FULL-TIME: Burnley 1 Aston Villa 1

EMILE Heskey's late equaliser meant Burnley had to settle for a draw at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League this afternoon.

Burnley captain Steven Caldwell had put his side ahead with a ninth-minute header from Robbie Blake's free-kick.

That looked like being enough until Heskey popped up with four minutes to go to convert James Milner's cross.

History, and there was a lot of it, had been against Villa from the start as they had not won at Burnley in their previous 22 league meetings - their last was in 1936 - and were without an away victory in four games going into this fixture.

Prior to the game, the home record of Owen Coyle's side was bettered only by Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Clarets were tenacious yet controlled - epitomised by veteran midfielder Graham Alexander - while striker Steven Fletcher proved a handful for experienced centre-back Richard Dunne all afternoon.

Backed by a strong wind Burnley took an early lead and looked like holding on to it until Heskey's intervention.

Blake's inch-perfect inswinging free-kick from wide on the right may have just skimmed off Dunne but Caldwell was up challenging and he headed powerfully into the net despite Brad Friedel getting a fingertip to it.

Republic of Ireland defender Dunne's week showed no signs of improving when he was booked for a late challenge on Fletcher as the striker threatened to burst through the inside-left channel.

Andre Bikey's dipping volley from Fletcher's lay-off was only marginally over the crossbar and when Steve Sidwell deflected Alexander's long-range effort for a corner the unmarked Bikey headed wide when he should have hit the target.

Ten minutes before the interval Chris Eagles received a few choice words from Alexander after needlessly giving the ball away in the opposition's half, allowing Villa to spring a counter-attack which almost caught out Burnley.

Moments later Clarets goalkeeper Brian Jensen was almost embarrassed after racing out to the left edge of his penalty area only to miss the ball under pressure from Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The Villa striker laid off a pass for Ashley Young but he curled his shot over as Clarke Carlisle desperately tried to get back.

Burnley replied with Bikey's rising drive clipping Sidwell for another corner, which this time Friedel punched clear.

Seconds before half-time Ashley Young's corner picked out Milner at the far post and his pass across the six-yard area was fortuitously sliced behind by Alexander.

Five minutes after the interval Dunne was lucky to escape a second yellow card for pulling Fletcher's shirt on the edge of the penalty area, with Carlos Cuellar instead cautioned for fouling the Scotland striker.

Agbonlahor should then have scored soon after Tyrone Mears had curled his 20-yard free-kick wide, after Friedel's long punt was flicked on by John Carew.

The striker had only Jensen to beat but as he shot for the far corner the slightest of touches from the Dane diverted it around the post.

Immediately down the other end Blake forced Friedel to parry his stinging shot as the game became increasingly open.

Sidwell had half a chance to score from Ashley Young's viciously inswinging free-kick with 20 minutes to go but the ball flashed past the far post before the former Reading midfielder could reach it.

Burnley replaced Eagles with the powerfully-built Kevin McDonald while £12million summer signing from Middlesbrough Stewart Downing finally made his debut for Villa after an ankle injury when he replaced Sidwell.

It was the Clarets substitute who made the first contribution, setting up Fletcher for a fierce shot which Friedel tipped over.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill also threw on Heskey for full-back Luke Young late in the game and the England international salvaged a point in the 86th minute.

Milner collected Jensen's weak punch and curled a cross to the far post where Heskey held off Caldwell to head home the equaliser.

Another well deserved point on the board for Owens boys, maybe should have been all 3 but a good point all the same .In the first half in particular we were very good indeed we faded a little second half but thats to be expected against teams like villa, if im being picky maybe the beast should have done better with his punch out prior to the goal but thats football,on a final note to all the boys and girls from fleawood park just when is this bubble going to burst that you keep telling us about? Even before the season began you come on here spouting your ridiculous bile and insults telling us about the so called gulf in class between us and yourselves and look at us know well above you in the league playing proper football not your brand of kick and rush and more than holding our own against some top class sides .I know its still early days but i think we are well capable of surviving in this league we have a great manager and players who wear the shirt with pride .Keep up the good work we are very proud of you.

For all his faults at least RAyzer can be honest and voice the truth occasionally. Which is more than can be said for some of the deluded lamps that think they're nearly as good as Liverpool......

Was hoping to read a true summary of the game against Villa from proper clarets with then he started the Blue mist came down & he showed is true colours ( green with envy ). A premier league expert pundit, although having watched no more than 13 games in his life, a goal scored yesterday I will say it quietly from a set piece not the proper brand of football you mention.
I know it as been hurting for 30 years but you have to be gracious in defeat.

A game that you had in your hands,You have to take this as giving 2 points away.......
.
This home run of wins and now slipping to draws at home,And losing on the road is starting to show, Its a long season,It will only get longer for you lot, Its like you can see the claw marks in the wood where you are trying to hang on in each game....
.
But of all the people to undo you, Lard boy Heskey........I bet him and Jensen had a right good chin wag over Buns, Pies, crisps etc when the game was over..
.
Nice to see you shown a loss in money terms, Flood is doing a great job, You will have to wait till next year , And find out then how much more he has had his fingers in the till again...........

Hope big sam the buns, pie and crisp stealer gets well soon, wouldn't want the b@stards to start playing football while he's away.
A point against villa isn't a bad result at all but for the fact we outplayed them, it was definately 2 points dropped.
I'm a little worried that the Beast, in our last few games, is becoming a bit david james. All his good work is undone by stupid actions that end up costing us. What the f**k was he doing with that punch? It doesn't look spectacular and no-one is impressed.
He would get more recognition from his national coach, which is clearly something that's on his mind judging by the amount of media he's engaging in these past few weeks, if he'd chalked up another clean sheet with a safe and comfortable display.
Typical, he's applauded for his displays and the penalty saves in our opening games and quite rightly so, but he needs to stop believing his own press and think about what got him the recognition in the first place.
Stop giving interviews, playing for the cameras and concentrate on what's important.
He's still a great keeper though and i'm proud to see him in CLARET AND BLUE.
Kev Mac clearly is short on match fitess. Comes on as sub, receives the ball on the left side and plays it out with his second touch with no-one around him, what was that all about?
Then there's poor Fletch, he was in a great position on the right corner of their area begging for the ball, but Kev Mac took too long in playing it making the chance four times as difficult.
A good player, just short on match fitness which substitute appearences won't do anything for.
Fletch, impresses more with each game he plays. Top man.
Keeping eveything in perspective though, we are still doing absolutely fantastic. Still can't believe it when I put the teletext on and see BURNLEY in the top half of the premiership. Puts a massive smile on my face.
How to work out if a telly has come from blackburn; look at the remote control, the arrow on the down button has faded!
BURNLEY FC.....a profitable premiership adventure.

Regarding your profitable adventure, found out today some of your boys are on £10,000 a week and are looking for transfers come January. You know what they say about paying peanuts, this is the big time.No room for penny pinching pretenders.

I'm looking and I can't see you anywhere, do you suggest I press the down button?
Dull and uninspiring is what the sky sports report says, doesn't surprise me from two bottom half teams who are struggling.
You'll get nowt down at fulham.
Lets see after we've both played 13 games eh?
How much you spent to get where you are? wasters.

Ye, but it was worth it. We have lived the dream and lifted the Premiership and league cups. While you are never going to win sod all and are getting nose bleeds being mid-table. Let's see after we have played 38 games. You will drop faster than "Jenson the cheat "did against Wigan. Flood is going to have to get his cheque book out and seriously invest, never mind offering your 20 man first team squad £100k each to keep your cheap skate club in the Big time. For now, enjoy.Believe me, it won't last much longer.
