Lone striker works for us, says Blackburn Rovers stand-in boss

NEIL McDonald has stressed Blackburn Rovers have earned the majority of their points this season playing just one up front after Saturday’s Ewood Park bore draw.

Rovers’ assistant boss, in charge in the continued absence of Sam Allardyce, was quick to defend the decision to revert to playing Franco Di Santo as a lone striker – despite supporters’ complaints of a lack of ambition after the 0-0 draw with Stoke.

Allardyce, who returned home yesterday after surgery, picked the side, with Jason Roberts unfortunate to be dropped to the substitutes’ bench due to a change of formation.

Since the introduction of Roberts and Benni McCarthy swung the game in Rovers’ favour against Portsmouth, Allardyce has fielded two strikers in the last two games, but opted to give David Dunn a more advanced role this time round.

McDonald said: “Over the season so far, we have picked up 13 points and that is the formation we have played so the manager wanted to go with that.

“We have got the majority of our points that way, we wanted to get David Dunn further forward.

"We have picked up another point at home, which is excellent. Three points would obviously have been better.

“It is a blow that Dunn went off, because he had been in form in but we have taken him off and we will assess him over the weekend to see how he is.”

McDonald, while disappointed at his side’s lack of invention, was delighted to see Rovers keep their second clean sheet in three games.

At times this season, Rovers have been guilty of losing concentration at crucial times but stayed solid as they continued their impress run of results at Ewood Park.

McDonald said: “We were disappointed the way we defended against Fulham and we were really pleased with how we did against Bolton and we have had that same kind of performance ton Saturday.

"We have kept a clean sheet as well which is great but you need to score goals as well to win games.

“I would give Stoke credit. They are a very hard team to break down, they have two banks of four, are well organised, are a big bunch of lads as well.

“We have created a couple of chances and we almost finished it towards the end with a header from Chris Samba.

"We have broke them down, their keeper has made a few good saves, which is what he is paid to do.”

Fair do's to Mac for trying to justify the one up front strategy, and I have to acknowledge that we have won points when we used it BUT I reckon we would have won those points anyway, and won them earlier in the game and done so with more attacking and entertaining football if we had played TUF in those same games. Its rubbish really to try and justify the rubbish one up strategy as it immediately allows the other team the chance to play - as we dont put them under the same pressure as TUF would do. We have the players to go two up front and put more pressure on the opposition and play a more attractive, attacking and rewarding style of play. Time the Rovers management stopped trying to defend the 'indefensible' one-up front at home strategy! I can accept it 'away' at Chelsea maybe or Man Utd but not at 'home' and to Stoke!

Of course we've picked up most points when we've started with a 4-5-1, we've started with a 4-5-1 formation for most of our games (10, I make it). What a strange argument. It even appears that the Portsmouth game is included as contributing to the 13 points, when we had to change to playing two strikers in front of McCarthy to get the result. And we also had to adjust our tactics when beating Villa, because of the sending off.

I can't say I agree that it's excellent drawing at home to Stoke, there's a lot that needs to be improved, but it sounds like the management are turning a blind eye to it.

451 is not the problem,if you push your wingers forward it becomes 433,the problem is we don't have the personel to play any formation with confidence.Without Dunn we lack crativity, without Grella we lack bite, our midfield seems incapable of supporting our forwards or forming a first line of defence when we lose the ball, and most of all we lack the one thing that all top teams posses and thats pace.Lets hope Sam can get rid of some under achievers and bring in one or two players that fit better into our squad,in my opinion getting rid of the deadwood even for free will be the hard bit.

If we try to contain Chelsea tomorrow we will get thumped. We need to overrun them from the off. Ok we might end up getting beat but at least we will have tried. Nobody expects us to win, but you never know, stranger things have happened.

So technically with that argument we should play 442 in every away game as that has been the only way we have got points away from home. I do feel that though Di Santo is technically very good he is not scoring and doesnt seem confident in some one on one situations. Think that had been Benni or Roberts they would be dropped by now. I relaly want see either Roberts, Benni or Kalinic put into a two upfront and see how they do, over a long period of time

Then take 2 from Di santo, mccarthy, roberts, hoillet and kalinic, ALL of them (cept mccarthy) need to work on their one on ones and finishing!!!!!

Rovers have done well to get the crowds back this season but the teams formation and tactics is just going to lose what we have gained. Me and my mate travel from Liverpool every home game, Im sure there are season ticket holders who travel even longer distances, it feels like more of an effort to turn up at our beloved Ewood for a 4-5-1 formation. Villa and Wolves werent bad games, Dingles game was good and so was 2nd half against Portsmouth(4-3-3). Lets get back to the attack attack attack mentality we had against Bolton.

Blackburn board need to take notice of these honest and loyal fans as everyone i talk to is getting fed up with these negative tactics becuase this will result in people not attending because they are not entertained, dont get me wrong we have to face facts where we are and what we are capable of doing and to me mid-table and good cup runs are not alot to ask for, unless sam has some big plans for january (which i doubt with the loss anouncement) its another long hard season with little hope, come on rovers.

As the saying goes"The crowd can act as the twelfth man".If we'd have had two strikers from the start I'm sure the crowd would have responded in a positive way and got the players going.Knowing at around 2-15pm that we were back to a single striker against Stoke(no disrespect)it put the crowd on a downer. The day was summed up for me, when MGP came on and Benni was left on the bench.Come on we weren't playing Chelsea or Man UTD.If we want to continue attracting fans to Ewood,we've got be more positive at home.

Next season i suspect the "new fans" and some of the usuals will do the talking with their feet next season and all the hard work put into the club for the past few years will be undone by a stupid fat c*nt

One minute he says we've won points by being tight and playing one upfront, next minute he congratulates Stoke for being hard to break down with two banks of four!

Truth is some of our players are not good or consistent enough to play in a four man midfield, and I'm pointing the finger at Diouf, Peds and Grella.

As for Di-Santo, I doubt he'll get in Chelsea reserve side never mind first team squad.

Well done Eddie. You are one of the very few that can see the real issues. Formations mean nothing, and TUF doesnt guarantee attack minded footie, and neither does 451 mean boring and negative stuff.
The problem is we dont have the right balance of players. Diouf, Andrews, Roberts and Pederson aren't good enough and all have struggled at rovers and elsewhere under different managers.McCarthy is unfit and Kallinic untried.
Grella and Nzonzi are both OK but are only good at the defensive side of midfield play. Just where do we think this free flowing brand of football is going to come from?
Allardyce realises the teams shortcomings and plays in a way that will get results - the option, as pointed out by others, is the Ince or Mowbray way and keep trying to play attacking football regardless of the teams abilities.
This 'tactic' will get us relegated for sure.
We have lost the following players:
Freidel, Santa Cruz, Bentley, Warnock sold.
Dunn, Nelson and Reid over the last 2 years to long term injuries and Tugay to retirement.
This is 2/3 of a great team. Just how do we expect a manager to improve us under these conditions? Hughes left because he knew the s**t was about to hit the fan and didn't fancy the job under the current conditions and so we had to take a punt on Ince. He naffed the job up through ignorance and niaivity and it took Allardyce to save us from oblivion. I was at Wigan on Ince's last stand and the game against Stoke, boring though it was, was a big, big improvement on that.

Now I get frustrated at 0-0 draws at home too, but we do need a reality check.
It will take SA or any manager a few transfer windows to turn Rovers into the team we were a few years ago and we need to appreciate that SA's goal is to keep us in there fighting, and not to bore us to death. But we just dont have the players to play the way we'd all like.
Remember you cant polish a turd!

We need to stick with the team and manager until we can buy some better footballers. For me its as simple as that.

Good post Jonny Bovril.
.
It's true you can't polish a turd but we simply don't have the players, with pace, to support 451.
.
That's not the fault of the players, that's down to management. So why do Rovers persist with it when we always revert, eventually, to 442?
.
If this is a 2 or 3 year project then personally, I'd like Sam or JW to explain the situation, I don't have a problem with the fact we can't compete with the bigboys.
.
JW, Sam.... talk to us, supporters aren't that stupid (Andrews haters excluded).
.
If Benni for example is a problem, tell us if that's possible legally. The best striker at the club, and we don't play him! There has to be a reason. I'd love to k now why he doesn't play.
.
Talk to us Sam. Us fans might not be too bright sometimes, but stupid, we are NOT.

you don`t have to be a genius to work out that hoilett has already decided to leave the club, hence why he`s not getting chances anymore.

no manager will select a player that`s not committed to the club. imo that`s the whole reason mccarthy doesn`t get picked because of his lack of commitment too.

I sometimes wonder if it was meant to say 'loan striker' on Di Santo's contract with us and somebody spelt it wrong. Sam and his tactics take no account of the fact that football is only there as entertainment for the fans. If they fail to produce that, they might as well pack up. It's not designed as a run-out for the lads and we don't owe them a living at £50,000+ a week while we are struggling to make ends meet to pay for a discounted season ticket. Having won with two up front away (at Bolton) after having to switch to 4-4-2 in the previous home game to win against Pompey, it was frustrating to say the least to see them employ that dreadful negative formation against Stoke. We played Roberts and McCarthy up front against them last season and won 3-0.

Sorry, why should our midfield only ever consist of these players? surely they have to perform well every week to justify a place in the team, what about competition for places, if someone like diouf, andrews, or grella hit a good run of form?

Because from what ive seen at ewood. Im not a fa of andrews, but your the first fan i've ever heard question his work-rate. Grella (when fit) is great at breaking up play, and besides dunn and emerton could be our most important player. But when you say our midfield should only ever include Pedersen, nzonzi and emerton, does that mean you would play them no matter what? and would you shut the door on everyone else?
I have no idea what set-pieces your talking about? the last time he scored from one in the league was against sheff utd (about 3 years ago), and he is 1 of the worst corner takers i have ever seen. Grella and Andrews have far better work ethic, although I agree that Pedersen does'nt make silly tackle, mainly because he can't be arsed getting stuck in.
I would use a 3 man midfield of Emo Grella and Nzonzi, with dunn and Beni pushed up to support JR. If we need a left winger, I would rather play lars RB, and stick chimbonda there, who has been our most creative "wide-man" this season
