Big Sam: Blackburn Rovers have performed miracles

SAM Allardyce believes Blackburn Rovers have performed miracles during his Ewood Park tenure after admitting his squad’s development has exceeded all expectations.

The Rovers boss admits he has been disappointed by the lack of funds available this summer but was quick to emphasise the huge strides he believes have been taken during the past couple of years.

Rovers were the only Premier League club not to pay a transfer fee this summer, with Mame Biram Diouf arriving on loan and free agent Benjani signing, leaving a section of supporters frustrated by the inactivity.

After leading his side to a creditable top half Premier League finish last season though, Allardyce believes there is every reason to be optimistic as they look to build on recent progress.

He said: “Like every manager you are disappointed you can’t bring more in but that is a fact of life at the moment.

"But, in terms of development time, I would say we are at least 12 months ahead of where I thought we would be when I first came.

“The main aim then was to keep the club in the Premier League and then to resolve its financial difficulties.

"That left us in a very difficult position in terms of producing a good side for Blackburn Rovers. We have managed to do that.

“We have put the financial side straight by accumulating £30million plus in the transfer market.

"We have gone out and spent wisely around £12m or £14m and have left a massive profit for the club.

“To get this far in 20 months with the trials and tribulations we have had has been pretty miraculous.

"It is a position I am delighted to say we are way, way above where I considered to be.”

A lot of Rovers’ success over the past 12 months can be put down to their youth revolution, with several of their academy starlets breaking into the first team.

They have also managed to unearth some ‘bargain signings, like French midfielder Steven Nzonzi, but Allardyce knows their task does not get any easier.

“We have promoted some very good players and we have improved the players who are already here and that has catapulted us towards being a more sound solid squad than I thought,” said Allardyce.

“What we have to do now is keep going out and proving it and keep improving by the results we get, which is always very difficult because we have spent less than anybody else.

“We have progressed so far in the last few months there are a number of sides we should be beating.

"We shouldn’t struggle so much although that doesn’t mean we don’t guard against that and guard against potential complacency."

Despite a lack of funds, Allardyce has had the luxury of picking from a strong squad so far this season, with last season’s player of the year missing out due to the strength in depth.

Allardyce said: “It is about a strong healthy squad and about me managing the squad and managing the disappointment of some of my players. That is my job.

“It is a hard job but one you have to manage. If someone can’t cope or put up with it there are two windows for that to change and you look into moving them on.

“At this moment in time it is about the players who are selected. It is their responsibility to play so well you can’t get the shirt off them.

"The responsibility of the other lads is to be patient, wait for their turn and grab that chance when they get the shirt.

“Then make sure you don’t lose it by playing well. That is healthy competition in a strong squad we have developed over 20 months."

i can think of one player who needs developing more and that is junior hoillet. his delivery and final product are poor at the momnet but if someone works with him he could become a real threat. like rovers version of wallcot or lennon but without the injury problems (touch wood).

As ive said numerous times before, im very impressed and proud of the team that has cost relatively little to assemble and its achievements.

Big Sam isnt given enough credit by some of the rovers fans, what he has achieved is fantastic considering the resources he has and the size of the club.

I'd like to see him given a decent run in the side. Sadly I don't think he fits our current style of play!

I like his pace but he is very lightweight and lacks that bit extra when on the ball.I to would like o see him progress into the team because he would provide something we lack but at the moment he's not good enough.

Miller what are you on?? That was yet another dig at Sam and our supposed "hoof ball" tactics...what a load of tosh!! Hoilett is a good player but the only reason he hasn't played is because the attcking midfielders currently in possession of the shirt have played really well!! Pedersen, m diouf, e diouf and even olsson in small bursts have been great!!

Hoilett's best position is a striker in my opinion. We play 1 up top. He is too small for that, particularly getting on the end of long balls, and holding it up with his back to goal. That should be blindingly obvious.

...oh, and he's missed a few vital chances chances when 1 on 1 with the keeper!
Hoillet is not getting a start because he is not ready yet, the system we play has nothing to do with it. He could play in the Dunn role if he was dominant enough, he could play wide in the same mould as Olssen if he was mature enough, or he could be the first option as and when we play two up front, which will be quite often this season. The problem is, much as our side would benefit from his pace, in whatever position, Hoillet has not yet shown enough strength, discipline, maturity or finishing prowess to warrant a place. From what I can see, Rovers staff are working hard to develop these attributes, and he will get there eventually, but he is not there yet.

No chance is he a striker. He can't finish. Never has been able to according to someone who played in the youth teams with him.

I like him as a winger because he's not afraid to run at people and take them on. But his final deliver definitely does need work.

A very fair summary by Sam of the frustrations and safisfaction of being Rovers' current manager in my opinion.

.

To me, it beggars belief that there are still critics of the job he is doing. Like everyone else I will be pleased when we can adopt a more expansive, attacking style of football but I marvel at the job Sam is doing with the resources he has at his disposal.

.

I am delighted that Sam is not making noises about moving on because of a lack of financial support from the boardroom and that he will be around, hopefully, to superintend the development of the squad when and if we have a little more money to play with.

BFS has done a tremedous job since he has arrived, spending very little money and being forced to sell some very good players. To take Rovers to 10th last season was remarkable. long may it continue.

I see Rovers are about to give Chimbonda a contract extension,is this going to be another player who never plays that we can't get rid of.

Miller11 - We are doing OK for a small club but I am with you - our footy is hardly a miracle to watch but more like chewing carboard!
.
Big Sam is one hell of a self publicist though - give him that? Do you think he should be given the £100m (if it comes off) or thanks for your service and get a better manager in who will entertain? Its the latter for me because a cardboard diet is disgusting!

Looks like BFS starting to blow his own sizeable trumpet again, just like he did at Bolton. Next he will start thinging he's bigger than the club, just like he did at Bolton and start touting himself for the England job, just like he did at Bolton. His hugh ego is his downfall.

Ironically, some interpret this as Sam 'blowing his own trumpet'.
The reality is that he is simply reminding the less astute supporters what a great position our club is in. He knows that the fact that we haven't spent money in the transfer window will make the more negative, muppetty fans think that we are in a mess. In the same way that, in the likely event that we lose against the richest team in the world this weekend, all the anti-Sam brigade will be out in force, just the same as they were last season, making themselves feel good, but look daft in one fell swoop.
I'm sorry if this post offends, gents, but it is, indeed, the TRUTH.

Sam has appointed a very good staff , and that is the sign of a good manager.
he hasn't been here for 2 seasons yet.
the team was on the rocks when he came . the wage bill was stupid.
anyone can wave a cheque book , but it takes brains to get a team together on little money.
he has built from the back , which is the logical way to do it.
the last piece of the puzzle is to sort out the strikers , which is where we are now.
lots more youngsters are in development , which is the long term plan. ( look at the squad numbers)
