Rovers weighing up a move for former Benfica and Portugal striker Gomes

BLACKBURN Rovers are weighing up a move for former Portugal and Benfica star Nuno Gomes as they continue efforts to increase their Championship fire power.

With last season’s top scorer Yakubu set to seal a £1million move to China, Rovers are keen to add at least two more strikers to their ranks, with Gomes understood to be pushing for a move to England.

Sources close to the 35-year-old have told the Lancashire Telegraph he is very keen on a switch to Ewood Park, with Rovers as yet undecided on whether to make the move.

The club are believed to have shown an initial interest though as boss Steve Kean considers his striking options after last season’s Premier League relegation.

Newcastle United striker Leon Best is understood to be Rovers’ immediate priority, with further talks expected imminently, after a fee in the region of £3million is understood to have been agreed between the clubs.

Ranger striker Steven Naismith is also believed to be on Kean’s radar, as he looks for an exit from the troubled Glasgow club, along with a long list of other potential options.

The addition of Gomes would just be regarded as a ‘bonus’ by the club if they opted to swoop, with his record in front of goal speaking for itself.

Gomes scored more than 100 goals during two spells at Benfica, between 1997 and 2000 and 2002 and 2011, having established his reputation at Boavista. He also enjoyed a stint at Italian outfit Fiorentina.

The striker, who turns 36 next month, has also enjoyed an illustrious international career, spanning 15 years. He helped Portugal to runners up in Euro 2004 and third place in the tournament four years later.

After being released by Benfica, he spent last season at fellow countrymen Sporting Braga but is now available on a free transfer.

Rovers have declined to comment on transfer speculation as they look to conduct their summer business behind closed doors.

Meanwhile, Yakubu is expected to complete his move to Chinese outfit Guangzhou R&F in the next few days, having held talks with them over the weekend.

The striker is expected to be followed out of the exit door by Junior Hoilett, although the out of contract winger has yet to commit himself to any club.

The Lancashire Telegraph also understands Italian giants Juventus have shown an interest in want away full back Martin Olsson.

Rovers are believed to have already turned down a £1.5million for the Swedish international this summer from an unnamed club.

If the club could get Naismith and Best they would be good signings but as for Gomes at 36 I would have serious doubts about.Would he be able to take the tumbles and knocks of championship football at 36, one things for sure should he sign the treatment room staff could have their work cut out for them next season. With the increase in games and midweek games thrown in as well the likes of Dunn, Murphy and Gomes all in the twilight of their careers they may be regular visitors.Up the blue and whites.

I don't think I've ever been so nonplussed about the start to a Rovers season. It's not that we're in the Championship that upsets me - I'll love the team wherever they are - it's the fact I have to listen to another season of lies, invented positives and the fat bald pillock spouting more of his lip-licking rubbish week in week out. I just can not get excited for it, and I find that really upsetting.

I'm totally bored of it all now. Bored of getting that feeling of anger/disgust/nausea whenever I see a statement or interview from the club; bored of the tedious football his team plays; bored of fans arguing and bored of the total lack of humility and utter disdain with which the club treats the fans.

It isn't the same club anymore.

other sites are reporting the sale of Yakubu at £3M. I hope that someone is keeping tally of the monies gained from transfers. With the Jones and Samaba sales added, whats betting that when the venky's break even they sell the club cheap and we are left with " promising youngsters" and a few old crocks to stop the slide into the 1st Div. A dream end then would be SK rides off into the sunset kissing his Glasgo Rangers shirt

Surely Robby the answer is to focus on the 11 men wearing Rovers shirts on the pitch and to ignore the rubbish being spouted by owners, management and some other fans alike.

When the players run out it's our team against theirs and the players will most definitely need the help of our committed fans to get them through the season ahead.

All the other nonsense will work itself out with the passage of time and, tragic though it is, there is very little that fans can do to affect the outcome of ownership and management issues.

It is not the same Club but it is still our Club and it is still football and it is a fan's lot to support their team through thick and thin. T'was ever thus.

It is crucial that the present set of deluded and incapable owners is not allowed to dim the passion that fans feel for their Club because that passion will be there when the shisters have moved on and we have our Club back.

Come on OUR Blues!

At this rate you might get a place on the team..... don't say i didn't warn you before.... as for feeling better tomorrow? I find prozac washed down with vodka makes the Venky's manageable.

My greatest hope is that like many things that seemed unbearable in the past ( not just football) one day you come out the other end and can look back and laugh... That day may be a while off.... But it will come!!!!

I admire the sentiment Lusorover, however it is that very reason that I feel the wayI do.

Football, as far as I'm concerned, was created by fans, is played by fans and should be accountable to the fans. The one thing 99.999% of Rovers fans want is Kean to go, and have for a long period of time. Now I'm not for one second saying that owners should bow down to the fans and grant their every wish, but when the management of a club go against the overwhelming majority of it's fanbase for so long, then what are you left with? Yes you cheer the 11 men in blue and white shirts, but you cannot ignore what happens off the pitch - to do so would make you an observer as opposed to a fan. (For that I am purely taking the extreme of turning up on a Sat and watching the game, then switching off for the rest of the week - I am in no way claiming anyone on here is not a fan).

My point is this - the club is not being run for the players or the fans. It is being run for Steve Kean. Everyone who questions him is sacked or forced out (think Paul Hunt, John Williams, Ryan Nelsen), he keeps his job despite an appalling record and every move possible is made to strengthen his position at the club.

I'm not one to jump at conspiracy theories, in fact in some strange way I feel that Kean has manipulated Venky's in to the position we're in now and abused their trust! Whilst I fully understand some people's desire to ignore the rubbish and persevere towards the light at the end of the tunnel, I wasn't brought up to accept fools, charlatens and liars. I will question the authority and stand up for it as I believe it's best for Rovers.

It's our club in name only. They don't care about the fans! Steve Kean will lie steal and cheat his way to ensure success - and success in this case is him getting his money. What happens on the pitch is just incidental to him. I cannot stand and smile whilst my club is treated like that and I make no apologies for that.

Like I say, football and Blackburn Rovers should be for and about the people in the stands, not the man in the managers office.

Kean was registered as a player with Celtic (not that he ever played for the 1st team) and no self-respecting player ever crosses the great divide in Scotland. However as this is Coco Kean we are talking about and Rangers have just been voted out of the SPL by their peers, then who knows?? And at least we would be rid of him!!!

I'm totally bored of it all now.

How can you give support to the club, when if you dare to get a ticket for the game then you are derided by the masses?

Mr Singh is the Venky's spokesman; we will not hear directly from the family again; we'd better get use to it. He will spout the Venky mantra and report into Kean, as will Agnew.
I fear the wages for these old stagers will be better than decent; Premiership money, in the case of Danny Murphy, which is why he turned down QPR.
The policy doesn't make any sense, does it? To cut the wage bill last season, one way or another, we sold off the family silver, alienating the fans in the process. Now they bring in alternatve experience at higher costs.
It's all knee jerk, not strategy.

One thing that puzzles me is that so far - anybody at the Club who questions Stevie baby immediately gets fired.

However, we have shabby sheik - who only recently suggested Stevie gets the boot - and shabby is now ensconced at Ewood.

This raises questions in my mind as to where the power actually lies. Obviously it is not entirely with baldy otherwise shabby would not be at Ewood.

From this it would seem that shabby is senior to stevie baby.

Stevie can get Paul Hunt fired but then shabby can come in over the top....

All very blooody queer to me.

The question we all want answered is how much clout has the bald one got ? And where does he get this clout from ?

Andy - over to you son.

It's the shebby/Kean show, anything that will stir the ticket sales.
It has become less and less about football, and more about as big and cheap as possible in order to draw a crowd.

They have made their money back and are about to offload when they feel ready, the future of football at Ewood is none of their concern, as long as they can get as many fickle fans to swoon at their ex world class players.
The club is in freefall, the owners still confused.

What is wrong with Rochina and Goodwillie? Neither of them could get a full game last season and they appear to be staying. Give thema chance, they were not cheap signings. And lets face it, the defence, with all the enforced chnages by Venky's grabbing the money from sales is where we need to improve - especially if Olsson, Givet and Dann are going.

Has Grandma Venky just bought a copy of Football Manager 2002 for Keanocchio and Shabby? Embarassing! If these so called big names, who are most probably well past their sell-by date, are supposed to appease the fans - they won't! Only the odious one's departure will give us any hope for the new season. And of course Venky's getting the hell out as well whilst they're at it!

I think Murphy is a good signing for us, regardless of his age. Still perplexed as to why he came to Ewood but would welcome a signing that is actually capable of putting a penalty away!

It would be even more baffling why someone of Best's promise would want to come, but if he does, great. Not sure about Nuno and totally agree we need to start building from the back to stand any chance of holding our own in this league.

It seems strange though that the club is grinding into gear now though. If Kean was just a manager then he would have known, like the rest of us, that he should have been out after the Bolton game just before Christmas. After that, with a new manager and the squad we had, I think we could have easily stayed in the prem league. It just seems that the owners didn't want that, be it parachute payments or whatever.
I've found it hard to contain my anger over the season, from the way the club has been run to how we, as fans, have been condemned until we were relegated - after which the 'embargo' was lifted and the media ritly started to question the management.

I will be cheering our boys on from the away grounds this season, but I certainly won't be reading any of Kean's interviews or post-match comments in the LET because I simply haven't got time for his pathetic excuses and 'positive'-spun BS any more. To hell with Kean, I just hope we can win promotion again in my lifetime (I'm 38), but somehow I doubt it.

Spot on Robby Rover.

Your a man of total integrity as far as BRFC are concerned.

Should the 'Odious One' have a little of what we possess regards our club he would have walked, but he cares not one iota about BRFC, and cares only for his own delusion ability.

I loathe the cretin and his debunker is there for all to see.

He has walked into our home with a rudeness and arrogance that is breathtaking.

I will never step foot back on Ewood whilst he his anywhere near it. He has single-handedly tarnished everything I love about BRFC, and it looks like their is no sign of it abating whilst this imposter remains.

His record, in my opinion, will not improve. At best, he his a lower division manager, and I believe I will be proved right ?

Rid him of any control at BRFC and I will return, gladly.

Nope we will follow an identical approach to the one that was so successful last season. Our scintillating pass and move football will always mean that we score one more than the opposition. If the defence is sh1t then the forwards will just have to be more productive. That's why we are looking to recruit as many end-of-career players as possible because their overall goals-scored totals are the largest. Simples.

Steve Kean - Genius. Fulham wouldn't have been promoted in 2001 without the great work he did with their under-12s side. Similarly, Rovers 1995 Championship success would have been impossible if it wasn't for Kean, and his cross for the Maradonna "hand-of-god" incident is the stuff of legend.

I wouldn't be so arrogant as to imply for any supporter of BRFC to boycott.

I only speak for myself here Kean O to get Kean Out.

Booing ? Never done it, and never will. A very destructive form of protest that never really hits the correct mark due to the interpretation that follows.

The frustration I feel is tangible in so much that the 'Odious One' can be in no doubt as to my feelings. That is a much more damning indictment than booing him. Give the oaf no reason to fail only than that of his own arrogant stupidity.

That Stennalift onto the pitch is going to be a bit of an embarrassment.
Plus as you stay the treatment room is going to have to get a considerable upsizing.

Agreed. He would be a good second half sub now and again in the premiership to change a game. But you dont have time in the championship and its very physical- both would mean Gomes would not be effective.

Come on lads there are subtle ways to get at Kean, remember at Ewood they banned banners, they turned the music up load at half time and full time, so the answer is now I/WE are not attending Ewood until Kean is sacked is to get at him at AWAY matches,

I have never been to Accrington Stanley but this year will be a first, a friendly where the stewards will be normal, a small ground where I presume Kean and Shabby and Agnew will be there, where we can raise the roof from kick off, we can wave our banners and shout as loud as we want and HE/THEY cannot stop us, lets let Shabby know what the true feelings of the fans are.

Cost to us is minimum, we will help out a local club and we may even win (doubt it) and this sets a frame work for all away matches untill our message gets through.

Could not have put it better Robbie

Perfect, we should all boycot games till he goes, gather outside the stadium with loud radio commentry so we are supporting but not paying the clowns a penny. all other avenues have failed big style,, carry on the booing lads
That is a much more damning indictment than booing him. if we dont boo and dont boycott, what do we do ?,, see us spiral down into the lowers leagues -- a dead cert im afraid
I am boycotting until this cretin leaves - 100% Give me an audience with this guy, and he will be in no doubt as to just how I feel, and his spiv ways ! Will he do it ? No chance. I hope upon hope for the sake of BRFC we do not plummet through the Leagues with this crude management in place, but we will have to see, eh ? Arte et labore

Kean out

Boycott stays on

Shabby start listening to THE fans NOT keans ****
Be good to see you there, and like you say, we can vent our spleen with no interference ? Unless of course they get at Accy Stanley in banning any untoward hostilities ?

Now that would be very revealing wouldn't it !

Let them buy who they want its nothing to do with us noone at our club takes any notice of us we are just there to provide an atmosphere which we wont be able to do next season because most of us will be watching on our lap tops.

I cannot see him being able to attract any decent strikers unless they are like Gomes after a retirement plan but Salgado was also here because of that and we warmed to him even though he was to slow to cope.

Its a catch 22 for us every time they get a decent signing we will want to renew our season tickets but it would probably take the entire Barcelona midfiel to attract me to repurchase my season tickets whilst Mr Kean is still manager.

Give the oaf no reason to fail only than that of his own arrogant stupidity. Arte et labore
if we dont boo and dont boycott, what do we do ?,, see us spiral down into the lowers leagues -- a dead cert im afraid
I am boycotting until this cretin leaves - 100% Give me an audience with this guy, and he will be in no doubt as to just how I feel, and his spiv ways ! Will he do it ? No chance. Come on lads there are subtle ways to get at Kean, remember at Ewood they banned banners, they turned the music up load at half time and full time, so the answer is now I/WE are not attending Ewood until Kean is sacked is to get at him at AWAY matches, I have never been to Accrington Stanley but this year will be a first, a friendly where the stewards will be normal, a small ground where I presume Kean and Shabby and Agnew will be there, where we can raise the roof from kick off, we can wave our banners and shout as loud as we want and HE/THEY cannot stop us, lets let Shabby know what the true feelings of the fans are. Cost to us is minimum, we will help out a local club and we may even win (doubt it) and this sets a frame work for all away matches untill our message gets through. Kean out Boycott stays on Shabby start listening to THE fans NOT keans ****
Be good to see you there, and like you say, we can vent our spleen with no interference ? Unless of course they get at Accy Stanley in banning any untoward hostilities ? Now that would be very revealing wouldn't it !
I doubt Kean will be there but nonetheless, we should attend in force, creating the largest crowd ever at the Crown Ground and the loudest anti-Kean demonstration to date. The media will be expecting it and it may, just may, get back to Mrs Desai.

Ryan34,
there are literally thousads of reasons Murphy has signed for Rovers ad each one has the queens head on it!

The only people this potential signing will impress is Venky's when it's explained to them that he's an Portuguese international, although I doubt Kean will bother explaining to them that, in all likelihood, he'll never get another cap.

The only positive I could take from the signing of Murphy and, possibly, Gomes is that their arrivals will affect the squad's average age, therefore preventing Kean from using the, "we've got the youngest squad in the league" excuse.

I don't quite understand the statement that your frustration is so tangible that Kean can be in no doubt as to your feelings if you are not prepared to boycott or boo? Is he aware because you write to him, email or telphone? I don't think telepathy works in this instance. I write to him and to Agnew but they are ignorant and fail to reply. It may be that, like Harry Rednap, Kean had minimal formal education (he wasn't there the day they did composition and good manners) and cannot put a letter together.
The man has failed as a manager through his own arrogant stupidity and incompetence, yet still he holds his position!
The time has come for action, forget your high principles, join in the protests. It's liberating! Carpe Diam!

Now it's all becoming clear what is actually going on a Ewood. Hendry will be taken but not as some sort of coach but as a first team player. Shaggy will play him in goal as this is where he believes his strengths are.

Just watching Spain and Portugal and sure I spotty Shaggy and Keano in the crowd looking for potential signings. No doubt Ronaldo will get a tap on the shoulder from the dynamic duo after full time.

Just watching Spain and Portugal and sure I spotty Shaggy and Keano in the crowd looking for potential signings. No doubt Ronaldo will get a tap on the shoulder from the dynamic duo after full time.

“Open and construction meeting with
@ shebbysingh this am. We had a frank
discussion about many issues. He has a
chance to make a difference.

Something has to change. His ideas and views
make sense and he approached me to open
dialogue. It’s hard not to be wary but he has
authority so if he’s allowed to make big
decisions then maybe, just maybe, it might be
the first shoots to opening dialogue again.
I found him articulate, intelligent and in touch
with all the main issues. He spoke
professionally, honestly and says he had
power to change things that need to be
changed. We all have our own views and he
will need some time to apply them. Results
will be the main barometer of any success.
Various changes and improvements will be
added soon that he hopes will be fruitful.
Personally I would give him a fair chance”

Now that is an interesting bit of news.....If Wayne Wild is willing to give the guy a chance to prove himself then I think we should all respect his views and comments on the meeting as above...

They (The Venky's) have a lot of ground to make-up even if Shebby works out....and the club know that almost all fans agree on the one change that is essential to the club moving forward. KO.N.

Do that now and there may be time and room for the owners to prove they can actually learn how to run a football club.

I think this could change matters significantly.
Lets give the guy who puts the cones out and the man of the match against shrewsbury another chance. Get a grip, who is this nomark, he has even less significance than kit man Kean.
Tell you what Michael knighton had more experience than these bozos. Shebby who? Steve Kean who? History dictates we are staggering from one disaster to another and all we've heard from the beginning is, give us a chance. Is 18 months and relegation not long enough to show how rubbish they are?

For the attention of Kean.....Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt........ Abraham Lincoln.

Now back to Uncle Fester,...Light travels faster than sound, this is why Kean seems bright until you hear him speak.

Not so sure about this.....Raul in his twilight years for Schalke 04 was excellent, Nuno Gomes is in the same kind of mould. However I do agree its a risk, one which in our position at the moment I am not sure we should be taking.

I would never give Kean the time of day - my thoughts on his betrayal of all things Rovers is well known...but Wayne is a well respected sponsor who cares about Rovers hence his involvement in BRSIT etc and he has actually spoken with SS and if Wayne thinks we should give Singh a chance and some time to show us he makes the changes we all desire then I think I would rather go with his assessment on SS over yours.

Other things can still be continued to be worked in the background on behalf of BRSIT and BRAG etc....

Keeping the answer very simple,

Money,

Stanley need every penny and should I or any of my freinds get the stop and search treatment we will take our money else ware, nit that I will be daft enough not to try and hide my banner!!

Also on such a small ground you must surely be able to get feet away from our glorious leader and the chance to bend his ear for ninety minutes will be one of the few pleasures I will get this year as I will NOT be attending home matches whilst he is still in charge.

Benal 13 - he didn't say he liked talking football with SK in particular - he actually said he liked talking football with the waiters in his Hotel - every rovers fan should listed to this idiot in full flow - there was an awful lot of very nervous laughter from Singh in this interview - psychologists out there will read plenty into this!!

New Club policies.
1. Keep Kean quiet for a bit (shebby to spout sh1t instead)

2. Sign as many players or be linked before 10 July 2012.

3. Avoid players leaving (apart from Hoillet and Yak) before 10 July 2012.

4. From 11 July Sell as many big earners as possible.

5. From 11 July Steve can continue spouting.

This is on very good information,

Whats the relevance of the 10/11th July 2012 ??????

ed at the news we're going to sign this brilliant forward. First Murphy, now Gomes, and here's hoping we get Leon Best as well. All we need to do is get Colin Hendry back into the fold and this club will start to motor up that table and get promoted.

.????.???? The Mighty Weetabix....to paraphrase...WHO IS SHE? WHO IS SHE? What a plant! Kean must be getting desperate to find someone with the brain the size of a peanut. Nobody in their right mind can put positive spin on anything this shower do. Any player that joins this circus is just looking for a pay off.
