Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce to have coronary surgery - will miss three games

SAM Allardyce is set to miss Blackburn Rovers' next three games to undergo coronary surgery.

The Rovers' boss had complained of brief episodes of chest discomfort and investigations have revealed a narrowing to one branch of his coronary arteries, according to the club.

Allardyce will undergo an angioplasty next week which will see the insertion of a stent to correct the problem.

He will miss tomorrow's clash against Bolton Wanderers, as well as upcoming games against Fulham (away) and Stoke (home).

Club bosses say he is expected to be back in the dug-out for the Carling Cup quarter-final with Chelsea on Wednesday week.

Rovers chairman John Williams said: "Sam is very disappointed, particularly at missing the Bolton fixture, but his well being is of prime consideration.

"We all appreciate that Premier League football is a stressful business and prevention is always better than cure."

In Allardyce's absence, assistant manager Neil McDonald will take charge of first team affairs.

According to the British Heart Foundation, a coronary angioplasty is a technique for treating coronary heart disease and angina.

Typically, a catheter – a fine, flexible, hollow tube – with a small inflatable balloon at its tip will be passed into an artery in either the groin or arm.

The operator then uses X-ray screening to direct the catheter into a coronary artery until its tip reaches a narrow or blocked section.

The balloon will then be gently inflated so that it squashes the fatty tissue in the narrowed artery, allowing the blood to flow more easily.

The catheter contains a stent - a small tube of stainless steel mesh.

As the balloon is inflated, the stent expands so that it holds open the narrowed blood vessel.

The balloon is let down and removed, leaving the stent in place.

Most people can go home the same day or the next day.

it wil be interesting as when Neil McDonald has looked after them in Cup games we have playerd 442. So maybe he will have little more say in the games. As he will have to make choices on his own during the game.

Sam has always been a big man in my mind and I wish him a speedy recovery. His outspoken ways with the bosses hasn't done him favours and I hope he has the backing from true Rover supporters during his absence. Get well soon big fella.

Trust the dingle moron RAyser to come out with that comment!! We all realise that health comes before anything else but he/she!!! comes out with this one. May Sam benefit from this procedure quickly and be back soon! Fair play to Old Timer, Masher etc who are football fans foremost and have passed on their good wishes in true football fan form sod off to rayzer and "banjos" from darwen (as if!!!) KEARNEY23, reading - F**K OFF !! - All rovers fans DO NOT want Roberts up front !!! - I know cos I'm 1 and I can't stand the guy (at best he is a championship player) and non of my mates like him either and we are all season ticket holders and neither do any of the season ticket holders who sit round us - everyone hates him most of the time.
I aggree with 2 up front but even a blind man can see that Di Santos has become Rovers #1 striker with his movement, effort and link up play.
Roberts had his chance and blew it - a long long time ago. (He should have been the one shipped off to QPR this week NOT Reid, who is far better than spit, on the right hand side).

Rayzer - I normally defend you as a proper Burnley fan mate, but not today. Disgraceful comments. As much as I detest anything Burnley, I have been the first on the site to offer commiserations to Burnley fans grieving over the deaths of fellow Burnley fans or players. Simply appalling mate, cant believe Mr. Cockerton has allowed it. Maybe a short ban is required?

Come on Big Sam. The vast majority of REAL football fans are rooting for you big man. Get well soon!!
