Allardyce admits to striker shortage at Blackburn Rovers

SAM Allardyce has revealed his frustrations over Blackburn Rovers’ search for a striker after watching his side lose 3-0 to Preston last night.

The Rovers boss revealed his bid to boost Rovers’ fire power was becoming more of a headache.

With Jason Roberts and Nikola Kalinic both injured for last night’s match, Allardyce was forced to field Junior Hoilett as a lone striker, emphasising his need for reinforcements.

He said: “The search is not going great at the moment unfortunately.

"It is getting ever more difficult but we will just have to keep on plugging away and see what turns up either tomorrow or before the transfer window shuts.

“I am not going to settle for what I have got. If I can’t get a striker then I will go elsewhere and get a midfield player.

"But we would like to have a midfield player and a striker.

"I have to find the striker first and then see.

“There aren’t as many live targets as good as there were a few weeks ago.

"The targets we identified have come and gone but there is nothing we could hang our hat on just yet.

“Like everything else it is a very difficult market now.

"The World Cup has shown you that. The world stage of football hasn’t produced much in terms of great footballers for me.

“That means there is a dearth of them and that is why they are getting ever more expensive.

"Most of them are in the Premier League already. We have to look all over Europe and try and get one as quickly as possible.”

What a pi55 take. How have targets come and gone? Id love to know who these targets were, one was obviously Dindane - who even had a medical.

Have to agree with SA's assessment of last eve at Preston. Preston deserved the win with some good slick football. That said BRFC played some good stuff in parts & not, apart from Robbo who was playing keep ball with his opposite number, lumping the ball !!

Riechter(spelt incorrectly) certainly as that turn of speed but, runs into walls. Although he did have a couple of good shots on target. He will do well to trouble any Prem defence !!

Poor, poor marking for 1 & 2 goals but, hey this is pre-season & just the sort of game to give SA & staff food for thought.

I expected a low turn out for the game but, the fans turned out in numbers & in good voice for the season ahead.

Does any-one know if no 14 was the trialist ? He was Di-Santo in disguise !!

T'up Rovers :)

Arte et labore

Hmmm - Sec-Word: VERY RICH !! I think not :(

Oops my apologies it wasn't who I stated above but, Hoillet up front alone !! Hope he can trouble Prem defence's this season !!

My eyes are ain't what they used to be. That said I thought Chimbonda was a new signing with his 'hair bear bunch' hairstyle !!

Yikes !! :)

Sam's been trying to sign players since the tale end of last season you fool?!.. Do you not think that if he could have signed the players he wanted then they would have by now?

How can he sign anyone half decent when we have no money!.. It's not the managers fault, it's the owners fault and a lack of investment.

Yeah and he would cost like 12-15 million!... So no chance... The board need to borrow money from the bank to invest in a new striker, then once he's been signed recuperate the money by selling the likes of Grella, Brown and Judge.

The question I still have is what happened to this extra money from finishing 10th that we was promised. People keep saying that nobodt knows except the board what is available but we cant got that extra money as with that as well we should havce at least 4m including the money saved on wages for McCarthy and Steven Reid to spend which should get us a striker. It is starting to look like we are awaiting for the takeover to happen before we spend, and if that is the case then would seem promising that something will happen. But downside is if it does collapse we have missed out on all the best targets in our current budget

Rover23 says...

If we don't sign someone soon we are going to end up with Benjani! and nobody wants that!! mind you.. would'nt be suprised if he was gone by deadline day and Sam will be saying "it is unfortunate we havnt signed anyone.. but our targets went elsewhere"

Why are people knocking Sam's transfer deals and the way the club sets about bringing players in? They have been superb so far.

.

Sam did not want to buy Boyd and I would back his judgment over any amateur on here. Ditto Benjani, Dindane, Nugent, Raul etc etc.

.

The club does not have a magic wand. We can't lay out fortunes on transfer fees or salaries (Both Man U and Spurs are linked with Raul for instance).

.

Why can't fans accept that the club is doing its best in a difficult market instead of perpetually moaning? Perhaps some people get some sort of perverse kick out of moaning all the time? Weird.

.

We had a great season last season with the squad we have now. Any improvements would be welcome but hardly of the paramount importance that some fans would make out.

.

Let's just be patient and see what Sam and the Board have up their respective sleeves.

I think as fans we have the right to be concerned. Every club needs players in even just to keep current squad on their toes. Quote someone earlier who mentioned losing all preseason and winning the league, well also remember the season after where we only bought Matty Holmes and Adam Reed and we struggled as we didnt have the players good enough to challenge what we already have. We proved last season that we have had trouble to turn 1 point into 3 and we cant go into next season with the same.

Darener - where did i say we were going to win the prem next season - my point is that results in pre-season friendlies are no guide to form in the league.....the games are pre-season friendlies....that is what they are called and that is what they are.
.
the 1995 point illustrates that performances in july are no guide to performances from mid-august to early may.
.
if we get beat 3-0 by preston in either the league cup, or fa cup - i think you, and the rest, will have cause to be concerned. even i may be storming the barricades.
.
don't get me wrong there are some shortcomings in our team - but ask any preston fan, who they would rather be looking forward to watching next season (obvious loyalties aside) and i think we know the answer.
.
i would rather see kalanic develop than treacy.
.
i don't take any medication.

I make no apologies for being a Rovers fan and living abroad. I regret not being able to attend more than a handful of games per year - but that is my problem.

.

Of course everybody has a right to moan. I just wonder why people choose to moan when the Club is doing its best and keeping the fans in the picture.

.

Moaning is infectious and spreads discontent amongst those fans who are waverers. It is easy to jump on the bandwagon and then we end up with the sort of barracking of our own players which, personally, I think is disgraceful and which I never did during the decades I spent watching Rovers home and away at places such as Grimsby, Millwall and Carlisle.
