STEVE Kean has urged El-Hadji Diouf to let his football do the talking after admitting he doesn’t understand why his midfielder seems to crave being hated.

Rovers controversial Senegalese international was at the centre of an FA Cup storm after QPR boss Neil Warnock launched a verbal personal attack on him , alleging Diouf taunted broken leg victim Jamie Mackie.

Diouf has since hit back at the allegations, insisting he said nothing to Mackie, with Kean admitting the club is still investigating exactly what happened last weekend.

Kean said: “ When you sit and talk to him, he has a bubbly personality he is always happy, he is never down. When he goes on the pitch, he enjoys people booing him. I don't know why, I can't get it in my head.

“It excites him and the ideal scenario for him is he comes off the pitch just before the end and he can hold his hands out and wave to the away fans.

“We hope he can put into a box the nasty part that infuriates people and let his football do the talking.

“It is the thing that gives him a buzz. But it brings baggage, it is hard to deal with for us and we will be trying to minimise it without taking away from his ability.”

While Diouf is the Premier League’s public enemy number one after a series of incidents over the years, Kean insists off the pitch he is a different person.

“We speak with staff after games and we say he seems a nasty character but when you actually have him in your training ground, work with him, he is not,” said Kean.

“There have been a number of times when he has come into the manager’s office after a game and there are members of staff having a drink after the game. When he walks out, they say he seems really nice.

“The first thing about last weekend is when the two lads were lying on the deck no one knew how serious the injuries were.

“After it when you find out he has broken his leg, that is really, really fortunate but at that time we didn't know who was hurt. What added to Neil Warnock’s rage was he was told towards the end of the match his player had suffered a double fracture.

“He probably took that into the press conference. I am trying to piece together why he was like he was and that was probably why.”
