I always think of midields in terms of units and during my lifetime we have ben blessed ith 2 exceptional units and one that would have prospeed better in a more rounded team. For those of us who remember the early 60's there were two great midfield tandems at Burnley and Tottenham and it was these that drove two of the finest football teams in the last century. Tottenham had Blanchflower and White whilst we matched them with Admson and McIlroy (if one ever has a chance to talk with a Spurs fan who remembes that era they will talk enthusiastically about the matches between us during that time) Not many years later we had another fine unit of Dobson, Nulty and Collins. The one that is often forgotten is the one betwwen them O'Neil and Harris. So my nominations are:
Adamson and McIlroy;
O'Neil and Harris;
Dobson, Nultyand Collins.
Sorry Martin (D) but I would have to go for the 2 Jimmys.

First instance I have to agree with hormerod. I well remeber beiong at WHL when we fought back from 4-0 at ht to a 4-4 draw when it was hailed as the match of the century. I wasn't as disappointed at this match as I was at Villa Park and Wembley when Spurs thwarted us both times.

I will agree as well re Dobson, Nulty and Collins who can forget the Elland Road match when Collins ruled the pitch with some sublime passing

Must of course add Noble his head was just made for football

So in no special order except of course Jimmy Mac and Jimmy Adamson being preferred choice

Jim Mac - Jimmy Adamson, P. Noble
M. Dobson, D.Collins, G.Nulty

Out of all the speculation this past few weeks but not in relation to midfield particularly but Ian Brennan seems to have been overlooked by everyone. Anybody remember his goal at Anfield?

Jimmy Mac, Ralph Coates and Martin Dobson are the obvious choices. Honorable mentions for Grezza, Trevor Steven, Peter Noble and a personal favourite of mine, Tommy Cassidy (did the simple things well, and hardly ever gave the ball away).

As a 'Younger' Claret I unfortunately missed out on watching some of the greats you mention. Grew up with the likes of Noble et al however I loved the way Trevor Steven had the exuberance of youth and absolute class of course. Take the bonus payments into account and he virtually worked out to be a British record transfer back in 83/84. Helped that he had some wonderful experience around him that allowed him to shine and learn, sure you know who I mean. Lot of talent in that side of 82/83 and once again we managed to blow it!
