Last gasp Saints stun the Reds

Colne conceded a late goal and let the points slip in their first game of the season at the XLCR Stadium.

St Helens shocked the Reds by taking the lead after only 10 minutes when Steve Edwards found the net with a low diagonal shot into the bottom corner. And Colne had a lucky escape after 24 minutes when Edwards crashed a header against the crossbar with the home defence stranded.

But Nigel Coates’ side came back strongly towards half time and Dominic Craig grabbed an equaliser after 40 minutes when he blasted a 20 yard shot into the top corner of the visitors’ goal. As Colne piled on the pressure in the second half their best chance fell to Paul Fildes, who saw his first time volley blocked by the keeper and later Paul Coote headed inches over the bar from a glorious opening.

But with four minutes left a headed clearance by the Colne defence fell to Saints defender Craig Fitzjohn, who blasted in an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area for St Helens Town’s winning goal.
