ACCRINGTON Stanley may decide against lifting a transfer embargo during the January transfer window.

Stanley are currently limited to 20 senior players because of an embargo linked to a debt of around £50,000 to the PFA.

New benefactor Ilyas Khan has already paid off a £75,000 debt to HM Revenue and Customs to lift another embargo, which had prevented them from signing any new players at all.

But senior figures at the club are of the view that there is no rush to remove the second embargo - because 20 is a reasonable squad size in any case.

Boss John Coleman will still be able to sign players providing others leave beforehand.

“If we don’t do anything it will be lifted in April when our big Football League payment comes through,” said chief executive Rob Heys.

“I’m sure John might have his views on it but from a club’s point of view, having 20 players isn’t necessarily a bad thing because you can only start with 11 players and we’ve only got space for seven subs.

“As long as our injuries aren’t too bad then perhaps 20 is quite a good number to have.

“You don’t want too many in your squad because not everyone can play and it causes upset.”

Managing director Dave O’Neill added: “I think we use 20 as a mental limit for both the club and for John.

“Obviously if it got to the stage where the squad was right down to the bones we would probably look to do something fairly quickly to lift that.”

Stanley could receive a boost to their squad options with winger Chris Turner targeting a return to action on Boxing Day at Morecambe following an ankle injury.

Tickets and travel for the Reds’ Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie to Leeds on Tuesday will remain available from the club until midday on Monday, with packages costing £15 for adults and £10 for concessions. Fans can also buy tickets at the Elland Road turnstiles.
