Howieson and Payne play for Oly Whites

THERE was an East Lancashire link as New Zealand men's football team began their Olympic campaign.

The Oly Whites suffered a 1-0 defeat to Belarus at the Ricoh Arena, renamed the City of Coventry Stadium for the London 2012 Games.

But it was nevertheless a memorable night for Tim Payne and Cameron Howieson.

Eighteen-year-old Blackburn Rovers midfielder Payne started the game, while 17-year-old Cameron Howieson came on as a 73rd minute substitute.
