JOHN Coleman has admitted that finances were the reason behind Mark Hughes’ decision to yesterday snub Accrington Stanley and sign for Walsall.
The former Everton and Northampton central defender had linked up with Stanley’s training camp in Colchester at the start of the week and was expected to give the Reds a response to their contract offer tomorrow.
But it was announced yesterday that Hughes, who captained Northampton last season and would have been a coup for Stanley, had instead joined League One Walsall - due to travel to the Crown Ground for a Carling Cup first round tie on August 11.
“They were able to offer him a better deal, so that’s life,” said Coleman.
“He was originally supposed to sign for Crewe anyway.”
