Striker Thompson issues Burnley war cry

STEVEN Thompson has told Burnley to start turning performances into points – or risk going down with a whimper.

The Clarets missed the chance to climb out of the bottom three with back-to-back home games against Stoke and Wolves last week.

There was personal pride for Thompson, who followed up his first Premier League start with his first goal, albeit it in a 2-1 defeat to Wolves.

But with just one point earned from a possible six, the 31-year-old’s own achievements offered little consolation, and he has urged the team to pull together and prove they are worthy of their top flight place.

“In games we do believe that we’re doing enough and we are creating enough to get things out of games. For whatever reason we’re not,” said the former Rangers and Cardiff striker.

“There is a general feeling that we are coping with what most teams are throwing at us. I think maybe we need to take our chances better and cut out the mistakes totally.

“You’re going to get punished in this league for the slightest lack of concentration because the standard’s so good.

“But what’s frustrating is when you’re on the pitch you do feel as though you’re holding your own against them and we’re not coming away with the points.

“I don’t know whether that’s because for a lot of us it’s our first season in the Premier League and it’s a bit of naivety.

“We’re trying to learn as quickly as we can and we have done all season, but we’re running out of games and we’re going to have to start picking points up.”

But Thompson admitted the players were finding it tough to keep trying to bounce back from disappointments on a regular basis, particularly after the majority of the current squad celebrated 32 wins from 61 games in all competitions of their play-off winning season last year.

“It’s difficult. It’s not something a lot of us are used to,” said Thompson of the players’ reaction to another loss, this time at the hands of Wolves.

“We’d maybe get a defeat here and there, but to constantly get defeats ... you’re trying to be super-positive and lift the spirits of everybody.

“It is difficult. We work very hard on the training ground and we’ve got a great squad.

“If you don’t believe you’re as well chucking the towel in now.

“You’ve got to have something to hold onto.

“But by no means is it over at all.

“(Saturday) was a big match, but it doesn’t mean that we’re down because we lost.”There are eight games left and I think a lot of those games are winnable.”

Thompson, the star of Burnley’s last two games, even believes that the winless tide can turn away from home this weekend.

“Why can’t we go to Wigan and win and get the monkey off our back for this away run as well?” he said.

“I don’t see any reason why we can’t go there and win.

“After that we’ve got the derby at home, which is winnable.

“Six points, that could be us out of it.You just don’t know.

“We’ve got to keep going. As hard as it is we’ve got to keep picking ourselves up and dusting ourselves down.

"That’s when it takes a bit of character.”

And how are we going to do that Thommo? The performances are on the whole bloody rubbish, some players are going through the motions and content to draw the dosh and the crowd is
already restless.
The points return of 4 from what is it 48 now is an accurate reflection of the performance levels. The only solution if we go down is remove Kilby and Flood from office, replacing them with real Burnley supporters who have the club's best interests at heart.

One final question Thommo : you scored a goal whow!!. But what else have you done to earn the dosh we put in your pocket every week? Really, in precise terms what have you done to keep us up since August?

I have been to 4 games and regular supporter since 1974 as well as buying merchandise. At least i can remove my blinkers and see through some of the garbage robbing the club and its support.
Its not my task to keep us up thats down to the players. They are not doing very well are they?

4 games since 1974, buy merchandise and you consider yourself a regular supporter!!!!!!

I am falling about laughing, what was the merchandise a 'Bob Lord Out' banner?

As for Thommo, when he has been called on to do his stuff for the Clarets he's seldom let us down and is as responsible as anyone for getting us to the Premier. It's not his fault that for whatever reason, he's not been the flavour of the month both for Judas & Laws. It's the same with Edgar - one of the best players for the Clarets at Old Trafford hardly put a foot wrong but never played since. One does start to question the policy about decisions at the moment in respect of team selection. However, as I have said on many occasions (and you've just confirmed it with your personal statistics) You are not, repeat not, nor can be classed/considered as a Clarets supporter. You are an unconstructive critical person who is frightened of coming out of the BRFC fans closet. Wouldn't be surprised if you're not either hasslem hasslem or madari the snake charmer in disguise - A strictly wind up merchant. However, I remain calm enough to caution all true Claret fans to treat your comments with the contempt they deserve. Lets see this year is 2010 minus 1974 = 36years / 4 = once every 9 years. Oops! My apologies you really are a genuine supporter - On your bike!! Get down to Deadwood!!! They probably have some free Ronnie Clayton or Harry Leyland merchandise to give away

You semi-literate idiot. I obviously meant 4 games this season and was regular most years since about 1977.
As i keep saying Im not a closet BRFC supporter; its just i can see through this set of t***ers in the playing squad and on the Board even if you cant !.
Ronnie Clayton and Harry Leyland : didnt we used to produce homegrown players like that? ie regular England internationals and amongst the best keepers in the top flight. In fact far more so than they ever did. Talking of the 1960s : our performances this season have soiled that famous 1960 Championship shirt forever. So who's bright idea was that?. Messrs Kilby and Flood no doubt!

Stop living in a daydream and wake up about whats happening at Turf Moor. If we as fans dont snap out of this doped up state and demand psitive changes its a downward slide into League 1.

A rare appearance to give one of your own grief eh, golden boy?
.
At least this fella's got the nous to realise whats going on. Unlike you, who got caught up in the early season nonsense.

There's a midas who knows all that glitters is gold and he's following the scruff to relegation.......

No I commented on what you wrote and I read. You quite clearly stated 4 games and a regular supporter since 1974. No mention of which season, so who's the semi-literate idiot now. STATE the facts instead of your usual codswallop and trying to start a malicious rumour with your nudge, nudge, wink, wink inferences about criminal acts going on within the board. Also how you latch on to any stray BRFC fans comments trying to crack on you're a true dyed in the wool Clarets Fans. it is so called people like you, who go on to cause riots and sit back all smug on your settee never stirring from your midden or far from your remote to make sure you don't miss match of the day. Then you can say you're a Clarets supporter - Tosh!!!!

If you read my comments replying to the previous post they were clear. 4 games ever attended in your life is clearly ridiculous unless youve lived overseas.

The difference between us that im indepepdently minded and dont believe anything the club throw at us. Read the accounts and recent LT pieces
