Kean calls on Rovers to become ruthless

STEVE Kean admits Blackburn Rovers have to be more “ruthless” after throwing away a two-goal lead on Saturday – but insists two refereeing blunders were where the real blame lay.

Ruben Rochina’s sublime 84th minute back heel salvaged Rovers a point in the thrilling 3-3 draw at Elland Road as they maintained their unbeaten start to the Championship campaign.

Earlier, Rovers had raced into a 2-0 lead through Markus Olsson’s first goal for the club and a clinical strike from Nuno Gomes but a defensive collapse saw Leeds turn it round to lead 3-2 – with Rovers insistent two goals should not have been allowed.

Centre back Gael Givet will have x-rays on a suspected fractured foot bone today, while his defensive partner Scott Dann will have a hamstring strain assessed, after limping off just 10 minutes into the game.

Kean said: “We need to be more ruthless and we need to take the sting out of games but I don’t think you can legislate too much for the goal that gets them back in the game – it is a foul. If we go in 2-0, it is a totally different game.

“We are disappointed because we were excellent and we feel a big turning point was a blatant foul on Paul Robinson.

“Then they got their tails up.

“Certainly the second goal Gael is nudged in the back, I think it is Becchio, great finish but we feel as though that was a foul too. There were big turning points in the game and we feel we were on the wrong end of a couple.”

Kean was left concerned by the manner of Rovers’ second half collapse though as his side struggled to cope with Leeds’ aerial bombardment.

But was left satisfied with a points return of eight points from four games ahead of next weekend’s international break.

“We are very concerned defensively in the second half,” he said. “Not only long straight balls but the wide free kicks that were coming in, we felt we were far too open so we will be drilling the players on that.

“We feel as though Paul Robinson was not getting any protection at the back post, we were too open, the spaces were too big and we were letting Leeds United players run through what should be a very, very tight zone.

“We are disappointed with that but we will work on it until we can it much better. When Grant came on I thought he did very well, Gael Givet probably should have come off – he took an injection because he might have cracked a bone on his foot.

“He stayed on and Grant wobbled his knee. Everyone was digging in, we have come to a really, really tough venue and we have come back and nicked a point and dug in there. It is four games unbeaten and a good return.”

Rovers have clearly a squad capable of winning this league by a decent margin. The owners must take some credit for appointing Shebby Singh who appears to have made an impact with better signings than Kean made last year. He also appears to have fans backing which Kean has never managed to do. Before people point out he was wrong publically criticising MGP, he was, I was equally horrified when I heard that comment on TV, but he did have a valid point and it does appear to have motivated MGP but it should have been said in private. He made a mistake and apologised which again is more than Kean has ever done.
All we need now is a manager put in place who can coach this squad and guide us back up. We have had a good start but it could easily have been played 4 lost 4.

Come on Venkys you have invested well this summer, brought in Shebby Singh who at least attracts better players and commuincates with the fans. Now unite the fans and remove Kean and take us back up.

I wonder if after the summer spending and if Kean was removed, would the action group back Venky's? I think I would....Over to Mr Mullan???

Unfortunately whilst we applaud the results so far. It is a double edged sword. Great! we are up near the top, but, it is more by good luck than good management. The Venky's sat in on their plush sofa's in faraway India will be thinking everything in the garden is rosy. Well it isn't. Were we had no luck last season and no good results this season we are having all the luck and good results. But nothing has changed other than the luck, which will surely run out soon and we will be caught out as a team easily beaten, especially in the second half, when we run out of steam and the manager runs out of ideas.
Get a good manager innow and we can build on our good start.

There is the problem of having players in midfield who don,nt have 90 minute legs...and this puts pressure on the defense and also limits the quality of service given to the forwards, of course....
I agree fitness as been a concern over the last two seasons and still is.
Having 35 year old (x 2) hold those positions is a wee downfall with the teams 2nd half performances it seems.
Still, IF the team can kick on from here after the international break they could be very well positioned in two months time (also not in the League Cup, of course helps !).
On the down side....conman Kean would still be at the helm !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our midfield players are letting us down, and making our defence seems week. We were leaking goals when Samba was playing, is probably one of the best defenders around. Getting a new defender wont help.

Players like Fabregras (of Arsenal) keep the ball in their opponents half. I believe we should mould Rochina as center midfielder, as he his our best passer by a mile. Then make use of Nunes, Formica and Gomes before the striker, as with these players they will keep the ball most of the match, and tire the opposition!

PersianRover says...
11:38am Mon 3 Sep 12

To add, this puts pressure on the opponent, not putting on players who cant really pass but are better tacklers on like Jason Lowe, as evidently inviting too much pressure on and they will score.

When we were ahead last season, and then we lost, do you remember who Kean took off? Rochina and Formica and replaced them with stronger players who could not hold onto the ball, and what happened???

Not blaming Jordan Rhodes who will be a decent buy, but for that kind of outlay you could have got two decent centre backs, or one decent centre back and a defensive midfielder, but you are a twonk and we are only second by mistake. The luck we have rode was the size of a blue whale.
You bought Scott dann last year knowing he was injured / injury prone and let Emerton,Salgado,Samb
a and Nelsen go, nearly your entire back four, then moaned about lack of experience!!!
Bizarre statement from the chancer that you are. Only last week when asked why you didn't get any defenders you said you felt we had players who could fill that role if need be. So Murphy and dunny at centre back next game. The mind boggles.

How can he blame the referee its swings and roundabouts we know referees have a difficult task but if we had a defence that was orgamised properly we would not be losing 3 goals in a match.

Our goals against stats are shocking since Kean took over and it was blatantly obvious we needed a couple of decent defenders and a right winger instead of the 6 cheap Portugese imports Kean brought in.The fact that Hendry's coaching has made no difference points to the lack of ability available as Dann and Hanley are poor defenders and it is obvious to everyone except Mr Magoo.

IrishRover3 says...
12:57pm Mon 3 Sep 12

Well from here on in it can only get worse, with injuries to Dann and Givet, Dann may not be the best, but he's better than some of the rest, the fundaments of winning games when your a couple of goals up is keeping possession or getting possession back as soon as the other team gets into your half, what it seems like is that the midfeld could not be bothered to put in the graft it takes to track back cos they dont have the legs, also when you want to control the game you bring the ball up from the back you don't get the keeper to hoof it up the pitch, thats how you lose possession, very basic tactics, tactics Kean still hasn't mastered and will never master if notz mastered by now. I think it will be a draw with Bristol city, on the evidence from the past games.

This is Keans team, or is it! If it is Keans team and the players brought in where accusitioned to suit Keans plans for promotion then there is a fault on both sides, Kean not understanding each players abilities and protential, however the fault also lies with the players who don't meet their potential, I think most of the midfield don't have the legs to hold a lead, so this is an issue even though those players are good at what they do, Murphy should never have been bought, everyone knew he'd suffer and will suffer as the season goes on to keep up, Dunn included in that bracket also.

Warnock admits that he admires the Rovers manager's dignified way that he has handled the abuse he received before and after their relegation. Before the game at Elland Road on Saturday Warnock told the Daily Star: “I like Steve but I couldn’t do his job. “It’s difficult to be under the cosh like he has been. “I need to be in a happy environment and I could not work otherwise. ‘‘If the fans here weren’t 120 per cent behind me then I’d be off like a shot. “All managers face problems during their careers, that’s life, but if you listened to some of the phone-ins then you wouldn’t work anywhere. ‘‘There are always two or three people who can’t stand the manager – even if your team is top of the league.”

Good points Irish but Rovers have two weeks almost to get Dann and Givet fit again (plus Kazim-Richards0 - so the injuries should not be a problem hopefully. Also the international break will allow the team to bond a bit and make the players who came in late, like Rhodes, feel more part of a team. The 'rest' can only benefit us and rest assured we will absolutely hammer Bristol City!

Again what I read makes me think what all ROVERS fans still believe and myself also, that KEANO should be out,we have been lucky,my son went to Leeds and said, quote me if you need to as I was not there that Pederson lost is legs late on also Murphey as to buck is idea's up,I will be at Ashton Gate as my son will be there, chance to see him as I live in Bristol, young Stead looking forward to getting one over us,but until Kean again gets is tactics sorted I can see this being our first defeat (hope not) want the 3pts but also want Kean out big time,he seems to have a hold on the club WHAT only some people know the true story behind that, will be glad when owners realise that the wrong man is there, need a proper football manager to take us up not a scot who knows nothing, and put my club were it is,like some quotes give him a chance,if I had done all the mistakes that man as done,I would have been gone long ago, just hope we still have the luck with us in the future and ROVERS soon to have a new manager in the future.

Doubt it, he says he wouldn't want the job for the stick Kean gets:

But he wouldn't get stick if he had this squad at the top of the league on merit rather than luck.

I read it that he thought Kean should have done the right thing and stepped down long ago (after the Charlie Adams game, at the end of the 10/11 season, after the Bolton game to name but three)

Personally I'd have Mick McCarthy down here in a heartbeat whilst he's still available.

No proper manager would get the stick that Kean gets. He would be given the chance to bed in, just like all the previous managers. Only Ince and Kidd came anywhere near being as bad as Kean. Unless we go back in time to Jim Iley. The sheer euphoria of Kean going would lift the club so high we could not fail to get promoted. Let us hope it happens soon. But not likely too.

The sooner Kean is sacked, the sooner we can start progressing as a club and we can crack on with promotion back to where we belong.

Kean trying to shift the blame away from himself yet again. He bought a ruthless striker, Rhodes, but what has it go to to with him and the attackers? Nowt! The attack showed it can do it in the first half. The defeat had nothing at all to do with being ruthless.

Kean can say that about every game and it will be true - we need to be more ruthless. It is always true of every team. They could all be doing with being more ruthless. It's a totally empty useless phrase. A totally lame excuse.

Kean's (and Hendry's) defensive tactics are to blame and they negative effect they have on the team. It's been that way since Kean day 1. It will continue like that until Rovers get a proper manager, not a shareholder who only cares about himself.

A good defender positions himself that he does not have to do last ditch tackles, goal line clearances ,a top defender does not have to dye his hair blonde to get noticed on the park ,ask Tony Adams or Bobbly Moore they were great defenders but you don`t remember them for the dramatic last ditch goal line clearance , that actually is very pool positional defending., Hendry`s defending was basically unprofessional uneeded drama.

I was thinking much the same thing myself, Ronnie. Although you can't deny Hendry was a hero and made many saving tackles, that doesn't mean he knows an awful lot about defending. It was just raw instinct with him I think. Nothing wrong with that, but now he's a coach what is he going to tell the defenders? Probably nothing much about positioning or tactics. His shenanigans off the pitch with his bankruptcy and conning his friends who he is an egocentric barstad rather than a team player.

No sense in hoofing the ball up the pitch, lossing possession and not putting pressure on the opposition, you are just inviting them to come at you if you do that, but keans knows that from the Leeds game off course, idiot!

Hi Jog, when Hendry came up against class he struggled, remember Gazza flicking him one way then the other in the England v Scotland game when he scored, last ditch tackles and throwing himself about yes he was brave heart but class no.
Coaching abilitys are not much better looking at our goals against column.

Kean is doing his best to get back to top in the table with respect to other teams in the same level likes Bolton and Woles.

Still in the midfield and defence connection need to build strong. They should control the ball in much efficient manner that the opposition players really come behind and get the ball, be ruthless if necessary that is why games got yellow card and red card, just use it and get the bench players get more chance to play. Get a WIN in important as a team.

Murphy and Dunn should swap and play. Hope Martin Ollson will be ready for next match and control the right back. If you look at the defence players, all are prem experiance players, but quality and ruthless mind is less with them. They need more power on there legs to stay 90mts.

All the best to Kean and his team. Hope Kazim/Rochina and Gomes/Rhodes will be the best forward in the season.

TALL and FIT defenders needed in the back, All the long passes is a easy go on the last match. our defenders are cluless and cannot control the inflow into the box, this causes more damage to our defenders fitness and get tired at the end. Hope this area will workout with midfeilders and defence by next match. Opposition game plan change should sense by the players and act accourding to it fast and Kean should involue more with substitution options in an effective way to control the game in his pocket.

Except, of course, that it wasn't a foul. Robinson went crashing into Becchio, trying to catch the ball by the looks of it. He could've punched it clear without getting underneath their player. I'm sorry but when it comes to crosses into the box he's become a liability.
