CLARETS goalscorer Steven Thompson is adamant that no-one can take his first Burnley strike away from him.

Disputes continued long after the final whistle of Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Charlton Athletic on Saturday, after Addicks substitute Svetoslav Todorov had cancelled out Thompson’s early opener from Joey Gudjonsson’s initial strike.

Video replays proved Thompson got the decisive touch, but that didn’t stop Iceland midfielder Gudjonsson trying to claim his third of the season.

“I think it’s hit me and a defender, but I’ll take any goal that’s coming at the minute, believe me,” said Thompson, who joined the Clarets from Championship rivals Cardiff City on transfer deadline day.

“Since I came down to the Championship with Cardiff it (scoring) has possibly never been the highlight of my game.

“But as long as I’m in the team and the team’s playing well, the manager’s happy with my contribution and my team-mates certainly are as well ... obviously I’d love to be scoring more, and it’s something that I do work on and hopefully I will get in amongst the goals.

“But just at the minute we’re doing really well and scoring and I’m part of that so I’m relatively pleased.”

But Thompson reiterated the team’s frustrations that Martin Paterson had a goal chalked off before he broke the deadlock on 13 minutes, and questioned referee Rob Shoebridge’s judgement for changing his mind.

“I’ve never seen a referee give a goal and then take it away,” he said.

“If you send a player off are you going to tell him to come back out of the tunnel when you change your mind? I don’t think you’re going to.”
