Burnley boss: Marney is bargain of season

BURNLEY manager Brian Laws believes he may have unearthed the “bargain of the season” in summer signing Dean Marney.

The midfielder, who is understood to have cost the Clarets’ just £350,000, is the first of four new faces to have so far arrived at Turf Moor since the end of last term.

This week he enhanced an already promising pre-season with two goals in their penultimate friendly.

Marney was at the double as Burnley came back from 2-0 down in a behind-closed doors game with Accrington Stanley, after the annual meeting at the Crown Ground had to be called off due to pitch complications.

The 26-year-old preserved an unbeaten pre-season run with a well-guided, looping header and a tidy finish after their League Two neighbours took a 2-0 lead into the break.

But it wasn’t the only warm-up game in which Marney has had a strong influence.

The former Hull City midfielder put in some particularly industrious performances on the tour of Singapore, which led to goals for fellow newcomer Chris Iwelumo and twice for Chris Eagles before he got among the goals himself in their first game back on home soil.

“I think Dean could turn out to be the bargain of the season,” said Laws.

“He has impressed everybody since he came here with his energy, drive and workrate, and obviously he can score goals.

“He is a player who can play wide but centrally is his best position.”

Burnley go into their final friendly, against Stoke City tomorrow (kick-off 3pm at Huddersfield Town), boasting 18 goals and eight different goalscorers.

Marney’s brace means all three of Laws’ new outfield players have been on the scoresheet this summer.

Ross Wallace scored the Clarets’ first goal of the summer on his debut against Bury. Iwelumo missed a penalty in the next game at Oldham, but scored three goals in two games on tour.

“We've been happy with the newcomers,” added the Burnley boss.

Oh Dear. The Wallsend Wally really has taken leave of his senses.

Send for the straightjacket and the men in white coats.

Dean Marney "bargain of the season"? Have you ever heard anything more ridiculous?

If we didn't already know, we know now. Laws has completely lost the plot and gone do-lally.

Transferred from one relegated club to another and Hull fans dont rate him. Sounds like plain commonsense that hes not up to much : and that is clearly factored into his market value.Although that managerial genuis Brian Laws may have pulled off the bargain of the century - i doubt it somehow.
Apologies for pulling my head out of the sand in this way;-) As for Deadwood : i rarely go there but it is hosting Premier League soccer for 17 out of 19 years with visitors such as Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City etc .Meanwhile Burnley are visting places such as Scunthorpe, Doncaster, Cardiff etc with exciting games at that well known cauldron rapidly becoming known as Turf Morgue;-)

Why bother?

errr because we support burnley win lose or draw whatever league we play in; supporting, in our understanding, entails actually turning up at your clubs football ground week in week out and singing your heart out for the lads, rather than just commenting on a place we know nothing about on an internet news site!!

Doesn't even watch the Clampetts in the prem., hates one particular club but doesn't even support one, and to cap it all calls football soccer. Probably never kicked a ball in his life either. A sad man(?).

whatever REALLY goes on at gawthorpe after training - is not going to stop us supporting our team so give it up and get lost; in case you can't tell, nobody cares for your comments or opinions on BFC - I wonder how you are so in the know given it appears that you never leave your PC...??!!

So.... Tetley is finally admitting he is actually a rover. About time. So now maybe you can do us all a favour and keep your comments on a page where people might actually give a f@&k what you think about OUR team. Nontetley, love the humour my friend.

I am on the right page. If you dont give a f**k then why do you reapond? A lot of this is not humour : its hard fact whether you like it or not. The truth about whats going on at Turf Moor will ALL come out one day, as some of it already has, its only a matter of time.

Now get down to Turf Morgue and hand over yer £512 cash for a n-power season ticket to that nice, philanthropic chap Brendan Flood.
You know what I mean dont you?

Oh dear another post from Tetley making veiled accusations and insinuations about the running of BFC.
.
His next post will be his sanctimonious claptrap about people "always avoiding the point" or being abusive means they can't stand up to his arguements!
.
How long before Teley changes his name (again!)?

Ive never changed my name. Be patient : theres more to come about shenanigans behind the sacenes at the Turf. In the meantime make a few inquiries as to why 5,000 have not renewed their season tickets and ask some older Clarets about Bob Lord and what went on in the 60s and 70s. You will be astounded;-)

To be fair, love or hate Laws I personally think that we will have a competative line up for the new season.

The board have stood by Laws, now maybe we should all give the guy a chance. Laws never stood a chance last season of keeping us up.

He has now put his stamp on the team. They all seem keen to play. i think we'll have Eagles until at least January, then his future will be decided.

its looking again that we have a ver attack orientated squad.

Give them a chance, we dont want boo boys so early. If we are struggling after 10 games then have a re think about Laws. But until then, the more they have our support the better.

Who knows, we may end up worshiping the guy if he gives us a good season. And i tell you what Laws would not jump ship and abandon us if an offer came along. He has to much of a history with this place.

One critical point, i would like another striker, although they are hard to come by at the right price. And if we could get Cork in the squad, i'd be more than happy.

Get behind Laws and the team starting now! UTC

The point people are trying to make mr tetley is the one i've made all week but its like banging my head against a brick wall with you; if you don't like BFC or care for them why concern yourself with their matters or try to hound loyal fans into changing their opinions/allegiances
; supporting your team has nothing to do with reason, it's not a personal choice, it's not something that you can just chop and change at the drop of a hat, BFC is for life & if you don't like it then take your vile clap trap elsewhere because we're all sick to death of your comments; we want to have reasonable conversations with fellow clarets, or failing that, fellow football fans on these BFC articles not cynical/angry/bitter
/negative haters

Could it be because we aren't in the Premership this season? You know nothing about what goes on at the Turf! and to try to compare the manner in which the club is run today with the management under Bob Lord is just mischief making!

Who in their right mind would offer Laws a job now he has relegated TWO teams in just ONE season?

So does that mean that Owen Coyle has had one team relegated from the premeirship and Alan Irvine wasn't the manager of a team relegated from the Championship?

It has been pointed out to "tetley" before, that last season over 7,000 season tickets were given away free as part of the club's Premiership Pledge. If only 5,000 have not renewed, this equates to an INCREASE in sales on last season. You would expect a drop in crowd size at most clubs after a relegation season, but we are going to have substantially higher gates than in our promotion season. But "tetley" prefers to ignore that, and keep his head stuck in the 60's and 70's.

im not bitter or twisted. Really the truth about whats going on behind the scenes at Turf Morgue will come out one day. Fact is 5,000 have not renewed and thats not just due to relegation : dont forget they were all previous season-ticket holders pre-Prem. The free tickets are to cover up/divert attention from whats going on and avoid the sheer embarrassment of 12-13,000 gates in the Prem : a re-run of the mid 70s again.
