SUPER sub Rory Boulding has described his first Football League goal as a ‘special moment’.
The 22-year-old Accrington Stanley striker came off the bench late in the second half to earn a point against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.
The Reds had earlier conceded for the first time in the league this season, when Matt Bloomfield put the visitors ahead in the 66th minute.
But just when it looked as though time was running out for John Coleman’s men to extend their unbeaten start to this League Two campaign, Boulding fired in a late leveller.
“I have been scoring goals in reserve games for the last four years and never really had a chance to get on and score in the league, so it’s definitely special,” said the former Mansfield and Bradford City striker, who signed a one-year deal in the summer.
Wycombe scored against the run of play, but then piled on the pressure for the rest of the game, and Boulding admitted it was a relief not to lose a game they should have won.
“We battered them for the first 45 minutes,” he said.
“We were all over them, creating loads of chances, and then we seemed to lose our initiative and they could have scored two or three more.
“But we had phases and we had to get forward ourselves and were a bit more exposed at the back.
“I sat on the bench itching to come on, and when I did I was just looking for an opportunity and thankfully it came.
“It was important to keep the unbeaten run going.”
Coleman added: “I think for an hour we took the game to them. We were on the front foot, made plenty of chances and were just lacking a goal, and then we hit a brick wall.
“For 20 minutes they were the better team. They scored in that period, which we hadn’t in our hour, but fair play to the lads they’ve got a little bit of character about them.
“What’s happened to Wycombe, I lost count of the amount of times it happened to me last season.
“On the balance of the game I think we probably deserved a point.”
