley:
“International football is a similar quality to what I am used to playing at Blackburn. At Blackburn there is good quality there the same as Scotland. I enjoy being around the squad. Playing for Scotland at any level is a great honour for me, something I have always enjoyed from when I first played for my country.”

Hey FR, I just read that article too!
