Darwen lose Town thriller

AFC Darwen’s season started with a pulsating seven-goal thriller – but sadly in the defeat for Kenny Langford’s men.

It was the Salmoners that struck first with a long range striker from captain John Leeming.

But the hosts soon levelled through Paul Keenand and then, with the game going from end to end, Michael Boyle gave Ashton the lead, despite Darwen going close at the other end.

Darwen grabbed a leveller before half-time when Stephen Lee, with his back to goal, swivelled and lashed home.

The speed of the game continued after the break and on 72 minutes it was Ashton that retook the lead, Steven Mahoney’s deflected shot sneaking into the net.

Sub Sam Wilkie added a fourth for Town before Leeming scored again deep into injury time.
