Accrington Stanley keeper Dunbavin ‘is on fire’
12:10pm Thursday 23rd August 2012 in Sport
PAUL Cook has paid tribute to goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin after two man of the match performances helped Accrington Stanley to record six points in their opening league fixtures.
The Reds followed Saturday’s 1-0 win at Southend with a 2-0 home victory over Port Vale on Tuesday.
Dunbavin was again outstanding as the Reds withstood pressure from Vale and Cook, who is also trying to sign another keeper, has been delighted with the 32-year-old’s form.
“Ian Dunbavin is on fire at the minute, he’s full of confidence and some of the saves he’s making beggar belief,” Cook said.
“He’s putting back to back performances together and that’s what football’s about.
“A lot of people can play well on the day but to put two performances in is great credit to him.
“We know Ian will make a mistake soon and when he does that we will back him. Goalkeeper sdo make mistakes but the biggest thing about football is confidence and our lads are just starting to get it. The work ethic from the group is ridiculous.”
The squad played a behind closed doors game at Tranmere yesterday and Cook hopes to make a signing before Saturday’s home game against Exeter.
* Stanley’s long-serving academy manager Phil Hackney looks likely to leave the club.
His future is yet to be finalised but he is currently away from the club after differences in opinion over the club’s youth system.
