Downes leaves Blackburn Rovers Academy

Lancashire Telegraph: COACH: Bobby Downes COACH: Bobby Downes

ACADEMY manager Bobby Downes has left Blackburn Rovers.

Downes joined Rovers in 1997 and oversaw the conversion to Academy status, but has now left by mutual consent.

A number of players – including David Dunn, Martin Taylor, Paul Gallagher and Matt Derbyshire – progressed from the Academy to the first team during his time at the club.

Head of coaching Gary Bowyer will assume responsibility for the Academy until the appointment of a new Academy manager.

'Mutual consent' is the great modern euphemism beloved of PR people. How about finding out the real reason, LT? Sam has commented on Robinson and we all knew his reasons anyway. Why has Downes gone?

When we didn't have a fancy, expensive academy, we produced players like Ronnie Clayton, Bryan Douglas, Vernon, England, Dobing, Bray, Pickering, Byrom, Newton, McEvoy, Whelan, etc. All of these were first team quality, many of them internationals. After spending millions on the present "academy", what do we have to show for it ? Fancy buildings and pitches will not produce our future first teamers without competent staff and, most importantly, a good scouting team.
The last decade of poor results from our academy call out for some serious changes. Perhaps this is the first step in that process. Other teams produce good young players, there should be no reason why we can't.

Gosportdunc - The original academy facility is now used by the first team squad, and has been since the early days of Mark Hughes' reign.

If we're talking about young players coming through, some of our so called supporters need to have a look at the negative impact they have on these young lads.

Keith Treacy is treated disgustingly by too large a percentage of our fans.
Aarron Doran is often said to be "not good enough" by people who have never seen him play, except maybe 45 minutes on the telly.

Jason Wilcox had to overcome disgusting abuse on his way to becoming a Rovers legend.

Keith Hill and David May used to get a fair bit too.

James Beattie (a player many of you think we should sign), Damian Johnson (Brimingham Captain), Martin Taylor all playing in the top flight. Didn't really get a chance at Rovers or weren't up to it.
Neither did my mate Marlon, or Shay Given.

Can you imagine Man Utd fans acting the way some of our fans do towards their young players?

Some of our supporters would rather have lazy money-grabbing wasters than hungry young lads with a point to prove.

Carlos Villaneuava was garbage, but everyone liked him. Treacy is far better!

This stupidity, snobbery and small mindedness from Rovers fans is a disgrace.

I have had massive rows in the stands about this before, and no doubt will again.

When a young lad does get a break, encourage him! Don't try to bury him before he gets started!

Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce is understood to have decided that Nikola Zigic is the striker that he wants to bring to Ewood Park.

Allardyce has been on the lookout for a striker to replace Roque Santa Cruz (even before he left for Manchester City) and this has seen plenty of names mentioned in the newspapers, including Zigic who is now believed to be Big Sam's priority signing??

Newspaper reports understand that Rovers will offer Valencia £6 million for the 28-year-old 6ft 5in Serbian International giant, however, there are no quotes (direct or indirect) from anyone to back up this speculation, so it could be nothing more than newspaper speculation!!
