Nelson's junior golf champs dominate win at home

NELSON’S youngsters proved too strong for their rivals by dominating the ELGA Junior Championship at their home club on Tuesday.

The championship has served up competitive scoring since its inception in 1962 and this year’s event proved no different as a field of 50 boys fought for the prestigious title.

Sam Reeves, the son of former Nelson PGA professional Neil Reeves, took home the trophy by firing 71 to win by one shot.

The 17-year-old edged out runner-up and club-mate Curtis Clarkin, while Sam Townend of Wilpshire came third with 73.

Nelson’s boys also stole the honours in the nett trophy, won by 11-year-old Joe Flanagan (89-26-63), two shots ahead of club-mate Declan Bush (78-13-65), while Pleasington’s Daniel Simm finished third (74-8-66).

Shooting a nett 65, Bush was the first competitor out in the morning and led all day long until victory was snatched by Flanagan who, ironically, was the last boy out.

Last year’s champion, Wilpshire’s Ben Ewan, 18, was unable to defend his title with competition rules specifying that juniors taking part had to be aged 17 or under on January 1, 2010. Reeves and Clarkin are two of five Nelson members that will represent ELGA Boys over the next fortnight in a series of fixtures against their Lancashire Union of Golf Club rivals.

Also included in the 14-strong squad are Nelson’s Ben Short, Craig Waddington and Niall Ormerod, the Whalley trio of Tom Tuley, Scott Byrom and Aaron Ripley, and Clitheroe duo Tom Forrest and Alex Procter. Wilpshire’s Harry Devine, Josh Henderson of Blackburn and Rossendale’s Joel Duncan are also included, with Marsden Park’s Nathan Lingard picked as captain.

ELGA Boys first take on Bury and District at Pike Fold on Tuesday.
