Get behind the players, pleads Burnley striker

STEVEN Thompson has urged Burnley fans to get 100 per cent behind their Premier League survival bid, after boos rang out at the final whistle of Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Wolves.

The striker’s introduction – one half of a double substitution with Robbie Blake 10 minutes into the second half – also prompted chants of ‘You don’t know what you’re doing’, directed at manager Brian Laws.

The objections weren’t aimed at the two replacements for Chris Eagles and Andre Bikey, but more at the fact that the influential Eagles was being forced to make way when the Clarets were 2-0 down.

In the end the pair justified their inclusion, as Thompson scored his first Premier League goal after Blake had been denied an equaliser by the woodwork.

But Thompson admitted the fans’ frustrations had translated onto the pitch.

“You can hear it can’t you?” he said.

“They’ve got a right to voice their opinion. But from the players’ point of view it doesn’t help anybody when players’ confidence is low anyway. It’s disappointing. Really disappointing.

“I think they are getting frustrated. It’s difficult as a player because you’re frustrated as well, if not more so.

“We’re trying hard to get out of this situation. It (booing) certainly doesn’t help when you’re on the pitch.”

Nevertheless, Thompson admitted he felt the Clarets had done enough, particularly in the second half, to get something out of the game.

“There was a general feeling in the last 20 minutes after we got one back that we were going to go on and get something out of the game. I think there was a strong belief, and we were very unlucky not to,” said the 31-year-old.

“Maybe it was just the rub of the green or the ball dropping to us. Robbie hit the post and we had a couple cleared away.

“I think we deserved something from the game. Aside from Wolves’ two goals – one a deflection and one we gifted them – I don’t think they really threatened us that much.

“But again it’s a game lost and we are running out of games, we’re going to have to find something from somewhere.”

He added: “It’s a massive disappointment.

“Everyone’s really gutted in the changing room. We knew it was a big game.

“It’s difficult picking yourself up week after week when you keep getting knocked down, but we need to do it.

“We do believe that we’re good enough. Wolves weren’t any better than us and I don’t think Stoke were any better than us during the week, but we need to turn that into points.”

I dont know how youve got the bloody cheek. You earn all that dosh and then have a go at the crowd (who pay your wages) for making their dissatisfaction clear.

Its not themanager who is to blame for this : its the players who are simply not good enough and ultimately Kilby and Flood for failing to acquire the likes of Dunne, Butt, Owen and Friedel who were all available at reasonable prices. They would have kept us up i have no doubts.
So its time us long-suffering punters let the men in suits and hospitality lounges know what we think :

SACK THE BOARD

Lets hear it loud and clear so they are under no illusions.

I think that Thompson has got hold of the wrong end of the stick. The fans weren't booing the players they were showing their frustration at the management.
There was no objection to the players coming on as substitutes but the fans felt the wrong players were being taken off.

To put Paterson , a centre forward on the right wing did not make sense."Pato" may have a lot of qualities but if you were a Premier League full back who would you rather face Eagles or Paterson?
All Brian Laws had to do was to replace Paterson with Thompson and put Eagles in his correct position on the right wing and replace Elliot with Blake. To put Elliot in central midfield to replace Bikey was inept.Again Elliot has a lot of good qualities but in central midfield he gives the ball away far too much and rarely tracks back.
It was also felt amongst the supporters that if Laws had picked the right team from the start (with players not playing out of position ) we would probably have won the match and the same could be said of the Potsmouth match. That was the frustration of the supporters not antagonism to our players efforts.

Ossy, Those players may have been availible at a so called reasonable fees but they still command premium wages ( Owen 50,000 a week )
A club our size can not pay the 25,30,35 thousand plus in wages. The club would end up in Pompeys situation and could even fold.
Sure we have a right to let the players know how we feel , but all that does is put more preasure on the players and fire's up the opposition and thier supporters.
You can not deny the players are'nt trying thier hearts out. You can not deny that we have not really had the rub of the green or much luck on this bad run were on.
Yes maybe we could have got so called better players but at what cost my friend.
As for the board ,would you rather have people running the club the way they have at Pompey and bringing it to its knees.
Keep the faith mate. UTC

OK. Fair comments but there are issues about Board financial policy, some of which ios public knowledge and some of which isnt.
Its time supporters let them know what we think of them in no uncertain terms. The Pompey situation could happen at Burnley anyway.

Very true Ossy, but i guess in the current climate it could happen to many a club.
We are in the mire though and i know a vast majority of supporters are miffed by the situation but surely the important fact is to get behind the team for the remaining games and fire them up to try and get results.
If at the end of the season our adventure comes to an end then that must be the best time to vent the anger and frustrations at those who the supporters think are accountable.
I'm going to keep believing that the great escape is on and look back the the Orient game.
It's not over yet and if and it is a big if, we can win these next two games then it really will be game on.
With confidence the team will gain from winning and the supporters cheering them none stop and not getting on their backs they can make a fight of it.
Cheers Ossy. UTC

Of course we can stay up and its not a long-shot. 2-3 away games are winnable, Maybe you are right re players but if it comes to the worst its time to let rip with Kilby and Flood.

If we dont we are a collective bunch of mugs. I really do mean that, myself included.

Wasn't it obvious that the scruff board had no ambition to stay in the Premier league before the start of the season? Andy Gray stated that you were "the worst team ever" to enter the prem and he was right. The only surprise is that you've got over 20 points and beat Utd.
.
Enjoy your fiscal stability in the lower leagues and leave the 'top' flight to the 'top' clubs.

Fans have a right to voice their opinion and quite frankly after what amounts to one win in half a season who can blame them.

I am not a quisling at all. Its tome for the Board to know what we feel. If it comes to the worst lets give to em with both barrekls inside and outside Tuerf Moor.

BL is not to blame : these are not his players and hes had neither the time nor funds to recruit better quality personnel.

Dead right look at his own statistics on the otehr article 4 games since 1974 and buys merchandise then considers himself a supporter. People likehimneed ignoring & shouldn't be encouraged by offering sensible comments from TRUE supporters

Ive already corrected you on that and that stat is clear in terms of the reply.

These areserious comments intended to provoke discussion. Can we please have some instead of sticking our heads in the sand, swallowing the insults to our intelligence written by Cummings and Geldard and refusing to face reality.

We need three fundamental things to happen over the next two years :

1. Recruit higher calibre players.
2. Remove Kilby and Flood from the Board.
3. Transfer the club to a supporter owned and controlled Trust.
