GRAHAM Alexander believes the experience of last season’s successful promotion campaign will help Burnley as they bid to avoid a swift return to the Championship this year.

The Clarets finished last season in superb form as they secured 10 wins from their final 14 games to gain promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs.

Currently third from bottom with nine games to play, they now find themselves needing a strong finish to the current campaign to avoid relegation.

But Alexander believes many of the squad are older and wiser for last season’s experiences.

Asked if there were comparisons to the pressures of last season, he said: “I think there are.

“The target at this stage last season was to get promoted and to do that we knew we had to win games.

“There were some games where we went behind and we lost a couple of games that we didn’t expect to lose.

“We even went into the last game having to win to get into the play-offs.

“They were big pressure games and this is the same.

“It is a really similar situation to that and I think the experience of last year and what the lads went through will stand us in good stead coming into these next few games.”
