Kean calls for fair price over Junior’s QPR switch

STEVE Kean admits Blackburn Rovers have heard nothing from Junior Hoilett this summer – but has called for his final price tag to reflect the work they have put into his development.

The Rovers boss said he “thinks” the Canadian has signed for QPR but fears there is a long way ahead before they know what compen-sation fee they will receive.

Mali striker Garra Dembele has ended his short trial with the club but Portuguese duo Edinho Junior and Paulo Jorge are understood to have moved towards a permanent deal after featuring in the friendly double header on Saturday.

Kean also admitted Rovers were running out of patience in their chase for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva and said they would soon have to look elsewhere as his efforts to strengthen continue.

The club are still waiting to receive a formal offer for Hoilett’s registration, after his contract expired, but otherwise the case would be settled at a tribunal.

Daniel Sturridge’s move to Chelsea from Manchester City was settled in a similar manner and, with the striker eventually going for up to £6million, Kean is hoping Rovers will also get what they deserve.

Hoilett moved to Rovers from Canada at the age of 13 and, seven years on, Rovers are looking to be compensated significantly for their efforts.

Kean said: “We haven’t heard anything from Junior. I believe he has signed for QPR but that has not been confirmed yet.

“I think he has had a medical but we haven't been told that officially from QPR, we just heard on the grapevine. I don't know the process now. They might make us an offer for his registration but if not it might go to a tribunal.

“We feel we have played a large part in his development, we wish him all the best but it would have been nice if we had a call.

“I don't know what the figure was for Daniel Sturridge, but I know it was a chunky figure. We have had Junior a long time, we have put a lot of time and effort in him and Im sure that will be reflected in the price.

“If lessons are to be learned, when we signed him a few years ago on a two year contract, if that had been a three or four year, he would still be our player. But that is a lesson learned.”

Nuno Gomes and Mauro Formica were on target as Rovers beat Fleetwood 2-0 in Saturday's first pre-season friendly.

Brian Smikle's header was enough to give Accrington Stanley a 1-0 win in the second game at the Crown Ground, but Kean was delighted with the afternoon.

He said: “Playing two games back to back gives everyone a lot of minutes very quickly. To get that amount of minutes into their legs, on the back of Austria, is a really good exercise.

“The results are not the important thing at this time of the season. First of all, it is a fitness exercise and we are looking at things tactically.

“We had some nice forward play and Danny Murphy showed his class. He doesn't only keep the ball, he plays a lot of forward passes. He gets the ball into the man at the front and I think controlled the pace of the game.

“We know we still have to strengthen and we will be working hard to do that and I am confident we will get some bodies in.”

Bradley Orr and Marcus Olsson picked up groin and hip injuries respectively, while Morten Gamst Pedersen, Mark Bunn and Martin Olsson missed out through injury.
