Lakeland Classic lives up to name

THIS year’s Lakeland Classic lived up to its name – and reputation – as one of the best one-day historic events on the calendar.

And three East Lancashire crews were in action, contesting 22 demanding special tests in Cumbria, starting and finishing at the Truckstop near Penrith.

Pendle businessman Kevin Clark and Tom Leeming had a great run in their Avenger Tiger, finishing second in class P1, while Kelbrook garage owner Ross Butterworth and Ali Proctor brought their Sunbeam Lotus home third in class C2.

Road rally expert Steve Entwistle, from Rishton, and Neil Johnson had to be content with eighth in class in their 1071 Morris Mini Cooper S.

The pair were going well until a wrong test and broken fuel pump lead cost them any chance of a top five placing.

A total of 45 cars and crews from England and Scotland contested the event, which contained special tests at the Penrith Truckstop, Lowther Park and Greystoke forest. Overall victory went to the MG Midget of Archie and Richard Simmonds.
