Paul Agnew appointed Blackburn Rovers' general manager

Blackburn Rovers Football Club has announced the appointment of Paul Agnew as General Manager.

Agnew, 54, who has worked within professional football for more than two decades will take up his new role, which will include a seat on the Board of Directors, early next month.

A former Chief Executive at Preston North End FC, he has most recently worked in a Press and PR capacity for the club.

“We believe Paul is the ideal man to take on this challenging role with responsibilities across all areas,” said Mr. Venkatesh Rao, of Rovers’ Owners Venky’s.

“His love of Rovers is very clear and we have been most impressed with what we have seen and heard of him during our time at the club. He can count on our full backing and support and we are sure he will go on to prove a very successful appointment.”

Mr Agnew said: “It is a great honour to be handed this opportunity and I will do all I can to help the club to grow and prosper.

"Suffering relegation last season obviously hurt everyone involved, but we must not get bogged down with what has been and gone. This is a time to re-group, look forward and concentrate our efforts only on aspects that we can affect and control.

“The Owners are putting their faith in me and I thank them sincerely for that. It is now up to me to repay that confidence and to help build a new and bright future for this great football club.

"I am passionate about Blackburn Rovers, my family is steeped in it, and if we can get everyone pulling together for the common good then I believe we can proceed with confidence.”

If his first job isn't to sack Kean then he can sod off like the rest of them.

Then again, judging by his close friendship with the doughnut this will only strenghten Kean's position.

I really miss the days when I enjoyed being a Rovers fan and was proud of it.

Not too surprised by this. Looks like Venky's are staffing the club (and particularly the board) with "All the Kean's Men." Other than protecting Kean from the media, Agnew did an awful job as press officer. Communication between the club and fans dwindled to near total silence under his tenure. I suppose we can expect more of the same now he is General Manager. I wonder what exactly his duties will consist of?

No need to wait for a statement on Kean's future then...the appointment of Paul Agnew confirms that Kean is here for the long haul because he's Kean's right hand man.

They're supposed to be 'like brothers' they've grown that close over the last 18 months.

Good luck.

Agnew will run the show and keep Kean in the job and it makes it clear now their will not sell up.

I can see protest getting ugly when the season starts and these guys are going to get it badly by the fans.

We need the FA to listen to us and back us and ask or fouce them to sell this club.

Mr Agnew
I hope you read the comments on this site although I doubt you do.

Your appointment as General Manager of the club I love is scandalous.

It has turned my loathing of you, Keen, Venky's and all your associated cronies to real hatred. An inner feeling I didn't know existed in me until now.

The fact that you profess to be an ardent Blackburn fan deeply offends me when you have treated it's supporters with such utter contempt.

General Manager?
WTF is that? Sounds like he is running a Tesco mini store.
Why are we surprised anymore. As an eternal optimist I keep thinking Venkys will wake up, sack the vile cretin and make a committment to the club. Reality is there is more of the same negligent mismanagement / deliberate asset stripping and we are heading into oblivion.
At least with a season ticket boycott we are not complicit.

No - please everyone - no season tickets, no home match tickets. There is absolutely no point paying them to protest inside the ground. We have been doing it for a year and they just don't care.

What an absolutely SCANDALOUS appointment this is.

1) 'General Manager'? What, are we suddenly a local corner shop? What role is this exactly? Never heard of this title in club football before.

2) Agnew is best mates with Kean. If he doesn't act in the best interests of the club, ie, sacking Kean and appointing a REAL manager, then he has failed in his job already and will prove he does NOT have the best interests in our club at heart.

3) The only reason Agnew has got this job is due to brown nosing. He has no credentials to have such a power position at a club like ours. Like Kean, he has wormed his way into a position he doesn't deserve, certainly not on merit.

What next, let me guess - Steve Kean to be given a new improved contract and another payrise? It sounds laughable but frankly nothing would suprise me as a Rovers fan anymore.

F$$k it, give Kean another contract. Pay Agnew millions a year too while you're at it. May as well bung a few more million Jerome Andersons way too at his home in the Bahamas. None of the football institutions seems to care one iota about the obvious corruption at our club and are seemingly happy to turn a blind eye.

I'm actually getting to past the point in caring anymore. Until this scum get out of my club I think I'm done with it.

So we wait over two weeks for the dust to settle and for Venky's to have a look at what has happened at the club, we are looking at everything. We are confused and need to come up with a plan, all the banal platitudes you could wish to hear. Comments from Agnew says we have to forget the past and all pull together, all in the same direction, for goodness sake it's as if last season did not happen and we did not get relegated. Says he was chief executive of Preston Both Ends, um remind me what division they are in? Speaks volumes! If the post of director of media and communication, a post that he also holds, is anything to go by, we are in for the same again this coming season, if not worse. As they say in the navy: 'sand in the vaseline, it'll be a rough old passage tonight!'

I have met & spoken to Paul Agnew many times in recent years, and I can tell you now ..

HE IS COMPLETELY INCAPABLE OF FULFILLING A SENIOR LEVEL APPOINTMENT !!!

Paul I hope you realise that your elevation to the BoD will mean you have a Fiducary duty to :

1.. Tell the truth (gonna be tricky that one) and not to willfully mislead your fellow Directors / stakeholders within the business (hmmn not looking good is it !!!!)

2.. Are personally & financially liable in the event of a financial collapse (remember the junior snake Hunt didnt want to risk his house on your loyal owners - hope you havnt risked your house you numpty !!)

AND WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOUR DUTIES - Hmmn lets just imagine :

1.. Just say YES to everything Madam asks.
2.. Make the Tea (Char-wallah)
3.. Vacant Stadium Managers job (he walked out)
4.. Vacant Dep CEO job (he walked out)
5.. Vacant Commercial Mgr job (you got him removed)
6.. Make more Tea & wash up the pots
7.. Close down Radio Rovers (they hinted on last game of season funding had been cut - no wonder they were never critical)
8.. Lay off up to 40% of BRFC workforce (Hatchet man doing the dirty work)
9.. More tea ...
Paul- just pop out of the room while we make the real decisions - go on now run along .. and find some biscuits !!!!!

Paul for a PR & Comms Director you are a shambles - u look like a dogs dinner for a start (bench jackets & denim shirts - seriously)

and you have presided over a laughable Communication strategy that has dis-enfranchised the fan base to its lowest ebb ever ..

Like all my friends & family I have not renewed my ST and will be boycotting the games until

VENKY's / KEAN / BLACK / AGNEW ARE ALL OUT !!!!

WHAT A FARCICAL APPOINTMENT !!!! I have met & spoken to Paul Agnew many times in recent years, and I can tell you now .. HE IS COMPLETELY INCAPABLE OF FULFILLING A SENIOR LEVEL APPOINTMENT !!! Paul I hope you realise that your elevation to the BoD will mean you have a Fiducary duty to : 1.. Tell the truth (gonna be tricky that one) and not to willfully mislead your fellow Directors / stakeholders within the business (hmmn not looking good is it !!!!) 2.. Are personally & financially liable in the event of a financial collapse (remember the junior snake Hunt didnt want to risk his house on your loyal owners - hope you havnt risked your house you numpty !!) AND WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOUR DUTIES - Hmmn lets just imagine : 1.. Just say YES to everything Madam asks. 2.. Make the Tea (Char-wallah) 3.. Vacant Stadium Managers job (he walked out) 4.. Vacant Dep CEO job (he walked out) 5.. Vacant Commercial Mgr job (you got him removed) 6.. Make more Tea & wash up the pots 7.. Close down Radio Rovers (they hinted on last game of season funding had been cut - no wonder they were never critical) 8.. Lay off up to 40% of BRFC workforce (Hatchet man doing the dirty work) 9.. More tea ... Paul- just pop out of the room while we make the real decisions - go on now run along .. and find some biscuits !!!!! Paul for a PR & Comms Director you are a shambles - u look like a dogs dinner for a start (bench jackets & denim shirts - seriously) and you have presided over a laughable Communication strategy that has dis-enfranchised the fan base to its lowest ebb ever .. Like all my friends & family I have not renewed my ST and will be boycotting the games until VENKY's / KEAN / BLACK / AGNEW ARE ALL OUT !!!! 100%ROVERS

This is at best total incompetence or at worst a huge scam.

Get out of our club the lot of you. If you think the fans will have the wool pulled over their eyes by waiting a few weeks before you announce that the idiot From Ewood is staying then you are wrong. The dust will never settle until the club is clean again

Fans! whats left of you could use the nearest bus shelter to protest in.
Yep and thats just what we intended. When there are only enough fans to stand in a phone box, it will be even better. You are very slow to catch on to a strategy arent you?

According to the BRFCS podcast Mrs D sacked Kean and it was agreed by all that this was the way forward. Following on from that came the leak from the Australian cricketer who had lunch with Ventakesh.

It would appear that Mrs D was then given some news that shocked her and had to reverse the decision to sack Kean. Although the shock news was not stated on the podcast, it would appear that she learned that to get rid of Kean would cost £1.6 Million. How the main decision maker, did not know that, is beyond me, but that does appear to be the case.

Obviously as we all know, Kean has been very smugly bragging that his job his safe and lets face it, either you get the chop and trouser £1.6 Million, or you keep the job and earn fortunes for being garbage anyway. That is the reason Kean has been so smug.

Strong rumours now abound that an offer is going to be made for the club. The appointment of someone to do the dirty work here in the UK by way of moving players on etc, has for now landed in the lap of Agnew. Although I can hardly agree with that appointment, someone based in the UK had to start the ball rolling trying to sort this big sad mess out.If a takeover does take place, I would expect him and Kean to be the first out, before the ink has dried on the transfer document.

What a complete circus. General Manager? They are turning it into one of their 'companies'. They make it sound like Aldi. Iv said right along that the decision to send out Dumber for interview was intentional because he wouldnt give anything away. That guy needs some special teaching. They didnt need to wait 4 weeks. They just wanted to let the dust settle before the next kick in the b##llo##. I feel totally disengaged now from that club and its going to take a lot to drag me back. Even the Burnley fan jibes have little effect. They have become pretty meaningless in the greater scheme of things.

In the scheme of things a 1.6 million hit would be pin money, Keanochio already having cost the club 25million already with his **** competency. Unless they get rid of the t1t the club will be devalued by another 10 million come end on season. On the bright side it means the Brist will be able to buy the club for 2 million.
Question you get money in the form of parachute payments over a three year period whe you drop out of the PL, If you go straight through the championship to division 1 do you get submarine payments?

As it is clear that there has been no progress or preparation of any significance at Ewood Park and Steve Kean is still in place. I really think that the time has come for the MP to demand an explanation as to what is going on. Blackburn is a town which is suffering more than most during the recession and it does not help that the Rovers are doing so badly. I said yesterday that if Mrs Desai is half decent she would not tolerate the behaviour of Steve Kean and dismiss him. What with the drinking and bad language! I sincerely hope that Jack Straw reads this and acts.

Out of interest I went on the season ticket site.....not to buy but to see the prices......not even published...does this mean we are not bothering next season....is anyone there/bothered any more. The club is in utter turmoil and unfortunately it can only be Keano who has recommended Agnew to Venkys cos they only listen to him.....so we are doomed.

It sickens me to think of starting next season in front of 5/8000 diehards with him on the sidelines hated by all. In all my years I have never ever known a scenario like it at any football club because the fans always have their say...not here not any more all we can do is watch people line their pockets with Rovers money they simply do not deserve or warrant.

No doubt the skewed positivity and lies will continue when Leeds, Sheff Wed, Burnley etc make up half our normal home gates with Kean using that as an excuse to say 'look, the fans are still coming in numbers. The majority are behind me...!' Not when we play Watford, Bristol City, Peterborough etc in January on a freezing cold Tuesday night when we are well below 10,000. Seems daft but renew to support a continuation of our demise OR boycott to support our club and an end to this disease as soon as possible.

Two weeks ago it was announced that Paul Agnew was the new Director of Communications with a seat on the board. So does he now have two seats on the board? Perhaps he can talk to himself – then, perhaps not.
Agnew said: “It is a massive honour to be invited to become director of communications….be
ing a genuine Blackburn Rovers supporter.
“I am well aware of the situation we find ourselves in. I am well aware communication has been an issue and will do my level best to make sure there are improvements.
“This is a great chance for me and it is up to me to prove I am up to a very serious undertaking.”
Well, in two weeks there has been no improvement, not one word of communication and so far he has proved he is NOT up to a serious undertaking.
So, ARE you up to this ‘serious undertaking’ Mr Agnew? Are you going to TELL Venky’s they must sever all relations with Anderson/Kentaro/SEM
/Zahavi? Are you going to TELL them that Kean MUST go in the best interests of the club? Are you going to TELL them that YOU will recommend a new manager who must NOT be an Anderson/Zahavi client and who will report ONLY to you and the board? Are you going to TELL them that YOU must be responsible for all incoming and outgoing transfers ONLY in association with the new manager. Are you going to TELL them that, on principal, you will NOT sign ANY of Anderson’s clients? Are you going to TELL them that ANY outside influence will no longer be tolerated? Are you going to TELL them that as senior executive YOU will be responsible for all appointments within the club below your level?
Are you going to TELL them that YOU will run the club, within their financial restrictions?
In other words, are you going to cleanse the club of these parasites and, as an ardent supporter for nearly 50 years, reclaim it for the fans?
Actually, I would have thought that all these issues would have been a pre-requisite to you accepting the job.
Venky’s say you will have responsibility across all areas and you can count on their full backing and support. Remember those words, Mr Agnew. They said something similar when they took over the club.
And if they don’t back you, will you, as an ardent Rovers supporter, walk away and speak publically why you were unable to do the job?
We wait with bated breath…

Away from the puzzling appointment of Agnew, there is a lot of conjecture that Venky’s are trying to sell the club.
If someone is trying to pass it on, you can rest assured it cannot be Venky’s. They wouldn’t have a clue what they were trying to sell.
So it has got to be Anderson/Kentaro/SEM
/Zahavi looking for new buyers. Therefore, if true and if it does come off, then it will just be more of the same, with new ‘owners’ the puppets of the people pulling the strings, Kean even more firmly entrenched and the club in an even deeper mess.

They wouldn’t have a clue what they were trying to sell. So it has got to be Anderson/Kentaro/SEM /Zahavi looking for new buyers. Therefore, if true and if it does come off, then it will just be more of the same, with new ‘owners’ the puppets of the people pulling the strings, Kean even more firmly entrenched and the club in an even deeper mess. roverfor60years

This is an absolute joke.
One of the main problems last year was the lack of communication from the club's owners and manager. This was the complete responsibility of Paul Agnew. Now he has been promoted? On what merits? The absolute and only reason is that he is Kean's pal and Kean has the owner's ear.
it really is time for Kean to stop playing at something he is not (a manager) the Venkeys to stop toying with Blackburn Rovers as a hobby and Paul Agnew to stop screwing the club out of thousands of pounds a year pretending to be credible (just where are Preston these days?)

And I'm a Burnley fan???!!!

I cannot understand why any fans of Rovers at all plan to attend games next season.

Our owners couldn't care less about us and will leave us to rot.

Small crowds will merely leave us open to ridicule.

An empty stadium will make very little financial difference to our real owners who make their money from transfer deals but it surely will precipitate our collapse as a creditable trojan horse inhabited by football mercenaries.

The sooner we are driven into collapse/receivershi
p/penalties from the football authorities, the better.

Only then will the scum ooze away and leave us to rebuild our club.

If people do not want to wait for this then the only viable alternative I can envisage is to adopt last season's campaign by the club to "take back Ewood" - only taking their request far more literally. Will the authorities in Blackburn really want to act against their electorate and defend those who are hell bent on destroying jobs and the remaining pride that exists in our town?

Although I can hardly agree with that appointment, someone based in the UK had to start the ball rolling trying to sort this big sad mess out.If a takeover does take place, I would expect him and Kean to be the first out, before the ink has dried on the transfer document.
that seems about right carlmc...hence the fact that Kean is on beach/gardening duty until he is paid-up and pushed out at long last ...as for Agnew as 'acting' CEO he will be responsible for making some decisions that may surprise a lot of people....in a good way - or certainly in a better way than has been seen at Ewood for a long time. I expect a lot to start happening within the next fortnight.... don't go spending that season ticket money on other things just yet....speculation? Maybe or maybe not!

I do not believe there is a 'right' or 'wrong' way to respond to the situation at Rovers. One of the tragic results of this horrible mess is that genuine supporters are at each others throats and taking their frustrations out on each other.
Personally, I will not renew my season ticket until this lot have gone but I respect the fact that other supporters feel differently ( I don’t understand some, or totally disagree with their logic in other cases) but nobody has the right to insist that they are the ‘real’ fans.
As for Paul Agnew, I read his book biography of Tom Finney. Apart from some brilliant contributions from other great players of his time ( Ronny Clayton also contributed to 'This is your Life' TV programme) and lists of facts that could be obtained from many sources the book was pretty flat. If you cannot manage to communicate effectively, about arguably, the finest English player ever, what chance do we have?
Another sad day for Rovers, when will this nightmare end.

It's the true fans, many of us have been here for 20+ years, who are taking the radical action of not renewing STs in order to shake some sense into proceedings. I cannot believe you have been at Ewood too long to hold such a simplistic viewpoint.
To believe it will all be ok if we simply turn up and sing for our team is ludicrous.

Sadly, for all the promises and threats from the supporters of Blackburn Rovers it looks as if it is falling on deaf ears. The truth is the Venkys are not responding in a reasonable manner; their attitude defies logic unless of course, they are unable to do anything. Most relegated clubs would be rigorously preparing for an immediate return to the Premier League; this is not the case at Ewood. In my memory no club is least prepared to hold its own in the Championship and my fear is that the club will be relegated again. The fault , of course, lies with the Venkys, Kean and possibly Anderson although in what proportions I do not know. I see no reason why Jack Straw could not give the supporters a few thoughts;maybe dare I say it some leadership! However, I suspect I am asking too much though.

Absolutely ridiculous appointment, whatever it is he has been appointed to do. Not unbelievable though, almost predictable in fact.

It is a fact in business people do well at a certain level and get promoted. This goes on until they get promoted to a job they can't do, something which happened a looooong time ago with Agnew; but he keeps getting the "promotions", such as they are. He must be able to say "Yes ma'am" perfectly in Hindi.

Kevin "7th Dan" Costner may just have to earn his corn next year - and I don't mean as "Stadium Manager".

That part should be easy as there won't be anyone to manage.

Paul? Steve? No, it's Spiro Agnew! Those of a certain age will remember him as Richard Nixon's Vice President of the USA (1969 - 1973).
There are uncomplimentarty comparisons; Nixon was impeached for his nefarious activities, perhaps the same will befall Kean!
This really is an appalling appointment. His credibility as CEO at PNE is shaky, to say the least. As a Press Officer he's been a disaster.
A General Manager, in my experience, is answerable to a Board, even if he sits on it.He carries out a Boards instructions. A General Manager is a long way from being a CEO, who drives and directs a Board and business.
What would be appreciated from the owners is a statement setting out his responsibilities; is he purely administrative? Does he oversee football? Does the manager (whoever he is) answer to him?
I'm afraid he will turn out to be a pathetic choice but presumably a proven football figure would not join and risk their name working with the Venkys.
This will do nothing to alleviate the fans worries nor, I'm afraid, instill confidence in the existing squad, which is diminishing by the day.

Any Rovers fans who will still go to the games next season and pay money to the owners, must be suffering from the footballing equivalent of beaten wife syndrome. How many more times are the Venkys going to arrogantly put two fingers up to the fans, and humiliate the fans before we tell them enough is enough.
-
This just compounds the pain I feel to see Kean still as manager (a manager 100% of Rovers fans want sacked), with the appointment of a new admin stooge to carry out orders in England.

If he didn't tell them this he wouldn't be doing his job as gm or as a rover as he claims to be, just a thought

Well done. Good post. My sentiments entirely.

Yea, very good post indeed and carrys all the relevant points that need answering...problem is of course, we, the fans, do not trust the new/settled in regime and management, so Agnew, like any other of the 'gang' is automatically not to be trusted unless he doe's something better than his lack of communication in his communication job!!! We do await with bated breath...again...but IF Colin Hendry becomes part of the team, then no matter who is at the relm...Mr K is staying...and I suspect he is not waiting any decisions with bated breath!!

Just when you think things couldn't get any worse these corrupt b4stards come up with another gem.

Please don't hold your breath....this bunch will not appoint anybody who will do anything remotely in the interests of developing the club.

This GM is there simply to rubber stamp any paperwork required (player transfers, staff redundancies, cancelled suppliers contracts, 25,000 blue plastic seats on e-bay) to extract every last bit of value more efficiently.

This will not get better until the club goes into administration and can be acquired only by somebody who cares about Blackburn, because there will be nothing left for a neutral to invest in. These immoral businessmen cannot sell the club because its value diminishes every second they are in charge. They won't let go until they have taken everything they can from out of Jacks legacy.

I will not invest another penny in the club that I have supported for 40 years until these charletans have gone.

Anderson - Kean - Venkys, you disgust me.

What we need is further wider media attention.
BRSIT / Blackburn United - call for a boycott now. Get it onto the sports pages.

The sooner people realise that there is clearly something else going on behind the scenes the better it will be..... the venkys seem nothing more than a front to what is actually going on behind the blue and white doors. I am sure you all have the same beliefs and the small majority that think that things can be turned around who will be crying once the club has been trashed completely. I seriously cannot wait to see the likes of Givet and others leave and spill the beans on what is actually going on (fingers crossed), as for sitting tight and hanging on.......no chance! Kean is going nowhere because he owns the club? You decide..........

I think we are all aware that something else is going on behind the scenes and have been for a considerable time but we can't get anyone to spill the beans so we are left with speculation amongst ourselves, and I wouldn't hold my breath on Givet or any other player coming out with the truth, the nearest we have got was Kieth Andrews saying basically the place was in a Bloody.

So, ARE you up to this ‘serious undertaking’ Mr Agnew? Are you going to TELL Venky’s they must sever all relations with Anderson/Kentaro/SEM /Zahavi?
Well done.
Very sad and sick times at BRFC.

Agnew says he cares about Blackburn Rovers. But does he? We'll soon find out.

I can see protest getting ugly when the season starts and these guys are going to get it badly by the fans.

We need the FA to listen to us and back us and ask or fouce them to sell this club.

VENKYS and mafia Out.
There needn't be a single banner or raised voice if Rovers fans would stand united in a complete boycott of Venkys team. DON’T GIVE THEM A SINGLE PENNY.
.
Now I know the greenest person in Darwen has been spouting that there is no need to start screaming hysterically, but if she is really honest she said exactly the same things to me before the beginning of last season when I said that if we don’t get rid of Venkys we would be relegated. If only I’d listened to her infinite wisdom.
TRUE FANS OF BLACKBURN ROVERS WOULD WANT WHAT IS BEST FOR THE CLUB. FUNDING THEIR INNEPT REGIME IS NOT WHAT IS BEST FOR THE CLUB. ANY FOOL WHO THINKS THEY ARE SUPPORTING THEIR CLUB BY PAYING TO WATCH THE FARCE THAT HAS BECOME VENKYS BLACKBURN ROVERS IS GOING TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CLUBS DECLINE FURTHER INTO THE MIRE.

Right you're on the list sonny. The only opinion allowed on here is:

Venkys Out
Kean Out
Agnew Out
Kentaro Out
Putthecat Out

Any actual support for a football club is verboten. If you want to do that go to the Dingles pages.

Tow the line or I'll get you barred
You're way out of line, start your own site if you want to behave like venkys.
Sorry I forgot I cant have a opinion I support my football team, whoever the manager or the owners..... As for the list " I am scared " You muppets....
