Kilby’s pride at Clarets stability

WINNING promotion to the Premier League, at Wembley, is an obvious highlight of Barry Kilby’s 13-year chairmanship.

But the 63-year-old describes establishing his beloved Burnley as a top two tier team is his biggest and best achievement.

The Clarets were struggling in the third tier – the old Second Division – when Kilby was welcomed on to the board in October 1998.

He was named Frank Teasdale’s successor two months later and appointed chairman.

On Valentine’s Day in his first full season, Burnley fans fell in love with their new leader as his £3million investment, which had made him the club’s biggest single shareholder, helped manager Stan Ternent tempt former England and Arsenal striker Ian Wright to Turf Moor.

“In some ways that Ian Wright signing was the one that lit the blue touchpaper for the rocket to take off,” smiled Kilby.

Burnley have never looked back since winning promotion, as runners up to Preston, at the end of that 1999/2000 campaign.

“When I came on to the board of directors in 1998 and became chairman two months later I think we had something like 15 years in the bottom tier of English football – the famous one when we nearly went out of the league altogether (in 1987),” said Kilby.

“So it had been a long time in the lower reaches, scratching around a little bit.

“Obviously what I am proud of now is that we got promotion in 2000 and we’ve been in the top two tiers of English football since then.

“I think people think of us in those terms; people think of Burnley FC slugging it out with big provincial English cities. It’s just natural now, so we are grouped there rather than the lower reaches of English football, which we were.”

He added: “When I look back to those early times to who was in the leagues then it’s absolutely frightening that there’s a whole bunch of them dropped out of even the Football League.

“There’s a whole bunch of them also that were seen to be better than us like, Bury, Stockport, Crewe. They were all in the Championship when we joined and have come down when we’ve managed to stay there.

“It’s not a spectacular highlight, like getting to the Premier League was, or winning a league, but I think it’s an achievement.

“I’m quite proud of that.”

Had it not been for the collapse of ITV Digital, Burnley may have got to the Premier League sooner than 2009. Just one goal denied them a place in the play-offs in 2002, before the financial rug was pulled from under them the following season.

But under Kilby’s leadership, aided by his astute managerial and boardroom appointments, Burnley have built themselves back up.

With Eddie Howe in charge of team affairs – Kilby’s fourth and final managerial appointment – they are in a position to challenge for the promised land again, sitting just three points outside the top six with 17 games to go.

“I’d take that now if you gave it to me. That would be fantastic wouldn’t it,” beamed Kilby at the prospect of another walk down Wembley Way.

“It’s a tall order but we’ve a chance. I’d love that.”

Sadly not spending enough money whilst in the Premiership in order to keep The Clarets there is obviously not one of his highlights nor was his appointment of Brian Laws. Nor was Eddie Howe having the rug pulled out from under his feet before this season had started by the sales of Eagles, Mears and Fox. This to me made a statement that the club had no intentions of getting promoted this season which would bring far more revenue into the club than they received from the sales of these players. I hope and pray that Barry will recover from his illness, but I will not be shedding a tear at his departure as Chairman. It is interesting to note that he is not standing down immediately and his succesor announced before the fans will be asked to renew their season tickets, something they could refuse to do if they were not happy at who will be the new man in charge. I rather suspect that Barry's succesor has already been decided and that he will come from within.

Cor I think you pseudonym should be "Grumpy".

Why do you keep banging the same old drum? This is neither the time nor the place for your moaning. It's time to lighten up and see what's in front of you and what BK did for the Clarets or do you prefer the dark days of 1986 again (mind you I wouldn't be surprised if you were'nt a supporter then).

Not only did BK put his money where his mouth was but he helped to stabilise the club's finances, enable us to have our year in the sun and has been a true Claret through and through. It is because of his help that we have a young vibrant manager and squad who perhaps are still learning about each other but will become a great force to be reckoned with.

Yes like any decision maker he has made mistakes (have you never made any, or do you walk on water). His has always been for the future of BFC and it is a bright one now.

You must agree overall that it has been far better to have BK at the helm of the Board this past few years. Or would you sooner have the Chuckle Brothers down the road?

So come on lighten up, get behind BK and the club and stop harping on about the recent past

Not "grumpy" vintageclaret but I got rid of my "claret and blue" coloured spectacles a long time ago when Bob Lord sold our top players. In my opinion Barry Kilby is Bob Lord in disguise and it is about time that Clarets fans wake up and smell the coffee otherwise nothing will change and we will be having the same discussion twenty years down the line and if recent events are anything to go by the team will STILL be in the Championship. Regarding the "Chicken-coupers" down the M65 at least they have stayed in the Premiership longer than ONE season. Just to remind you as if you needed reminding: Norwich City have exceeded our total of 30points in the Premiership by two and Swansea City are just one point behind our total with still just under half of the season remaining. The board and chairman at BFC need to hang their heads in shame. It is time for a change and it is time to bring new blood and ideas into the club. I don't see Man City fans complaining do you?

Cut part of your response out so thread doesn't get too long.

I wear variofocal glasses which are certainly not rose or C&B tinted and at the moment I am drinking a cup of coffee which is quite strong with a delicious odour which is probably why I can put 'Today' in perspective to 'Yesterdays'. BFC have always been a selling club and yes I can remember as a young apprentice my shock at hearing Jimmy Mac had been sold to Stoke which lessened over the years with sales such as Dobbo, Connelly, Morgan Coatesy, Thomas, Morley et al.
The reality is that with such a small drawing base to attract fans coupled with the obvious dislike of BFC from the media we will never be able to act like Man UTD/C/Arsenal/Chelse
a. looking at the Chuckle Bros fiasco down the road would we really want to?

I don't think EH,JT and such as Trippier, Mee, Edgar, Hines, Stanislas, JayRod, Easton, Austin, Ings,McCann would like being called 'Old Blood' do you? Time brings changes and with it the old Maxim "Please some of the people etc" springs to mind and judging from your bitter sounding comments about BK it would seem you have a personal axe to grind. Did you lose one of your lottery tickets?

Judging from your remembrance of Bob Lord (I knew him personally and you had to understand his character to understand his philosophy which was C&B through and through). So as you reach the autumn of your life stop seeing the bare wooded trees and see spring, consider your cup as half full (my coffee is now) not half empty, just smile (less tiring than frowning) and be happy that we have a club with such a fantastic history and is now headed for further glory thanks to BK and his ilk

Claretmeandyou. More like Claretme..I'm not sure about you! What utter nonsense you spout, this is the modern era of football and unfortunately a small town club like Burnley simply cannot compete with big money, big city teams. To compare us to Man City is laughable. With regard to Swansea they are fortunate enough to have a very good Manager but there record transfer fee is just £3.5m for Danny Graham and despite half a season in the Prem they have just announced a losses for the year of £8.2million, they could be in a spot of bother if Brendan Rogers get's poached. As for Norwich they have been bank rolled by Delia before now but actually they are much healthier financially, it is a City with 350,000 residents (Burnley has 73,000) thus they are able to fill there 27,000 seater stadium quite easily and they charge accordingly; £43 for Grade A games - at an average ticket price of £35 quick maths tell us that they make an extra £385k per game versus what Burnley could realise when we were in the Prem. Even when in the 3rd tier their average attendance was 23,500 - so again the comparison is somewhat laughable and typical of ill judging critics like you. This is not 1965 when every player gets paid the same and the foreign superstar is from the far flung County Down. When Barry Kilby took over our club we were 3rd from bottom of the 3rd tier in a league division shared by the likes of Wrexham, York, Lincoln and Luton! We have since seen Ian Wright and Gazza in Claret & Blue, been on the brink of a League Cup Final, Beaten the 3rd richest and arguably the greatest football team in history 1 nil at Turf Moor and have now entered a new era with excellent training ground facilities, a youth team in the last 8 of the FA Youth Cup for the first time for 36 years, a brilliant young manager with a wealth of assets born of a side with an average age of just 23 and just 3 points from the play-offs. Yes we may sell a player or two in the ever more £££ world of football but we are not Rovers, we are not Preston or Portsmouth, we are healthy and vibrant, we are Burnley Football Club. You may have guessed by now, following this rant, that you have made my blood simmer with your comments so I will leave you in no doubt that it is my belief that Mr Barry Kilby is undoubtedly one of the most important men in the history of our club. Thank you Mr Kilby...my children and my grandchildren will be told!!!

Claretmeandyou, Your judgement is terrible - Kilby has been a fantastic Chairman, done a brilliant job, with time he will be looked on as a legend.

Phew Claretmeandyou.

Your comments have certainly raised the ire of some of our fellow supporters especially Howe2win.

Deep down I think you probably have the same cause as ourselves but you do come over as a pessimist living in years gone by. So I'll say to you life is too short to be bitter, chill out and enjoy the moment and just get behind the team, EH/JT and count your lucky stars (if you really are a true supporter of BFC) that we have been graced by Mr. Kilby as our Chairman who truly is a gent in every sense of the word besides being modest, sensitive and aware of Claret fans fervour for the club. Reach out and say a little prayer or two for him, his family and all who are suffering in the same way.

Dear Claretmeandyou,

Barry Kilby is one of the greatest chairmen we have ever had. If it hadn't been for him, we would have got nowhere near the premiership. It is obvious when you listen to him that he is Claret and blue through and through and that he has only the best interests of the club at heart.

Burnley Football Club, more than any other club in the country, is right to be cautious and remember what pain stupid decisions can cause. I remember the early 80s when we had a great young team and then brought in a manager who sold them all in exchange for older "tried and tested" players who ended up taking us down two divisions and nearly into oblivion.

We can compete at the highest level if we have an extremely rich benefactor, or we have another chairman like Mr. Kilby who will always put the club first and , little by little, make sure that everything is in place so that we can compete. I think this is being done very well and whoever takes over will have a lot to thank Barry for.

I am sure that the majority of Burnley fans are happy with the way things are going. We'll be back in the premiership before long but it will be the way we have always done things- in our own time and in our own way. Wanting things too quickly or too much can be dangerous-just ask Horwich or woevers fans!! Our getting to the premiership or being an established top two tier club is a miracle and a credit to Barry Kilby!

Howe2win's comment pretty much sums up our success. Not sure what planet you are living on Claretmeandyou? Barry Kilby has performed miracles with limited resources. I am proud of the club's achievments under BK and would not like to be back where we were before he took over. UTC
