Police chiefs outline 'safety first' approach to East Lancashire derby

EAST Lancashire’s top officers in charge of next Sunday’s derby clash have emphasised ‘safety first’ ahead of the eagerly-awaited fixture.

Match commanders Chief Inspector Jeff Brown and Inspector Caroline Edwards said meticulous planning and a ‘large-scale’ police operation would allow all fans to enjoy the day.

Details similar to the first fixture in October have been announced, with the 2,400 Blackburn fans travelling direct to Turf Moor in a convoy of up to 48 coaches.

There is no independent travel allowed.

Chief Insp Brown said: “It clearly worked very, very well for the first fixture. We’ve had meetings with both clubs and supporters groups and explained and agreed the rationale.

“What underpins everything is we have to ensure people get to the fixture safely, watch it in safety and leave safely.

“This is not like going to war as an Army general. It’s not a case of how many casualties we will accept. It doesn’t work like that with football.

“It’s about what is the safest option - and how we achieve it.”

Chief Insp Brown csaid there would be a police presence in every town across East Lancashire, such as Accrington, Whalley, Colne and Nelson.

Mounted police and dogs are being brought in and ‘high-risk’ fans who reportedly clashed at the Station Hotel pub in Blackburn back in October will be closely monitored.

Police believe the game will be memorable for the right reasons.

Chief Insp Brown said: “The vast majority of fans are perfectly well behaved and law-abiding citizens. A small minority cause problems and will seek out any opportunity to cause trouble.

“Where it warrants it, we will deal robustly and firmly with these people. It’s a football match. The public is entitled to come and go safely.”

Insp Edwards said she was ‘confident’ most fans would ‘fully understand the policing arrangements’.

She said: “If we didn’t do it and had 20 assaults, we’d be criticised.”

The Rovers fans will leave around 9am, with turnstiles opening at 9.30am for away fans. The clocks go forward that day, which will make the midday kick-off feel even earlier for fans.

Their 2,400 allocation will be separated by heavily policed rows of 10 seats from the 1,450 Burnley fans also in the Cricket Field Stand.

Will the Directors and Club Officials also be travelling on the coaches with the supporters - or will they be allowed to travel independently? Are they above the remit of Plod?

If we have to be treated like animals then i shall not go to the match. It seems very high handed of the police to ban independant travel and is a very worrying addition to police powers. May be theses games should just be played behind closed doors untill the brain deads can behave.

I'm not 100% convinced that what the police are doing is legal.
.
If a person has a genuine ticket for the game, has no history of football hooliganism, and makes his own way to the match, then on what grounds can they stop you doing so?

This is all about Police overtime.
Its wrong and where are the mp,s and councilors of Burnley and Blackburn .Why are they not speaking out about this .STRAW is the justice secutary as well .

theres none of this in rubgy! Both supporters drink in the same pubs. sometimes i think the police make it worse, i think the hooligans do spoil it for everyone else and probably always will.

Det insp Brown talks about war and casualties. I'd suggest that this man is in the wrong job, and maybe a position in Helmand province would be more fitting for himself and his officers....This is nothing more than a football match you loon ! Or perhaps it's good practice for the real trouble that will inevitably happen one day in this "multi cultural" country of ours.

The fact of the matter is that some football fans are complete morons who only want to cause trouble. They are the only reason the police are needed and it's funny as the club pays part of the police bill so it's really the morons who raise ticket costs to fund extra police. You don't get any of this in rugby!

Who in the police force is selling tickets for these pretigous seats. I bet it`s an who`s who of police force!

Over zealous all round. Why bother going when you can have a lie in, it`s Sunday after all, wake up to a bacon butter, switch on the telly and watch the game as a couch potato rather than being a sheep. Do this , do that, go here, go there. Where is the enjoyment in this?

why don't people stop whinging and whining? The violence in the past that this fixture has attracted makes this action justified. The coaches are free to take people to the ground so stop bleating. If you don't like it don't attend. Its up to you.
The clubs have the right to state that they only want genuine supporters to attend this game and they are doing this in an effort to keep the idiots away from the ground.
Lets put it another way.I will be attending this fixture with my children. If they hadn't have taken these precautions then I would have stayed away as I have been caught up in the middle of mindless violence before and don't fancy it again. As we all know football hooligans are cowards and will only have a go if they outnumber their opposition by about 10 to 1.
So well done to the clubs and the police. I am sure that this will stop someone somewhere from getting his head kicked in because he supports the rivals, whoever that may be.
Makes me feel safer anyway and its a free coach! Whingers? PAH!

Dont think out of towners will be dinking in Burnley.. bit unsafe with going on 1000 lads out for this game, Like last time touble will be out of town or late on after the game. Still no mention of Burnley on the boulevarde, are they trying to hush this up... quit a large number there that night as well. still would make plods plans look bad if after all they went to last time reports of brawls around the towns came to light. All I know is that all 48 cells at Geenbank were full.
Bring it ON

This neanderthal is the reason why both sets of fans have had to travel on special coaches and be herded around.
It's nothing to do with police overtime or any other crackpot conspiracy theories -it's because of complete morons like Markr.
Well done Markr -you managed to ruin the day for thousands of football fans. I know you're proud of yourself.

Markr : dont you know ?
. Weve been run all over for ages in the lower leagues at thE likes of Bolton, Preston, Cardiff, Swansea, Carlisle and yes along time ago at Blackburn.

May be there were Clarets on the Boulevard, its safer now than in the 70s.

Did you go to the Celtic game in 78 ? They took over the whole of Turf Moor including all the Longside. Same as Bolton did at Blackburn a few months earlier.

I agree with your comments about ossy but I suppose that's what democracy is about. Must say his musing about the Celtic match bought into focus a very sharp memory. The raining down of the beer cans on to the pitch and then next thing the policeman with the dart stuck in his forehead was brought off right in front of me and my then 4yr. old son. So have to agree with OTT policing, we put up with the same going to Deadwood

I keep saying Imnot a b****d( I went to my parent 's wedding :-)). Its just i can see through whats going on at Burnley and do not and never will accept the total c***p masquerading as Burnley players.

Re : the Celtic game. I remember it well, with the Turf substantially taken over by a sea of green and white including the entire Longside.Cant remember the result but we won 0-1 at Celtic Park in the second leg and went on ( it was the semi-final)to to win the Anglo-Scottish Cup which was not a mickey mouse competition in those days.

But the players then were proud to wear the shirt and terrific battlers. God knows what the likes of Noble, Kindon, Stevenson etc think of the hammerings we are taking left ,right and centre not to mention the regular abject surrenders.

Do you recall the fence in the Longside being ripped up by the Celts and poles in it being used as spears?. Police horses on the pitch to clear Celtic fans off the pitch and Billy Mc neill ( Celtic manager)coming on the pitch to appeal ( successfully ) for an end to the riot taking place. Remarkable scenes never to be repeated. Viewing from the top-end of the Bee-Hole End I found it one of the most amazing scenes Ive ever seen at Turf Moor ( (on a par with us producing a good quality youth player;-)).

Apart from the humiliation of the Celtic take-over ( there were coacloads in Accy and on the train -watching the game while on holiday in Blackpool) Iit was an unforgettable experience!

I remember listening to that Burnley v Celtic match on the radio and the commentator saying the Celtic fans were ripping the railings apart and using them as spears.

And I was at the Rovers v Bolton match when Bolton got promoted and took over the whole of Ewood except for one half of the Blackburn End. The police wouldn't even let Rovers fans in the Riverside. A bad day if you were a Rovers fan.

A funny thing about that Bolton game.
.
It was the last game of the season and Rovers had nothing to play far but Bolton if they won would be champions - so yes a lot came and we were not that bothered really.
.
But a bunch of mean looking skinheads chased the Rovers fans in the B/End before kick off and they ran into the Riverside. The Bolton fans on the Riverside saw them and thought the Rovers fans were after them so they ran into the D/End - funny really all you needed was Benny Hill next!

are the same travel arrangements being made for this weekends small time man u -v- liverpool game, where both sets of fans would love to get their hands on each other by the throat, or are the manchester police confident they can handle 75'000 potential lunatics, without busing in 3500 scousers like caged animals 3 hrs before the game
burnleys match commander jeff brown & his team of iron fisted power seeking termites from lancashire police should take a look at how the GMP police their games where 75'000 turn up as opposed to the 23'000 at burnley next weekend.
lancashire police are a national embarassment, the police actions are are moronic, grossly over the top, and probably strip you of any human right in the book.
its a stunning waste of police time & public money,
