JAY Rodriguez could be on the verge of leaving Burnley, after the Clarets agreed a record breaking £7million fee with Southampton.

Saints have led the chase for the sought after striker since winning promotion back to the Premier League.

And they may have succeeded in fending off competition from a host of top flight teams, including Newcastle, Everton and Fulham, after getting the closest to Burnley's £8m asking price.

Personal terms have yet to be agreed, however.

Rodriguez is currently out of the country and has yet to meet with the south coast club's officials.

But Southampton will be hopeful of landing one of their prime targets, 12 months after having a £5m bid turned down.

Should the deal go ahead it would break the club's outgoing transfer fee record, set by Steven Fletcher two years ago.

The Scotland striker joined Wolves in a deal worth £6.5m.
