Allardyce: Blackburn Rovers have our very own John Terry

SAM Allardyce has urged England to give Ewood Park hero Phil Jones a chance – after admitting Blackburn Rovers could have their own John Terry on their hands.

The 18-year-old centre-back was a colossus on his Premier League debut yesterday as El-Hadji Diouf’s 69th-minute header dented Chelsea's title hopes by earning Rovers a 1-1 draw with the star-studded Londoners.

Didier Drogba’s sixth-minute opener suggested an injury-hit Rovers were set for a hiding but, led by centre back Jones, Sam Allardyce’s men bravely battled back to edge closer to Premier League survival.

Jones, who was withdrawn from Rovers’ under 18s squad at Stamford Bridge tonight in the FA Youth Cup semi final second leg, was thrust into Premier League action for the first time due to injuries to Gael Givet and Ryan Nelsen.

He had already impressed in cup games this campaign but Allardyce insists yesterday’s display from the Chorley-born defender proves England’s youth selectors have to give him his chance.

Allardyce said: “We have said before he looks a little like John Terry in his body language and he had a great Premier League debut.

“We did recommend him to the England under 19s and they have taken some notice.

"We are telling them what a good player he was and he should be playing at that level for England.

“He has a long way to go to get to the standard of being a regular Premier League player though.

"He is on the right track by doing what he did today.

“It is nice when you see a player that excites you like that, particularly when you used to be a centre half like myself.”

Rovers struggled to cope with Chelsea’s pace and power in the opening exchanges but, after holding firm following Drogba’s opener, had a go at their visitors after the break.

Allardyce said: “The decision to play Phil comes easier when Ryan and Gael are injured but we have seen him play in the first team this year and do very, very well, particularly at Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

“Seeing a young lad from Chorley do that, a lot of credit to our academy.

"We all talk about how few players we develop and part of Blackburn’s success story will be developing people like Phil Jones and more of them.

“We have got Olsson and Hoilett, which is pretty good, and Phil is another coming through.

"I am pleased with the overall performance.

"We had a lot of injuries to cope with and people have come in and played their part and not weakened the side in any way.”

Well done Phil Jones.

.

You have an immensely bright future if you keep learning and working and don?t get carried away with the praise that is rightly coming your way.

.

All credit to Sam for having the guts to throw you into yesterday's game.

The LT doesn't half twist quotes from people.
.
I am not Allardyce's biggest fan, but "he looks a little like John Terry in his body language and he had a great Premier League debut" is not WE HAVE OUR VERY OWN JOHN TERRY.
.
Talk about keeping the lads feet on the ground. Let's acknowledge he had a fabulous debut, but one swallow doesn't make a summer and all that. Don't get me wrong - praise the lad, his play and his attitude. But the world is full of Billy-big-b0llox who promised a lot at 18.
.
I wish him well, really do, and every club's supporters love seeing a good young 'un come through into the first XI and make a do of it (Dunn, Duff and Wilcox being the best examples for us) but let us manage expectation. The models of young players coming through is best when you look at Giggs and Rooney, rather than the likes of Sharpe and Pennant.
.
Let's hope we (Rovers) do the right thing by him and pray that we have found something that might be precious.
.
Onwards and Upwards!

...didn't Marlon Broomes make his debut against Chelsea (or was that Jay McEveley)?
All good stuff though, if Kalinic, Olsson, Hoillet, Nzonzi and now Jones can all continue their development, the future looks very bright!!
One thing Sam seems very aware of is how best to nurture these lads, assessing each one on his merits and not rushing them through at risk of destroying their confidence.

On a general note - why are we playing Wed night? This should be about derby week and our second most important game of the season.
.
I would have liked to see us full of energy and concentrating on tactics for that game rather than playing Birmingham especially after NZonzie seemed to get cramp yesterday?
.
Disciplinary action against the person responsible for this fixture! We will need to be 100% to expose Burnley's weaknesses at the back and prey on their nerves.
.
Jeppo - hope you liked my positive posts - I still got stick lol.

I agree that players need to be nursed into the team and their is a very delicate balance in how you go about it.Nzonzi grows with every match and doesn't looks older than his years,Hoillet howaever always looks like first team football is a step to far.Olsson looks like he's been over protected and thus has developed slowly I see his future in midfield because he is a very poor full back,I think Jones could be accomadated anywhere in the back four after a performance any thing less than a place on the bench would be a crime. The youngster I feel sorrry for at the moment is Kalinic we are in danger of breaking his spirit,I'm not advocating two up front but midfield has got to give him more support,I'm afraid Dunn can no longer play the role for more than 30 mins if that. With the players coming through the future looks bright lets hope it turns out that way.

Morst...indeed, your more positive approach is appreciated, thank you! If all goes well, I'm sure we'll get to the level of football that you demand, but it will take a while, and it will take some pain along the way, thats the only way it can be for a club like ours (unless you go the Portsmouth way!)
It hasn't gone unnoticed that some others have even showed signs of turning the corner, Hasslem has even come close to praising Sam and Diouf in recent posts (tho not Salgado, yet) and the viscious critic that is Marghen even seems to have mellowed, he is now electing to predict 37 points for the season!! I can only assume that B&B and Blackburn Yoof have committed suicide.
Ironically, all this new emotion seems to have sent Eddie and even myself into more of a negative view - thats the problem with realists, I suppose!! Come on Eddie, lets try to snap out of this 'anti-midfielders' trait...what position did you play in your prime?

JEPPO:To answer your question I played any position where I could get a game I the first name on the team sheet and no subs in my day if you didn't start you didn't play.
My so called obsession with midfield is based on the fact that because of a lack of talent and fitness we have no alternative but to play one up front a formation that requies midfielders to take advantage of the extra man and get forward behind Kalinic while regrouping quickly to defend when we lose the ball. This is something we fail to do and because of a lack of pace and knowhow we don't seem to improve. That is why I think some of the familiar names that the fans cling to will be on their way,I believe in Sams ability in the market to move us forward but it might not be overnight.Seeing that you pick the team I presume you play where you like I hope your not the one up front on his own.

ha ha, I was reading that and wondering! Yeh I pick the team, so I'll always be in the eleven, no fear of that!!
You'll not be surprised to hear that I am an 'average' central midfield player, with no pace, and basically, my game is scrambling around, stopping the opposition and giving the ball to players that CAN play - every team needs one, eh!!
It'll also be no surprise to you that I agree 100% with what you say above, and likewise, my comment on the other page that there will be at least one 'surprise' departure in the Summer shows we are thinking similar. We have got too many similar players, so I'd imagine that if we get a decent offer for one of our senior midfielders, we will take the maximum money, and trade him in for a flare/pace player more akin to Olsson and Dunny.

There could be a future problemo but, if handled with kid groves by Mr Allardyce it could turn into the clubs favour …Olson is a good young prospect but, he isn’t a full back-Salagado used to be a top class full back but, he isn’t anymore-any winger with pace will turn these two inside out -Yesterday Chelsea didn’t capitalise on this weakness Rovers undoubtedly have concerning all the full backs at the club…the solution could be stirring us in the face….Nelsen will soon recapture his place after injury & Samba was probably our best defender-that was until the debut of Phil Jones -without doubt the best debut I’ve witnessed a young Rovers player make & that includes Simon Barker - To me he looked like he could play in any defensive position in the team-so Mr Allardyce move the lad to full back instead of dropping him when Nelsen returns. I realise its early doors and the lad needs more games under his belt but. I haven’t been this excited about a young Rovers player since Hird & Bailey (& he’s nearly as quick) hehe
.

JEPPO, the only time i feel suicidal is when reading your inane posts. Or watching Rovers away. BTW are you the long-lost brother of Groucho and Harpo?

MARGHEN: Agree about young Indiana Jones, best debut i can remember from a Rovers player. Simon Barker, a Rovers legend! 2nd half performance was excellent yesterday, shows what the players can do when they are allowed to press the opposition and not just sit back and defend. Hopefully the expert will have learned a major lesson from yesterday, but i doubt it.

I hate it when they put labels on players that they are the next Beckham, Like Nzonzi is,Or was going to be the next Patrick Viera, And now after one game we have the next John Terry on our hands,If that is the case the other players at Blackburn best keep eye on there wives when Jones is about,But Joking aside,I was pleased with the lad yesterday he got stuck in and maybe some first team players could do to do the same.
The lad had a good game,And long may he do so in a Rovers shirt,But let us not start sticking lables on players that could be unnerving on them, Its nice to see players like Jones come in and have a good day, It can only show other lads at Rovers that there is a chance of making the first team, And show we can bring players through without spending a lot of money.

Jeppo, While i am happy with the way Rovers are going right now,I still have a opinion about what i think, And other people seem to have a opinion too.
But i am sorry if i do not fall in line with what you want to here, While you only see what you want to see,And disregaurd the rest, I do not.
You seem to have a nack of putting a shine on a turd, And then putting some sugar on it for good measure, And then expect everybody conform and take what you say as it has just come out of Sams mouth,And you was stood at the side of him when he said it.
I have noticed you have not give us'The fitting in with Sams plans' script , But i will wait for that one to pop up again when you have been to Sams for tea.
So keep up your posts to your followers, And just to let you know i respect your views on Rovers ,But i will refrain from having a pop at you in my post, And will stick to ,If i have anything to say to you ,Put it direct to you......

Breaking News from The Independent - Fantastic for Rovers! (no not Burnley's relegation odds now 1-7 on!)
.
The Premier League's sale of its overseas broadcasting rights for 2010-13 will raise around £1.4bn, more than double the previous level of £625m, The Independent can reveal.
.
With just two deals left to be concluded – in Albania and Russia – the League is assured of raising each club's average annual income from overseas rights alone from £10m now to about £23m per season from this summer.
.
Even better for teams like Rovers is from next season (sorry Clarets!) the parachute payment will not only be increased but will be extended to more years - that has to give teams like Rovers more security.
.
And it should push out turnover in the 2010 / 11 season to around £70m to £80m meaning the club could easily look at keeping prices low and more initiatives to get the D/End full and complete taking back Ewood!

Great second half performance by all against Chelsea and we must take that into the Birmingham game from the start. 3 points on Wed now a must to set us up nicely for the big one at the weekend. What a week this promises to be, just hope it turns out to be good for us. Come on you Mighty Blues. P.s hope Chimbonda loses his boots. We looked much better with out him ball watching on Sunday. Only good thing he’s done all season is score against Burnley. Just shows how bad they are.
