Olsson sets his sights on regular Blackburn Rovers spot

First published in Sport Lancashire Telegraph: Photograph of the Author by , Sports reporter

MARTIN Olsson says he will go into next week’s UEFA Under 21 Championships feeling ready for another stint of first-team football with Blackburn Rovers next season.

The Swedish left-back will be Rovers’ only representative at the under 21 tournament after Matt Derbyshire, who was expected to represent England, pulled out because of injury.

Olsson is determined to help his country to glory - particularly as the championships are taking place in his homeland - with Sweden’s first group match against Belarus now just eight days away.

And the 21-year-old also has his sights set on forcing his way back into the Rovers first team next season after a lengthy spell in the side during Paul Ince’s reign,.

But he appreciates that he faces experienced competition in Stephen Warnock and Gael Givet - if the Frenchman makes his loan deal permanent as expected.

“Of course, every week I want to play," Olsson said.

“If I don’t play, I won’t be upset but I’m just going to do my best and we’ll see. Of course I’m always ready.

“Warnock has been playing well and Givet has been doing well as well. When my chance comes I FROM BACK PAGE have to take it.

“I’m still young but hopefully next season I will be ready for it.”

The former Hogaborgs junior, who moved to Ewood Park three years ago, enjoyed a season that saw him make 15 first-team appearances and score in the Carling Cup against Everton.

He came on as a late substitute for the retiring Tugay in the final match of the season against West Bromwich Albion but has not started a league game since his sending off for two bookings at Tottenham in November – a month before Sam Allardyce replaced Ince at the helm.

Olsson, whose mother hails from Kenya and whose twin brother Marcus plays for Swedish side Halmstads, had been hoping to get a start once Rovers’ safety had been secured but is prepared to take a patient approach at Ewood.

“It has been hard this year,” he said.

“I scored but it has been hard as well, playing against the big four - teams like Liverpool.

“But I’ve played a few games now and it’s always good to play against the big four because that’s where you learn more things.

“I’m grateful for getting these chances already to play in a few games against big teams.

“I didn’t even know that I would play this season, so I feel good that they gave me the chance.

“I’ve got Warnock and Gael in front of me but I’m still young. I’m not stressing that I have to play.

“Even if I’m in the stands, I always look at what Warny or Gael does and learn from them.

“International wise, first of all it is the Under 21s at the European Championships and then of course I want to reach Sweden’s first team.

“But I won’t stress about that either.”

ST's went on sale at Dingles today and by lunch they shut the ticket office because the Amstrad PC could not cope. Then the online system crashed so the message was if your a Burnley fan and want a ticket - don't go to the ticket office and don't go online!

Meanwhile did you notice when they got promoted to the championship ITV digital went bust and now they are in the premiership Setanta are reported to be going bust - I think its the Dingles fault!

Meanwhile yet another of Floods shopping centers has gone into administration according to report in LET so no wonder the wage cap is set at £15m - bring em on!

Hi B+B - We are just trimming a bit of access squad fat so that BS can concentrate the funds on quality. We have carried too many for a few years now and it does not work - just look at Newcastle - 60 odd players was it!

Blackburn Rovers chairman John Williams says the club will make significant cuts to wages in time for next season.

Williams told BBC Radio Lancashire: "A number of players are leaving and are not essential to replace, so that will go a long way to doing it.

"We've not got a bottomless pot of money and I think numbers will have to be reduced.

"We budgeted for a wage rise this year but that wasn't enough when you change manager and buy players in January."

He continued: "The total extent of the wage bill was higher than we thought and coupled with the lower league position it was difficult for us financially".

Following the arrival of South African midfielder Elrio van Heerden and the imminent signing of French defender Gael Givet, Williams has warned Blackburn supporters not to expect a summer filled with new signings.

"Sam (Allardyce) understands the financial position and a lot depends on whether Roque (Santa Cruz) goes.

"We have already spent a substantial amount of money going forward by converting the option we negotiated with Gael Givet."

What i witnessed at the Turf today having been queing since 6am till 5.30pm for a season ticket for a friend was something from a third world country:

1,Only four tills in operation

2, no more than 3 casual Q8 stewards in sight who had no idea as to what was going on.

3,No toilet facilities,drinks or food,

4, Que jumping

5,People sent into Bob Lord stand to collect raffle tickets then forms and then envelopes,

6,No pens provided to fill out these forms.

7,No communication or official statement to people who had stood in ques all day.

I could go on and on

The sooner we get relegated the better,i for one will miss the Championship.

No smoke without fire.
And as for cutting wages, how do you justify loaning a goalscorer to a Greek side who helps them clinch the double and brings in a winger who is paid 6 times Derbyshires wage??? im puzzled by it all

"6 times Derbyshires wage"...are you sure??
To be fair, Realist, I think Rovers were very much working on a short term plan back in January. The mission was to stay up, and finances were adjusted accordingly. The wage bill at the time would have been offset against the value of staying up. Diouf will have a release clause, for if we were relegated. Ref the Sunderland thing, it wouldn't surprise me if he asked about it, because it is one of the few good jobs that he has a chance of getting, in the same way that Bruce left Wigan for it. I think the 'frustrated with the lack of funds' thing is just nonsense though, it suits Sunderland to say stuff like that, particularly as Newcastle are their enemy. Sam knows the situation at Ewood very well, and nothing has changed in terms of finances since he came...except of course, we are a hell of a lot better off, cos he kept us up!!!

31st YEAR AND COUNTING!
Yet another example of your ability to hand it out but your unable to take it.Don't suppose Rovers have ever had a problem at your ticket office. You must be unique.Good reference to the topic Morst, NOT.

An article in the Sunday Times last weekend stated that SA had enquired about the Sunderland Job and had his agent working around the clock to try and push something through. A Sunderland insider said that Allardyce was keen on making something happen and that he was frustrated with the lack of funds and resorces at BRFC. No smoke without fire. And as for cutting wages, how do you justify loaning a goalscorer to a Greek side who helps them clinch the double and brings in a winger who is paid 6 times Derbyshires wage??? im puzzled by it all
