Blackburn Rovers advisor Singh apologises for comments
9:52am Monday 13th August 2012 in Sport
Exclusive By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
SHEBBY Singh has issued a public apology to Steve Kean and Morten Gamst Pedersen – after explosive comments made to fans on Saturday sparked unrest in the Blackburn Rovers camp.
Speaking at an open meeting organised by the Blackburn Rovers Action Group, Singh made some derogatory comments about both boss Kean and long-serving midfielder Pedersen.
At the meeting, global advisor Singh also told supporters Kean would be sacked if he lost three games in a row – but it was the personal comments that left him red faced.
The Lancashire Telegraph understands Kean and Pedersen are both furious with Singh, with the Malaysian apologising to both at a squad meeting in Ireland yesterday morning.
But, with the whole squad upset by Singh’s comments, he has deemed it necessary to make a public apology through the Lancashire Telegraph.
Among the comments, Singh said Kean’s promises had to be taken ‘with a pinch of salt’, while he likened Pedersen to a ‘pensioner’.
Singh said: “I would like to extend an apology to Steve Kean because some things were said on Saturday.
“I think they would have hurt Steve Kean’s feelings and, for that, I sincerely apologise.
“Some things are said in jest that don’t come across like that when repeated, but I am not making excuses. I apologise for hurting any feelings.
“I would also like to apologise to Morten Gamst Pedersen for what was said. There are no excuses and Morten is a great character.
“My blunt honesty also sometimes upsets people and sometimes rubs people up the wrong way.
“I am making efforts to bring the club back to the fans and, in trying to do that, I have gone too far. I am trying to find the middle ground.”
Meanwhile Rovers are weighing up whether to raise their bid for Huddersfield Town striker Jordan Rhodes, having had a second offer rejected.
It is understood the Terriers have sent Rovers ‘a strongly worded’ letter warning them off the Scottish international, telling them the striker is not for sale.
Rovers had had two bids rejected by their Championship rivals, with Kean admitting discussions are needed to decide what to do next.
Summer signing Colin Kazim-Richards showed he is an option to play central striker, with two goals in yesterday’s 3-1 win at Cork City, despite having played most of his career out wide.
Kean said: “We will still try and strengthen. We said we would try for one on loan and one to purchase. We are still trying for that purchase and we will see how that goes.
“We have had a bid rejected for Jordan Rhodes and I will have to speak to people at the club to see what the tipping point is and how far we can go.
“We have been working very hard to get bodies in but it is nice the fans can see that Kaz can play that role through the middle. Colin is a big powerful lad and we believe that seeing as though we have lost Leon Best, predominantly he has played wide, we are trying to get him through the middle.
“He showed his power and anticipation, he knows where the ball is going to bounce.”
Meanwhile, Rovers have not had any contact from Everton about Steven Nzonzi, despite the Frenchman’s representatives telling the club a loan deal to the Toffees was on their radar.

Question, if we do sell him for £3 million, will that be the most expensive pensioner ever?

some people seem to be reacting to this with some kind of masochistic glee. let's face it, singh was most likely responding to the mood of the room in the Q&A and clearly well-over stepped the mark. it is yet another mistake made by a club rep, but after many have come on here asking for people to speak their minds and be honest about their thoughts, you cannot have it both ways.
the relationship between all the dispirate sections of the club (squad, manager, fans, owners) is clearly broken, but does picking up on every single issue really help in the long run? it really is high time all parties made a concerted effort to pull in the same direction - whatever that means. otherwise we will all be culpable for the club falling to bits.
and i know the tirade of comments will be something along the lines of, "they are a lying bunch of unforgivable buffoons who need to get out of our club NOW." but the simple fact is they are here and until at least one of these consipracies is proven or even some reasonable evidence is provided, we must accept they want the club to succeed. it is our responsibility as fans to play our part in making things work. yes we can raise concerns when things don't go exactly the way we want, but it must be in moderation. groups like BRAG are going about things largely in the right way, but they must behave responsibly in their actions. just as we expect the manager and owners to do the same. ultimately as fans our role is to support the team and the club's responsibility is to give the fans something to support. at the moment, neither role is really being carried out in the manner it should. moving forward is likely to require a bit of give and take from both sides, which is why i feel this apology should be taken in an adult fashion. he made a mistake, he apologised and should be held to account if anything like this happens again. kean and pedersen should deal with it in an adult manner, and we fans should let them all get on with it.

Now that Hoillet has gone (assuming that he isn't signing for us in the next 48 hours), who is going to do the falling down in and around the box that lead to the 1 in 10 free-kicks that Pedersen gets on target? Unfortunately he's already buried 2 of his seasonal qouta in the friendlies.
Kazim looked a real prospect against 2-time League of Ireland giants Cork.

Kean's points/games ratio in the Premier League was a disgrace - and it was achieved over an extended period of about 60 games. His record in the Championship will be better - but only because the standard of the opposition is much weaker. However, I doubt very much that it will improve enough to get us into a challenging position.
His failings are so obvious - poor organisation, poor tactics, poor team selection, playing players out of position and a training and fitness regime that leaves our players with insufficient stamina to last 90 minutes. That explains our poor record of conceding late goals. I can't see any of that changing, so any improvement will just be down to the quality of the opposition.
I think that Singh has reached a similar conclusion and is looking for any excuse or opportunity to sack Kean. He knows that promotion depends upon it. He is also fully aware of the large number of fans who are staying away whilst Kean remains in charge. Having said that, what I don't know if he has the power to wield the axe. He claims to have, but I'm not convinced.

I can just see it now, him saying to the players and management when the all rounded on him, 'don't worry lads I didn't mean any of it'. All talk and no action this guy, we are now in an even worse mess if that was possible.
Let me state right now, we will get HAMMERED at Ipswich on Saturday, morale is at an all time low.

The only thing that came out of that meeting was that the fans there intimidated Shebby and he was obviously trying to placate the fans by showing he is on their side. All of this until he arrives back to the sanctity of his office and then he is on Kean's side again,I think its called being two faced and saying things people want to hear rather than telling the truth.
We need someone to state how it is not someone who runs scared of rubbing people up the wrong way as Kean should be rubbed up the wrong way preferably by a rabid tiger.

With regards to Pedersen, he's been coasting for several years now so its not as if Shebby's comments will make him play any worse. Who knows, he might start playing to his potential off the back of it.
As for Kean, he should just keep his mouth shut and count himself lucky that he's still in a job. At least now that Shebby has pointed out that Kean's comments can be taken with a pinch of salt, we should no longer be subjected to Kean's ultra-positive drivel each week.

I think Shebby was right in saying what he said. And if he's upset the squad then that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned. At the back end of last season, they seemed quite content to lose week in - week out and no one seemed to be laying into them as a result, so maybe we need a 'bad cop' to supplement Kean's 'good cop' approach. obviously the best thing for the club is to sack Kean and put this nightmare behind us and he was right about that.
his comments on Pedersen were a little harsh, but just a little, after watching him yesterday in Cork it was obvious that he is not going to be able to control the tempo of a game playing centre midfield. he is a valuable asset with his delivery and prowess from dead ball situations but his passing in play is sloppy and erratic and this was even shown up against a very poor Cork side yesterday. i am worried about him in there and would rather see him out wide again where he can be more dangerous. he is a good servant to the club and he deserves more respect than what he was shown by Singh. But Singhs basic point was correct.

My take on this, after being informed last night that an apology was to be issued, and reading the article countless times this morning. Shebby Singh HAS apologised for his comments which may have caused offence to Morten Gamst Pedersen, this was to prevent unrest in the camp, less than a week before the season starts following issues being raised among the squad. Lets remember too, that this is something many of our supporters were demanding for yesterday!!
In addition to this he has apologised to Steve Kean for any comments which may have gone too far and caused him any offence, this was not done by the instruction of the owners and Shebby has not been forced to apologise, the issue was causing rifts and he deemed it necessary to take this step to restore harmony in the camp.
He has not retracted any direct answers to the question regarding Steve Keans position as manager, not once has he apologised for saying he can sack Kean, or he will sack Kean, those answers have been left on the record, witnessed by hundreds in person and beamed out to thousands by Sky Sports.
He admitted in his apology that 'his blunt honesty, rubs people up the wrong way' he may have apologised but he is still saying he was being "honest" which is far from an admission that he didn't mean his comments.
The key thing to remember with Shebby Singh is, he has been a highly controversial football pundit for the last 15 years, he says what he thinks and if you don't like he then its tough. This attitude is completely wrong and impractical for a man running a football club and he needs to reign this in and stop causing controversy when appearing in public, he has no doubt been told this by others, and he has also been told it by our committee when we have met with him, its not good for him, or the club to court this kind of controversy and cause issues within the camp.
The key thing to remember though, is that the majority of us cringed when we heard his comments which were a tad ropey, many people threw their arms up in the air when they heard them, and he has now apologised to both involved for any personal offence caused, what he has not done is retracted anything which he said regarding his role and his power to carry out duties.
How does it play out next? only time will tell and the proof will be in the pudding, however Shebby Singh is the only person who, in 21 months has given us light at the end of a very dark tunnel by announcing what the supporters want him to announce, which is that he can and he will sack the manager, and it is something he has not been afraid to repeat on many occasions both privately and very publicly, without this hope, there is no hope.
Shebbys answers to the supporters questions have not changed.

My point about SS was on Saturday he said "DEFINATELY" and now, 48 hrs later he says that we have to take those comments "with a pinch of salt" - I'm 46 yrs old and the 2 meanings definately/pinch of salt put a totally differnent slant on what he has said and how it is to be understood.

Might just be speculation again but you never know.
Proof of what an absolute simpleton the man is. Clearly he got a bit carried away, and has made himself and the club look very foolish.
I have heard people speculating he may be in line for the managers job... One of a small number who'd be worse than Kean.
His antics would be similar to Ian Ormandroyd being given a job at Barcelona, and having a pop at Messi.
i also hear he is a pretty horrid bloke to work with (players and back-room) and cannot for one moment see him working with ex-pne colleagues or cow-towing to the venkys. at both derby and forest he directly criticized the owners of the clubs which must have hastened his departure from both clubs.
that that said he seems to be a good(ish) manager in the championship (god knows anybody would look good compared to our current clown) and i bet is desperate to get back into the hot seat.

Apology to Pederson, yes. Apology to Kean, no. Nothing wrong in giving Kean an ultimatum, after what he's done. Now he feels that he's may have hurt his feelings. Well what a shame. He should have the balls to stand firm, but he has also just learnt that all at BRFC bow to Kean and its he that calls the shots not Shebby. Now who will be down the road first Kean or Shebby, let me guess. We know what happened to the last one that crossed Kean and called for his resignation.
We are all victims of one mans dream. A dream in which he thinks he's a football manager.
His dream our nightmare. Kean Out.

Action Group Committee Member.
Shebbys answers to the supporters questions have not changed.

some people seem to be reacting to this with some kind of masochistic glee. let's face it, singh was most likely responding to the mood of the room in the Q&A and clearly well-over stepped the mark. it is yet another mistake made by a club rep, but after many have come on here asking for people to speak their minds and be honest about their thoughts, you cannot have it both ways.
the relationship between all the dispirate sections of the club (squad, manager, fans, owners) is clearly broken, but does picking up on every single issue really help in the long run? it really is high time all parties made a concerted effort to pull in the same direction - whatever that means. otherwise we will all be culpable for the club falling to bits.
and i know the tirade of comments will be something along the lines of, "they are a lying bunch of unforgivable buffoons who need to get out of our club NOW." but the simple fact is they are here and until at least one of these consipracies is proven or even some reasonable evidence is provided, we must accept they want the club to succeed. it is our responsibility as fans to play our part in making things work. yes we can raise concerns when things don't go exactly the way we want, but it must be in moderation. groups like BRAG are going about things largely in the right way, but they must behave responsibly in their actions. just as we expect the manager and owners to do the same. ultimately as fans our role is to support the team and the club's responsibility is to give the fans something to support. at the moment, neither role is really being carried out in the manner it should. moving forward is likely to require a bit of give and take from both sides, which is why i feel this apology should be taken in an adult fashion. he made a mistake, he apologised and should be held to account if anything like this happens again. kean and pedersen should deal with it in an adult manner, and we fans should let them all get on with it.

Yes, Pederson has been sitting back very comfortably on his current contract the last 2/3 years and with a year to go I would be surprised if we will see any 100% commitment from him, especially in this very physical championship league....he certainly does not like to get his shorts dirty !
