Golf: Nuttall will face former champion

MARK Ashworth’s Harold Ryden Trophy defence remains on track - despite an almighty scare in last night’s semi final.

The Clitheroe golfer will face Accrington’s Chris Nuttall in this evening’s final, as Ashworth looks to defend last year’s title.

Ashworth looked to be heading out when Accrington’s Tom Briggs raced into a three shot lead after just six holes.

He stayed calm though and, after pegging Briggs back, was able to seal victory on the first play-off hole.

Nuttall powered his way into the final with a dominant display of golf.

He proved too strong for Burnley’s Andy Riley to book his place in this evening’s final at Accrington golf club.

Nuttall followed up Monday night’s win over Nelson’s Nick Uttley with a four and three victory over Riley, who had seen off the sole remaining teenager, Curtis Clarkin, in the previous round.
